PRED INJURY UPDATE: Suter, Erat, and Lombardi will not make the trip out West.

Willy Daunic via The Sports Zone's Facebook page. Feel free to panic. I would guess that Linus Klasen will get recalled to fill Erat's spot.

Commencing panic operations.

As long as Cube and Goc can play we are fine. Leaves Belak as the healthy scratch for PHX and LA. He probably dresses against the goons from ANA.

7 pts by the time they head to Toronto would be a great 11 days.

Awesome!!

We get to see more of our scoring machine Wade Belak!! Yaaaay!!

Tootoo back, Goc very close...

Both skated yesterday and participated in contact drills. Heading to practice in about 10 minutes, will be tweeting updates from there…

I’d assume Legwand slides into X, but he took a maintaence day yesterday…

The big question is if Goc is really ready to play tomorrow at Phoenix. If he isn’t, and they dress Belak instead because they didn’t call anyone up… yikes.

would probably move wilson back to center, and then not play him. Just like the last few games.

Has Erat not been at 100 % since he returned mid August from back spasms?

by XVIII on Nov 2, 2010 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

I knew Lombardi couldn’t go, but I was really hopeful for Suter. Erat’s been so bad it won’t matter.

I’m beginning to worry about Suter if he still hasn’t skated.

by Chris Burton on Nov 2, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

Ok

i’ll be the first to say it. Lets bring back Bonk!!! or better yet Devries, or maybe a great scoring leader like VK.!!!! LOL LOL.. i thought we all needed that right now!

by bluegrassbaby on Nov 2, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

So the real news is...

Suter isn’t making the trip.

If Klasen gets called back up and does nothing he’ll do as much as Erat.

Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

by Michaeltastic on Nov 2, 2010 1:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Exactly. We know Lombardi is going to be out until further notice, and Erat’s been essentially invisible anyway. But the way Josh (well, Trotz) sounded yesterday, Suter was going on the trip. Makes me wonder.

by Chris Burton on Nov 2, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying Suter isn't important

But we have had other d men that stepped up. Apparently Trotz doesn’t believe that Wilson has, so getting Goc back is more important in the short term than Suter?

by wrandsw on Nov 2, 2010 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt this has to do with Trotz making a choice of which position has been filled better by backups.

I really can’t stand the NHL’s injury policy, we basically just sit around and wait to be surprised by news like this.

I get what you are saying and completely agree that the lack of information on injuries is quite annoying. But I wasn’t clear. I just meant that because of how well Sulzer, Franson, and SOB have stepped up it allows the Preds to be extra cautious with Suter. Something they cannot do with Goc based on the lack of trust that Trotz seems to have with Wilson at the center position.

by wrandsw on Nov 2, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree 100%

I cannot stand their policy of not releasing players injuries. It keeps us as fans just hanging on the edge. Very frustrating!!

by ablairnash on Nov 2, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think that has anything to do with it. Goc can come back from a separated shoulder faster than Suter can from x.

I think the absence of Suter has done this team more harm than you realize.

by Chris Burton on Nov 2, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I fully realize BUT

I agree Suter’s injury has created problems in the short term, but it has also forced Trotz’ to play Franson, Sulzer, and SOB more than he would have had Suter been healthy. In the long term having those 3 play more significant minutes helps this team. Just like Peks getting hurt provided an opportunity for Lindback or Goc’s injury provided an opportunity to get Spaling back up.

What if we are 10-11 version of the 09-10 Dead Wings that got healthy at the end of the year? Tread water until Suter gets healthy, Erat gets hot, and Wilson figures out a way to remember his room number without texting Spaling.

BTW glad to see a coach have the fortitude to bench ArNOTt. I’d be willing to bet my free frostie that he was giving a half ^*~ effort.

by wrandsw on Nov 2, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Suter's absence

I agree also. Suter has a big role on our team. And honestly I would rather see Sulzer stay up and Klein get the boot. I was hoping that he would improve from last year. It seems like almost everytime the other team scores, he is on the ice missing an assignment . He just kills me! What the heck do they see in him?

I am guessing that Goc will return tonight. Phoenix is going to be a tough team. They can produce some offense and have nowhere to go but up. Wolski and Vrbata have something to prove and they have some players coming back off of injury.

My question is this: What is going on with Lombardi exactly? I know the whole routine of a concussion, but what is the deal? What would it take for him to come back? He is the player that I was most excited about seeing play in Nashville this season. He has alot of upside when he is on the ice and Nashville could really use him. Will we see him at all this year?

The Preds need to come away with a win tonight or the news tomorrow will be that we are spiraling down. Lets go PREDS! Knock this roadtrip out with some W’s! Our D needs to step up and we need to score some goals. I wish that O’reilly would shoot the puck a little more!

by SinBinPred on Nov 3, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Seth…why go away from Toots with Legwand and Ward?

The fact that Erat isn’t making the trip just adds another argument to my case for the stupidity of sending Klasen down yesterday. Are we that financially strapped that we can’t keep Klasen up to practice with the team yesterday and today? It would have been real easy for Klasen to either board the team plane to PHX today or hop on a flight to Milwaukee. The Ads don’t play until tomorrow night either, so he didn’t miss any AHL games.

Just seems like the whole situation was handled terribly, and the strangest part is that Poile is a slow methodical GM. Yet this time he made a reactionary move instead of a typical thoughtful move we are use to.

by wrandsw on Nov 2, 2010 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

I'd guess Trotz was happy with...

What he saw from the combo of 33-11-29 at Detroit on Saturday.

As for Klasen, I agree with the concensus in Milwaukee that he was the wrong player to recall for Saturday’s game due to the situation, but at the same time I think the organization was in a bad spot if they didn’t recall him since the need was for a forward and Klasen had just been named AHL player of the week and was leading the league in goals at the time.

Sending him back had nothing to do with finances either. Goc and Tootoo are back and ready to play which forces Klasen out of the lineup. Milwaukee and Nashville both play Wednesday and Klasen will get an opportunity to log big minutes for the Ads, which in the long run is better for his development than sitting in the press box at Phoenix would be. I also think that practice has been pretty uptempo the past two days with the focus being on breaking some bad habits and get back to playing Predators hockey for a full 60 minutes. The situation just wasn’t right to try to be bringing someone up to speed if they weren’t ultimately going to be in the lineup for the next game.

Thanks for the insight Seth. All three of you do great work.

I guess ultimately while I think Trotz is the perfect coach for this organization, some of the ways he handles players frustrates me. I follow the Flyers as well and I watched as Lavy threw Wellwood right in the fire last night. No he didn’t replace Briere but he did log pretty big minutes. While Trotz refuses to give Klasen a chance. Guys like Wilson and Klasen are offensive forwards wouldn’t it make sense if you are down by 2 goals after both the 1st and the 2nd period to get offensive guys extra minutes. I appreciate what Smithson and Spaling bring to the team, but they have 2 pts between them in 16 games. Why would they have more EV TOI than Wilson and Klasen in a game that you are playing catchup from the 2nd period on? Takes me back to my OT theory. A win is a win and a loss is a loss who cares what the final score is? Putting the scorers on the ice trying to tie it up or win it.

by wrandsw on Nov 2, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Seth

I am glad they called the young guy up. I wish we would give those guys more of a chance. Look at Edmonton this year. They are letting those young guys get some experience in the bigs and their team is going to payoff for it Offensively in the future. Klasen needs to get playing time in, but we have injuries. Pop him in the lineup for a couple of games with some top guys and see what he can do. When we called him up, he had only a small amount of playing time, along with butterflies from being in the NHL. Give him a chance and see what happens. What do we have to lose? Who else are you gonna play? Belak?

by SinBinPred on Nov 3, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

While this isn't a "good" thing...

it may have some benefits.

If a team, especially a fairly young team, were to go through a whole season without getting bitten by the injury bug, that would seem great. The team would do well, the coach would find the best line combinations, and life would be good.

However, imagine if the same team then experienced some injuries at (but not until) playoff time came rolling around.

Long story short: it wouldn’t be pretty. Players wouldn’t have faced much adversity, at least of this particular sort, and probably wouldn’t respond well. If the same team had (also) suffered injuries earlier in the year, they would probably respond better. A little adversity early can harden the team, and get everyone pulling 110%.

I look at an injury in a similar light as a penalty: although there is no getting around the fact that ultimately it is a negative thing, it can be turned to your advantage. A well-killed penalty can change the momentum of a game, and if a team can come together and survive while a star player is injured, it can seem like they’re firing at more than 100% when he gets back.

Bottom line, as I see it: Preds’ injuries are no reason to be happy, but no reason to panic, either.

by Smashvillain on Nov 2, 2010 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed, injuries are part of the game and every team must deal with them. It’s how injuries are dealt with that makes a difference in the standings. And I don’t mean just the players. Coaches also. On Saturday in Detroit we all got a lesson in how not to deal with injuries, how not to play from behind, and how not to manage your available personnel. Phoenix and Anaheim are winnable games on this trip. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.

That is a good wway of looking at it. Way to stay positive. Lombardi and Suits back sure would be nice though.
