Pekka Rinne talks about ending a losing streak, and the "Save, Pekka Rinne!" song

More good stuff comes from the Thom Abraham Show this afternoon as he interviewed Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne, who beat Atlanta Saturday night to end a 5-game losing streak for the Preds.

Thom does a great job of getting Peks to loosen up a bit in the interview, as we hear about what he'll be doing during the Olympic break, whether the NHL should continue to participate in the Olympics, and also drops news that he'll get the start tomorrow night against Phoenix, thanks in part to a new addition the Ellis household (congrats to Dan & his wife Katie!).

RADIO UPDATE: There's also encouraging news from 104.5's new 12-3 weekday show, 3 Hour Lunch. They had an entertaining segment with Jordin Tootoo earlier today, and I get the impression that while they're football guys at heart, they do plan on giving hockey its due. Thanks to Brent & the gang for mentioning this site on their show today.

need those new guys

To keep it up. Have Pete, Terry, and Tom come on every once in a while. This is the only professional team still playing in the area, and should be treated as such…

Good listening

Thom is a solid part of the local sports scene.

I tuned in the Zone briefly over the noon hour and listened to part of the Vince Young quarterback-sneak discussion, then moved on. I’ll pay a lot more attention if people like Toots are going to be part of it.

Thanks for the heads-up.

other good news from the "lack of hockey coverage" front

I emailed Ian Rhodes over at WSMV to complain about the “NHL Game Of The Week” being preempted by Pat Robertson yesterday. He was the only “sports” guy with an email address on their web site. Even though there is no hockey on his blog I appealed to him for answers. To my surprise I got this response today:

First off I want to apologize for our station not showing the game.
I have no idea why that decision was made. I also agree as
someone who recently moved from Michigan that I wish they covered hockey
better in this city. That being said I am not a Red Wings fan. I like
the Predators but to be completely honest I am still learning about
them. I have watch plenty of games this season but don’t want to write
about something and then sound like an idiot. Give me some time I’m
learning. I used to live in Nashville a couple of years ago and that’s
when I became a Preds fan, back with Karyia, Hammus, Vokoun, Mason. I
still love watching Sully and Tootoo, Suter. But like I said I’m
learning and when I do you’ll be sure to hear from me about the Preds. I
appreciate the input and if I get an answer I’ll make sure you hear it.

It’s great that people are responding when we start complaining!

I didn’t hear the interview with Tootoo, but accounts from people who did seem to indicate that it was an embarrassing and borderline offensive interview with questions like whether or not Tootoo was offended by the term Eskimo or whether he would try to date Taylor Swift now. Personally, that’s not the type of hockey interview I’m interested in.

As for WSMV, the word I got was that they had signed a contract with the 700 Club in advance of NBC releasing its NHL schedule. That’s still inexcusable to me because they knew that the NHL would be scheduled, they just didn’t know which games would be on. They made that decision and now they’re trying to dance around the angry emails and phone calls from Middle Tennessee hockey fans.

I didn’t think the Tootoo interview was bad – actually, the eskimo bit was good, it allowed Toots the airtime to explain that the proper term is “Inuk”. It wasn’t offensive, they were asking honest questions (I doubt very many people outside of hardcore Tootoo fans knew that around here previously).

More fun than a stick to the face!

My problem with the Toots interview on 104.5 was not the eskimo question. I didn’t think it was posed very well, but Toots had an excellent response. There was just a lack of prep and they kept wanting to relate everything to football (should not be surprised by that, I guess). I do like the interviews that focus on the more personal aspects, rather than just on the ice stuff, but they went about it the wrong way. That being said, I do hope they continue to bring players on and talk at least a little hockey…..
