Andrew Ebbett claimed off waivers by Chicago
The Anaheim Ducks waived center Andrew Ebbett yesterday, and this morning he's been claimed by the Chicago Blackhawks.
In 48 games last season, Ebbett notched 8 goals and 24 assists (a points-per-game rate higher than that of David Legwand and Martin Erat). Since the waiver process works in the reverse order of NHL standings, that means that every team below Chicago in the standings passed on Ebbett, including Nashville.
Is this another example of an offensively gifted player being passed up by the Preds (like Miro Satan at last season's trade deadline)? Or was it the right move to let him go by?

Honestly...
No, I admit I was very intrigued by the possibility yesterday and did my research on him. Ebbett is a player that has always seemed to catch my attention when he’s been in the Ducks lineup and usually in a good way, however while he has offensive skill and a lot of speed he is very undersized and questionable defensively. Ebbett excels in a top-six role and gets lost when shuffled down the lineup.
Had this transaction occurred a few days earlier, I might have bitten, but with the recall of Cal O’Reilly putting him in the Nashville lineup and the demotion of Ben Guite to Milwaukee due to center depth, I really don’t think we could afford to take on Ebbett at this time.
Ebbett simply isn’t a guy jumping up and down yelling “instant offense” and with the current struggles and current depth at center I don’t think adding someone new from outside the organization would’ve necessarily been the right move unless that player would command instant respect in the locker room.
Cal O’Reilly has put up similar numbers, is of similar stature, and has similar strengths. He is homegrown and put up solid numbers in his 11 games late last year when paired with top-six talent. I’d rather give him a shot at being part of the solution, rather than sending him back to Milwaukee (wouldn’t have to clear waivers yet – 30 day window) to bring in someone off waivers.

I definitely see the logic of giving the homegrown kid a shot, but I hope that they indeed give him a real shot; I don’t think Santorelli deserved to be sent down, for example. Sometimes it’s just a matter of can be moved, rather than who deserves it, however.
More fun than a stick to the face!

Santorelli
I disagree, I felt that Santorelli was losing his confidence and not clicking with any of his linemates at the time of his demotion. Like last season, he started strong, but faded away and really wasn’t making any impact at the time of his demotion.
I’m disappointed in a way to see him playing center at Milwaukee (1 goal, 4 assists in his first game last night), but if he can flourish there and continue to develop his game, maybe he could be a valuable call-up later this season and bump one of our centers to the wing if he feels more comfortable there…
