Did the Nashville Predators help themselves at the NHL Trade Deadline?
The bell has rung, and the NHL Trade Deadline has passed; just how did the Nashville Predators do?
After the jump, let's summarize all the moves and take a look...
What's In
The Predators added an offensively gifted defeseman, and a forward who can fill in on a depth line and perhaps kill penalties.
What's Out
Also, 2nd & 4th Round draft picks this summer.
It should also be noted that with Grebeshkov in the lineup, Cody Franson and Alexander Sulzer have basically been squeezed out.

Franny better not be squeezed out
Franson and Grebeshkov give a dynamite (albeit young) 2nd PP defensive pair and we can stop wasting TOI on a FWD at the point.
Franson’s getting reassigned :(. As is Sulzer. We might have the best defensive corps in the entire NHL, bar none, between Milwaukee and Nashville.
Weber/Suter
Hamhuis/Klein
Grebeshkov/Boullion
Franson/Sulzer
Laakso/Dietrich
Ellis/Blum
Josi/Olivier-Roussel
That is obscene, guys.

That said...
I think there’s a pretty decent chance that Franson will be recalled once rosters expand in a few days.
I can see us carrying seven defensemen down the stretch and into the playoffs.

The rosters were expanded yesterday
More fun than a stick to the face!
On the Forecheck is SB Nation's blog covering the Nashville Predators.
Thanks!
I was thinking there was about a two or three day delay for some reason. I still think Franson may find himself back up this season.

No blockbusters, but all in all, well done.....
Grebeshkov was a great move.
I’m glad Hammer is staying.
And Dustin Boyd….. I kind of have a good feeling about.
not a big fan
I’ll get over it, but Grebeshkov squeezes out Franson who I feel is better offensively, and Boyd is just a better Ryan Jones, and won’t get any playing time.
We got two superfluous pieces for two picks and Jones. I’ll reserve final judgment but right now, me no likey.

Disagree Chris.
I’ve said all along that my belief was that scoring was not the biggest issue for this team. Their big issues revolved around both sides of the special teams play.
Boyd definitely seems to be big shot in the arm for the PK. Firstly, he’s a good PKer in general. Secondly, his speed fits into their preferred PK strategies of being agressive out high. I think this was a perfect pickup for Nashville while giving up nothing.
Grebeshkov is a really good pickup if he can turn around his play this season to his usual standard. He adds experience to the blueline and more offensive skill to the PP- particularly if Franson continues to play a role down the road after the roster size limits expand. He also gives us options in the postseason as well being a RFA.
I also like keeping Hamhuis. While having a down year to this point, Hamhuis can be the perfect top-four defenseman. Given his skill and potential, and the current chemistry of the team, I like the fact we kept him.

I like what Poile did compared to last year (which was nothing)...
…but I’m still really confused. We needed a goal scorer. I’m not sure how Boyd will work out but he just seems like another Jones (Boyd .27 points/game, Jones .3 points/game).
I also don’t like Franson being pushed out.
Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

that should be reversed
Boyd was .3, Jones .27

Boyd’s a center, for one thing, and faster than Jones. He’s an upgrade.

Does it matter when you're stuck on the 3rd or 4th line anyways?

absolutely
Do Colin Wilson, Marcel Goc, and Jordin Tootoo matter? Then Dustin Boyd will matter.

Well I'm just saying
that I don’t see how he bumps any of those guys down. I’m not bashing Boyd or anything, I just don’t see him as an upgrade. I’m sure he’s a good player. I was just expecting more of at least a 2nd-liner to help out with the PP.

I like it
I know we all wanted a top-line scorer (I, for one, was hoping for Poni), but realistically there were not very many options out there. We probably would have overpaid. Instead, we added some solid depth at both D and Forward positions, and we gave up very little in the process. It’s difficult to see how Boyd fits in right now, but remember that injuries can (and will) happen down the stretch. When that happens, we’ll be glad we gave up a 4th round pick. Also, the fact that they are both RFAs is really ideal: we can re-sign them if we want them or let them go at no loss if we don’t want them.
…I will miss Franson, though.
