Thursday's news: Central division drama as Columbus fires Ken Hitchcock

Yesterday a second Central Division coach was fired this season as Ken Hitchcock was cut loose in Columbus, after St. Louis fired Andy Murray last month.

After the jump we've got analysis of the Blue Jackets situation, excitement over the fact that brothers Cal and Ryan O'Reilly get to play against other tonight when the Avalanche visit the Predators, and a call by one Nashville blogger for David Poile to jump into the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes...

yeah

When I step back and take a look at the situation, there’s no way you could convince me we should get Kovalchuk. Sorry.

So why...

…is Patric Hornqvist only averaging 15:00 of TOI if he’s the team’s leading goal-scorer? I’d like an answer to THAT question → could go hand-in-hand with “Why isn’t Franson,” broken ribs aside, “getting premium PP minutes?”

Franson had been getting 1st unit PP time prior to injury

About three games before his injury, Franson and Sullivan were switched to the first power-play unit with Weber and Suter manning the second…

I’d have to go back and see why (don’t recall off the top of my head), but there were about 3 weeks in late November/early December where he only played about 9.5 minutes a game, which brings his average down a bit. In 8 out of the last 11 he’s been over 18 minutes a night.

I say go with Hornqvist-Arnott-Dumont as the top line and let O’Reilly center Sully and Erat for a while.

More fun than a stick to the face!
