Around SBN: Bob Sapp Denies Throwing Fights

Who draws the calls

As a followup to last week's piece about which players are drawing penalties more frequently than others, I've posted a publicly available Google Spreadsheet which shows updated numbers through Sunday night.  I'll try and refresh the spreadsheet each Monday morning throughout the season, for your viewing and downloading pleasure.  If you're using Excel or OpenOffice, you can easily Export this document into your favorite format for your own use (such as totalling by team, or whatever you like).  As with the Super Schedule, if you have anything you'd like to see added to this spreadsheet, or have other suggestions for information which you'd like to see posted, drop a note in the comments and I'll see what I can do.  When I've got some time I'll also update the template here to provide a quick & easy bookmark to this information, as well as some other stuff that I may post as well.

The leaders through the October 21 games are as follows...

Team No. Player Pen. Drawn
L.A 13 CAMMALLERI 11
S.J 19 THORNTON 10
L.A 11 KOPITAR 10

NYR 19 GOMEZ 8
DET 13 DATSYUK 8
PIT 12 MALONE 7

CHI 88 KANE 6
CGY 12 IGINLA 6

That sure looks like an All-Star cast of characters drawing calls from the referees, doesn't it?

I think it might be more instructive to convert this stat into some sort of rate - I mean, guys who play more each game are bound to draw more penalties. It's be nice to see who draws the most penalties as a function of their play rather than a function of their icetime.

Also - you think the Preds will snap out of their funk soon?

I'd agree that indexing this against playing time would provide another degree of refinement, but it's not like the leaders on this list are going to have twice the ice time of guys further down.

Perhaps what I can add in future iterations are columns for Games Played and Average TOI. That way people can perform those calculations as they see fit.

I think the Preds are working their way out of the funk. In the last two losses, they've played far better than they did the week before. Certainly getting Shea Weber back in a couple more weeks will make a huge difference. Tonight's game against L.A. is an important barometer for where they stand (preview coming soon).

Sounds good. Thanks!

Nice summary. Might be nice to have the raw data with who is taking the penalty as well (actually a cross tab of team vs team might be intresting not the raw data although I wouldn't mind). Might try period and zone too. I'd like to dig around for some patterns later in the year when the data has "calmed".

I'd love to see not only a TOI and games played number, but also a positional listing. I was most curious to see which goalies draw the most penalties for instance...from a glance it looks like Legace is tops, but hard to tell. I'd also just be curious to know what the numbers really look look like for D-men drawing penalties vs forwards, etc. At the very lease skaters vs goalies.

I'd also love to see offensive vs. defensive zone, and with or without the puck, but i don't think the NHL is providing those stats to begin with.

I should be able to pull in the zone, Paul, but not whether or not the player had the puck. Check back next Monday and I'll see how many of these I can roll in...
