Thursday's notes: Honoring Veteran's Day

We here at OtF want to recognize the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces and their families to make possible our comfortable lives in the U.S. I'd like to draw your attention to a charity we've featured here before, Not Alone, which provides "provides programs and services for warriors and families impacted by combat stress and PTSD. " Please consider making a donation to Not Alone today, and help our veterans cope with the day-to-day struggles which can continue long after they come home from the battlefield.

In the meantime, follow after the jump for salutes to our military from around the hockey world, starting, of course, here in Nashville...

Should I be concerned that the lead question here is "Will the offensive potential of Marcel Goc, Jordin Tootoo and Sergei Kostitsyn live up to expectations?" Among those three guys the best career year belongs to Goc, with 30 points. No wonder the Preds are desperate for scoring right now.

Will the offensive potential of Marcel Goc, Jordin Tootoo

Uh, what? Since when has “offensive potential” and “Jordin Tootoo” ever been in the same sentence that didn’t have something to do with “lack thereof”? Jordin is a lot of things, and most of them good, but he’s not a scorer and never will be.

My hat's off to you Vets!

We ask so much of these men and women, they are the best of us. On this day I remember the grandfather I never met – he was a Doughboy in WWI, a member of Pershing’s Rifles. Second Marine AEF, a sniper in a tree – my father told me that he never wanted to talk about the war, all he would say about it was “war is hell.” 60% of his regiment was killed in the battle for Blanc Monte Ridge, during which he received his first Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for valor. He received his second Purple Heart at Beleau Wood. From what I’ve heard he was a fine man and a good American.

Make something idiot-proof and the world will build a better idiot
