Pekka Rinne shuts down the Capitals as Preds close out preseason with 3-0 win
The Nashville Predators finished off their preseason schedule in style today, putting together a 3-0 win on the road against Alex Ovechkin and the high-flying Washington Capitals. Pekka Rinne turned aside 22 shots for the win, and Joel Ward scored twice (once shorthanded) for the Preds.

Celebrate the start of the regular season, and take advantage of a special offer to save big on Nashville Predators tickets.
Cal O'Reilly also made a big impact, opening the scoring in the second period as he centered a line with Steve Sullivan (who had two assists on the day) and Patric Hornqvist. You really couldn't ask for a better tune-up for the regular season, beating a Cup-contender on the road, shutting down the biggest offensive juggernaut in the league, and seeing your #1 goalie lock down the shutout.
The lineup we saw this afternoon is quite likely what will open the season Saturday night against Anaheim. Jonas Andersson, Sergei Kostitsyn, Jamie Lundmark, Wade Belak and Alexander Sulzer were scratched. The defense pairings were generally Suter/Weber, Bouillon/Klein, and Parent/Franson, while the forward lines were Erat-Lomardi-Wilson, Ward-Legwand-Dumont, Sullivan-O'Reilly-Hornqvist, and Smithson-Goc-Tootoo.

Franson continues to be guarded, but...
His Corsi does indicate he is productive when he’s out there…

No O'Reilly Option?
1G & 1A in only 10 minutes of ice time. I would vote for that. The guy finally had the game we’ve been waiting to see this preseason. I hope it wasn’t too late.
"Get to the Choppa!"
O'Reilly is safe...
He’s been centering the second line since the end of tge scrimmages in camp when the roster was cut down and lines began to be formed.
Cal O’Reilly is the second line center for the Nashville Predators…

I trust your opinion, but that kinda scares me. I’d prefer Goc at 2C and Smithson at 4C so their faceoff abilities aren’t wasted. Something like this:
Erat – Lombardi – Wilson
Sullivan – Goc – Hornqvist (a very effective line last year)
Ward – Legwand – Kostitsyn
Dumont – Smithson – Tootoo
Gotta give him a chance...
Cal has dynamic on-ice vision. He is an assist machine. He’s mastered the AHL level and now needs to get a shot to see if he can’t bring his offense to the NHL level.
I too have my doubts he’s the best option for the Nashville Predators, but I’ve said it for a couple years, if he went to another team I can see him having a Peverley like explosion.
Kid has talent. Till someone else beats him out of that spot…I say we give him a chance and see what he can do…

I definitely agree he has talent. Outside of Dumont, Wilson, and perhaps Suter; he’s got the best vision on the team. I sincerely hope he does well here, because goodness knows we need a second scoring center.
That said, he’s got to be reaching the end of his rope. This will be his third year with NHL playing time, so he’s got to make the most of it. Lotta guys light up the AHL – few can make it translate.

Definitely
There is no safety net for Cal anymore. He’s either gotta step up and prove he can get the job done or Goc will move up the lineup and Lundmark will be recalled to replace Goc’s spot in the lineup.
We’ve seen Cal have chemistry with Sullivan before. If they cam grow on that and get Hornqvist going as well, it could be a dangerous line. If not, then we gave him a good shot and it’ll be time to move on.
Only time will tell…

How long, do you think, until Trotz moves Wilson to center? I honestly think Willy is top NHL center material.
by Chris Burton on Oct 3, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Wilson
Colin will play the whole year at wing unless injuries force him to center. I think they’re trying to take it easy with him and allow him to build confidence in his offensive game on the wing before adding the defensive responsibilities of the center position.
If he was at center his minutes would be limited since he’d be centering the third line. This gives him a bigger role with less responsibilities growing up in the league…

Please
I sure hope so. I’m driving up from Chattanooga with a bunch of friends and I want to drink in celebration after the game, not sorrow. F@#k the Ducks! The Anaheim Sucks! That’s all I’ve come up with so far… Ducks suck ducks suck ducks suck! But that’s gonna be hard to chant when I’m hammered… ah well… I could always resort to “quack! quack! quack!”… I’d rather be an infuriatingly “almost made it to the second round” hockey team in a non-hockey market than a team that started as a Disney movie any day of the week.
great win today
Really shows that they’re headed into the season with the right mindset. The coaching staff, and to a lesser extent the leadership group, have the entire squad focused.
Impressive, too, that they shut out the league’s best offense. This is how we will be successful – score the dirty goals, get good goaltending, and limit mistakes.

Without their second best player and best center. Super impressive, yep.

What's impressive...
is your ability to muster such glorious snark over a mere preseason loss. Well done, sir. Looking forward to 10/16 when the trashtalk really counts. Bring it :)
