Nashville Predators pick up Calgary forward Dustin Boyd for draft pick

The Nashville Predators ended up making an addition on the NHL's Trade Deadline day, picking up Dustin Boyd from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a  4th-round draft pick this summer.

Scouting Report

Assets
  • Works hard and plays an all-around game typical of the Flames organization. Can step up the offense when his team needs it most. Plays center or wing.
Flaws
  • Must add more strength to better compete against big NHL defenders. Isn't a natural playmaker, which may limit him to winger duty at the highest level.
Career Potential
  • Two-way forward.

Boyd has been a pretty effective 5-on-5 forward for Calgary, with the lowest Goals Against/60 minutes figure on the team. He might help on the PK, but he was not at all one the Flames' primary penalty killers. Nashville, however, has struggled on the PK this season and a change in personnel might not hurt.

Boyd makes $650,000 this season and will be a restricted free agent this summer.

Check the commentary over at SB Nation's Calgary Flames blog, Matchsticks & Gasoline, and you'll see fans upset that a legitimate (if limited) NHL player is getting traded for just a 4th-round pick, which has a small chance of turning into a useful asset.

If Boyd plays as well in Nashville as he did in the 06 World Juniors. This is going to go down as a steal

I am amazed and delighted

that we got such a steal from a team that is chasing us in the standings. I’m rather confused by Calgary’s deadline moves. I know they made their big deals before the Olympic break, but Staois and Toskala… really? Ok…

maybe he can jump onto Legwands line. that way it won’t just be him and ward in the offensive zone, and he can be better defensively than Smithson too.

I agree

Smitty is awesome in so many ways, but an offensive powerhouse he is NOT.

I was just trying to figure out who he might be able to bump out of the lineup, and Smithson definitely came to mind. He’s not an offensive threat, and his PK work hasn’t been anything to write home about this year. It’s an option…

I like this idea

If Boyd has potential and is sound on D, stick him with Leggy and Ward immediately. It’ll rein in Tootoo/Wilson/O’Reilly some, but still.

Here’s an in-depth assessment I did for Boyd a couple of summers ago.

Here’s the one from this summer.

Hopefully those shed some light on the player for you.
