Olympic Hockey should be played on Olympic Hockey Rinks!
What's with this year's olympic hockey games being played on small NHL sized rinks!
Real "Olympic Hockey" should be played on real "Olympic" Hockey Rinks!... What do you say Olympic Hockey fans!
The next time the Olympic Committee is evaluating cities for future winter olympics, they should immediately eliminate any city that just can't provide Olympic sized hockey rinks, period!
C'mon , whats next, having the Super G ski competition on a bunnyhill!

The reason
they are playing on NHL sized rinks this year, according to the IOC, is that more than half the players in the tournament play on NHL sized rinks on their club teams.
If I hit a hole-in-one on this grand slam the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.
It just makes sense with so many NHL players in the Olympics. Also, they would’ve had to build some new rinks in Vancouver when they already have plenty of ice surfaces up there. So, it’s an infrastructure thing, as well.

What I’d like to see is for the NHL to allow new rinks to be made anywhere between the existing NHL standard and the international one, returning us to the old days where different rinks had markedly different characteristics (like baseball does).
It’ll probably never happen, but I’d dig it.
More fun than a stick to the face!
On the Forecheck is SB Nation's blog covering the Nashville Predators.
Agreed!
It’d be a lot of fun to see the differences it makes. And the strategy when teams go to build new arenas vs players they sign.
But as you said, it’ll likely NEVER happen. For one thing, having the larger surface means either a larger building or fewer seats. This is the opposite of the trend is right now, packing as many seats in as small a space as possible. With the obvious exception of luxury suites.

I do, however, agree with the original post. One thing I enjoy about Olympic hockey usually is the effect of the larger ice surface. I certainly understand the decision based on available rinks in Vancouver. I do NOT, however, think the number of NHL players should influence this. Think about Olympic basketball. They have different foul lines/paint than the NBA, yet most the players are from the NBA. Same thing here.
One note though, would the US team not be at a severe disadvantage on the larger ice? Being built on work ethic and grit, the smaller surface is more their game.
