Hockey Nerd Alert!

I'll be interested to see your review of the uh...review. It's getting a lot of thumbs down over at my place. My glance was only cursory and my stats chops are, at best, rudimentary...so another, more math conversant perspective like yours would be appreciated.

I've got a few questions I'm going to fire his way before responding here, as I think there may be a few examples of either incorrect verbage or the wrong tables inserted.

For example, his table on page 6, "Marginal Goals Per Point" shows Nashville as being a relatively unlucky team in the shootout, but his discussion in the text points them out as the 5th-luckiest team in that regard.

Like any statistical study the assumptions and caveats need to be understood (those criticisms about quality of opposition are a good point), but I always find this report an interesting read...

I haven't read the full review yet, but the Player Contribution tables are fascinating - and certainly at first glance in relation to those teams I am very close to, they seem to give a much more accurate measure of the "value" of a player to the team than standard stats such as G&A and +/-

I hope I have a slow day at work tomorrow so I can look into it further - the beauty of these stats is that they even look like work should my boss walk past :D
