Friday's notes: Soaring with Sully

The Nashville Predators fan base is understandably giddy this morning over the team's 3-0 start, but perhaps even better reason for optimism is the hot start by Steve Sullivan, who now has 4 goals in 3 games (tied for the league lead), and almost had a hat trick at the end of the first period last night. Just having him back on the ice was once a pipe dream, but to see him leading the way is a special treat for Preds fans.

Follow after the jump for a deep look at exactly how Anders the Giant is doing so well, word of a serious injury to a major goal-scorer for Detroit, and some musing over exactly why Matthew Lombardi was scratched yesterday...

PK...in response to what you wrote about the Pk not getting it done yet...

I think we will have to get Rinne back before it will pick up. It goes with hockey cliche no. 83 “your goalie has to be your best penalty killer”, and having a goalie who gives bad rebounds off nearly every shot makes the PK that much more difficult.

Now and then

it’s refreshing to realize just how much about the game there is to learn. Justin’s Goalie Guild analysis of Anders Lindback provided just such a reminder. Thanks very much for the link.

Lombardi

Dirk, where are you standing on the Lombardi “injury”? It really seems odd. I’ve yet to see anybody say how or when he got hurt. The entire story screams BS, but on the other I can’t figure out why Trotz would be sitting him 3 games in. What could he have done wrong so soon?

Trotz said in the STL postgame

That he was hurt in front of the bench at some point in the Chicago game? I don’t know, he could be benched for not really producing on the ice?

by DonBorvio on Oct 15, 2010 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Given the NHL policy that allows them to keep quiet about such things, it’s hard to say. Trotz did mention something about him getting hit into the boards in Chicago, but Josh Cooper pointed to some comments that may indicate something different.

One of these things is not like the other:

Goals per game: 3.7 (5th)
Goals against: 2.0 (3rd)
Power Play pct: 30.8 (3rd)
Penalty Kill pct: 66.7 (28th)
