yikes! can we just go back to the jay-z intro? that was the best one they’ve ever had. the current one is embarrassing.

Yes please!
I was blown away by that one on opening night. The one they played Saturday was almost as bad as the 2 they had last year.

“Run this Town”, with Kanye and Rihanna, I think.

Lame. Bring back the first one from this year.

Wow...
I just pulled this up on my phone since it was blocked at work and I just hope they don’t use this in the arena very often.

Why?
It seems like we keep the crummy viedeos for a whole year, yet axe the best ones we make after 1/4th of the season… I don’t like this news.
Well, it isn’t “Run This Town” or “All We Do Is Win,” two inspired choices this season.

Yes, Country Music is popular in Nashville
But I’m pretty sure that there’s more than that in the city. I’m sure there are also Country artists that would love a chance to a song for the Preds that don’t sound like CMT Top 10 stereotypes.
And they are seriously playing this as part of the intro video? Hideous.
Yeah, It's too bad
this completely tired formula was used. I didn’t listen to the whole tune so I should reserve judgment but I feel certain that the line “boot up your a**!” is in there somewhere.
Why not get Del McCoury Band or another of the esteemed bluegrass artists in our area to put a slammin’ tune together?
Ooh... that would be cool.
Heck, Dierks Bentley just did some stuff with them, and he’s a hockey player, too. Get him on the job…

Dierks is the best idea – and furthermore, he’s at the games often. Saw him in the basement the other day talking to Tootoo, I have to think he’d be open to recording something new.
by Chris Burton on Dec 14, 2010 4:17 PM EST up reply actions
Great idea. I didn't think of Dierks.
Saw him in line at will-call once. He was trying to not be noticed, but said “How you doin’?” when I said hi.
What I don't understand
Separate from the issue of this song, why is it that so many Predators fans react instinctively against any country music associated with the team? Personally, I’m allergic to country, but it only makes sense to tap into what is probably the most famous aspect of the city. It’s like many folks expect the team to consciously avoid playing country music no matter what.
And for those who think country music has nothing to do with hockey, the western half of Canada disagrees.

I disagree, somewhat
The fans that I’ve spoken to regarding country music in the arena aren’t opposed to the genre at all, because it reps the city and a genre of music that was made famous here; they have a problem with the quality of said songs.
“I Like it, I Love it” is fine with me because a) its distinctive, and b) Tim McGraw is actually a reputable artist, unlike Mr. Copeland here. I don’t like crappy music, regardless of the genre, and to be quite blunt, this song is crappy.
In summary – I’m fine with the country music, as long as it doesn’t sound like its coming from a B-movie.

I think it boils down to not liking the stereotype. Outside of the city, people seem to just assume that if you live in Nashville, you must like country music, and that’s just not the case. If they were selling the Predators to tourists, the focus on country music makes sense. Not so much since it’s for the locals.

Sometimes it's obvious you're a transplant...
To a lot of Nashvillians, the arrival of professional sports franchises was exciting not just because we were going to have live pro sports in the city, but because it was a validation of the city—that it was more than country music and Opryland. Blasting horrible country music at Preds games just plays back into the stereotype of the city that so many of us are constantly up against. The same stereotype we hoped organizations like the Predators and Titans would help fight.
It’s also doubly frustrating because there’s so many great local musicians and bands in this city whose works would be much more appropriate than another generic county artist.
by sbnationscreenname on Dec 14, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions
As a fellow transplant, I agree with you wholeheartedly
I think because some of us relocated here from other parts of the country with an understandably built-in aversion to the ‘Hee-Haw’ stereotype, we continually wish to dispel that and prove to people on the outside that that’s not what Nashville is all about anymore, and really never was. It sure doesn’t help when people who apparently don’t realize how the rest of the country sees Nashville unwittingly keep reinforcing the stereotype.
If you missed it, I wrote about this yesterday.

I love country music...
…but I think that it’s time for something new. There’s so much talent here that I can’t imagine we couldn’t get someone to come up with something new. Brad Paisley would be awesome. Something different from McGraw would be fine, too. Lady A. Keith Urban. I’m not a fan of the new song (above).
NOT a fan of rap. I agree that it’s cool for the song used by the Preds to be country music. This is Music City, after all. If we had something that wasn’t country, I have to admit that the Blackhawks’ thing is the best thing out there. Wonder whether there’s anything similar…
If we're going to talk about other teams' themes...
This has to be mentioned:

Does anyone know if the ‘Canes still use it? It’s classic.
Don't remember hearing it
When the Slapshot Radio group did the roadie in Raleigh, but I agree, that’s some classic fare right there… :)

Terrible
Country music and hockey go together as well as dirt and mayonnaise.

Disagreed.
Because it’s something unique about Nashville. Lots of the players are country music fans, too.
Disagree. We have a unique hockey market and I’m quite proud of it. There’s no reason to hide from the fact.

Let us not forget...
about a man named Stompin’ Tom Connors
If we use this song as an intro video ours will possibly be worse than Atlanta’s. I dont mean to hate on them b/c I like the Thrashers well enough but I thought this was terrible.

I listened to the whole song...
I didn’t want to rush to judgment based on the snippet above.
It sucks. Well, musically, it’s fine, but I’ve never liked songs where the lyrics felt contrived and simplistic. It just sounds sort of like, I don’t know…grade 8 kind of stuff.
“The Preds are gonna knock you down” “Touch the puck, you’re out of luck…”
Really? That’s the best you could do?
It just seems that they could have gotten a more globally recognized artist. I’ll be honest, I had never heard of this musician until today…when I heard Smashville. I went to Amazon and previewed some of his other stuff. Yeah, this guy is no lyrical genius.
I don’t mind country music, but lyrics are important. Copeland’s song just further enforces a certain stereotype.
I just became a Red Wings fan
Hokey, cornball, crap. I hate country music but I have no problem with the Predators being associated with it because it makes sense. But this song is embarrassing no matter the genre.
Lord have mercy!
If we play this CRAP… we will LOSE!!! Stop trying to country up this team marketing people!!! I hated “My Town” I hated “I am a Predator!!!” I hated the way they turned that Van Halen song into “Radulov…Radu-lo-ov”. Stop making team themed music and just do what every other team does; use popular hits!
This is it....
Just use good, existing music. Custom-written songs are universally clumsy and generally bad.
Ok I admit it...
I may be the only one on this board that will admit they like it. Yes it’s a little hokey/cheesy, but isn’t that kind of Music City’s M.O.? We are the rhinestone capital of the world are we not? I know most are concerned about what other hockey fan bases will think…screw ‘em. I’m proud of the quirkyness of Nashville hockey and of this fanbase, honestly that’s what makes it so much more fun to be a fan of this team.
Do I think we need to make this our theme-song?? No, far from it. Musicality meh, not so great, but as an ode to Music City hockey by a self-professed hockey fanatic, I think it’s awesome.
Next time you’re at the Bridge, if you here this as someone’s ringtone, say Hi!…you’ll know it’s me.
by TitanPredBearFan on Dec 14, 2010 6:16 PM EST reply actions
BINGO!
Get someone who actually knows how to turn a phrase. And if you want fiddle solos, there’s nobody better.
Personally I can’t help but think using Copeland was perhaps a cost-cutting measure as well. Don’t forget theses guys also get ASCAP/BMI royalties when we use their songs in any way, shape, or form. I’m sure Jay-Z didn’t come cheap.
by ajinnashville on Dec 15, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions
My Stand
Ryan Suter is a country music fan—even fussed at Smithers for his locker room song selection which was light on the genre. I am a Ryan Suter fan. So some country in the Bridge is fine with me if it’s fine with him.

I like that the team has songs that are theirs, that are adapted or written for them. But this isn’t inspirational like “Run this Town” is. This isn’t going to get me geared up to cheer for sixty minutes. I’m okay with it as a cool song to play during the game. But the opening video needs to have some force behind it.
Hey guys lets take it easy on the song
This guy probably worked hard to put this together and yall are all on here just destroying it. It may not be the best song but it has to be better than Pekka’s macarena song. He may be reading the posts. Let’s try to have some class here.
Lame.
Not a fan of country, but I know it’s a part of Nashville so whatever. However, an intro is supposed to be badass, energetic, and get everyone pumped up for a tough game of Preds hockey. Country just does not fill that need. I can think of Classical songs that have more power behind them than this awful song
"It's not so much that this show is bad, as it's hurting America...."
Let’s be clear, there’s no indication that this “Smashville” song is the new intro. I think people are confusing two separate issues.
On the Forecheck is SB Nation's blog covering the Preds (be sure to check out my discount offer on Nashville Predators tickets). Catch me on Twitter at @Forechecker, or join our legions on Facebook at Facebook.com/OnTheForecheck.
Well that's a bit better.
Hope that is the case then. The Georgetown basketball team came out to Run This Town last year, and it was always very cool and got you ready for the game. I still really really don’t like this song though haha. Maybe it’ll just be during a timeout that gets cut short or something, and that’ll be enough for the backlash to be felt
"It's not so much that this show is bad, as it's hurting America...."
They really should clear it with the fans before they play crap like this.
We are Music City U.S.A.! Music!! Not Country Music City U.S.A.!!! There are so many different types of musics that come out of here. Why not branch out when associating the team with music. Better yet, don’t make anymore Nashville Predators songs! The only song I like that’s linked to the team (and should never be replaced, btw) is “I Like It I love It”.
I like country and all...
But I’m not feeling this song at all. People already think of Nashville as a bunch of rednecks, and this does not help our cause. I hope the team will reconsider, and this is coming from an avid country music fan. I agree with several of the above comments…get Dierks!
I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
I’m gonna start off by saying that I’m a musician, and have been accused of being a “music snob”, but…
This song sounds like my 14 year old little brother wrote the lyrics drunk on Jack Daniels and some uber-slick producer went to a game and called his sleazy recording studio and said, “14,000+ people?!? I need to profit on this IMMEDIATELY! Get me the rights to a Predators-themed song right now! What? We don’t have one? Get your 14 year old brother drunk and have him write something, I’ll get one of the poor suckers who owe me a favor to record it! Mwahaha, if even 10% of these people buy this song from my website for $1, I’ll make a quick $1400. Mwahahaha!”
I just feel like this song represents everything that is wrong with the music industry today.
Okay, sorry. Rant over.
There's only two kinds of teams in the NHL: Predators and prey.
No, no, no.no..........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Let me preface by saying I’m born and raised here and hate country music. It has it’s place and I get that. This is putrid. Please save the whole fan base the embarrassment and shame.
by crosscheck charlie on Dec 15, 2010 8:42 AM EST reply actions
Something different
Metal / Rock music seems to work better for hockey, so why not use the amazing bands from Tennessee to make some of the songs. Paramore, Kings of Leon, multiple underground hardcore/metal band, or even the White Stripes. Any of them could make a song more suitable to hockey rather than the ol’ boring country retread.
Hillbilly Casino
They should get Hillbilly Casino to do the song. These guys are great and full of energy, if you haven’t seen them at Layla’s on a Friday night do yourself a favor and check them out. Plus they play real country songs, not whatever this is trying to be. (For the record, I am a country music purest haha)
