Friday's news: New Preds chair wants to lighten the load

With two victories coming out of the Olympic break, the Nashville Predators have gotten their dash to the playoffs off to a good start. Tonight, however, they face a big test in Detroit, which is right behind them in the Western Conference standings.

Besides checking out Chris' Game Day Preview, follow after the jump for your morning hockey news, which includes a glimpse into the priorities that new team chairman Tom Ciggaran holds for the Preds, a detailed look at new acquisition Dustin Boyd from a Calgary blogger who has tracked his development over the last few years, and an absolutely nasty hit put on former Pred Scott Nichol in last night's San Jose/Montreal game...

Predators News

New Predators chairman commits to Nashville, seeking new investors - Nashville Business Journal:
Brandon Gee lands an insightful interview with Tom Cigarran, who emphasizes the need to pare down the team's debt load. To me, that is the single-biggest factor that can be addressed trim costs around the team and help them increase the player budget while still relying on NHL revenue sharing. If that means taking most of the profits from a playoff run and paying down debt, I'd be very happy with that.

That hit on Nichol last night....

first, he was slashed and hooked, then, he was slammed from behind in to the end-boards, all on the same play. Nasty Nasty play by Lapierre…. and no call. Could have been several penalties. Should have also been a game misconduct. Coulda-Shoulda! I hope Lapierre gets suspended for a few games for that stupid hit. The Hockey Gods will get him in the end.
Speaking of hockey gods, I was glad to see Lundqvist lose last night after getting in Crosby’s face and accusing him of diving. Should have just minded his net, and kept his trap shut…..the Hockey Gods strike again.
And lastly, how bout that Scotty Walker!

Speaking of players in Preds history...

who was that guy wearing “2” on his sweater last night? Looked a lot like the guy who wore that number a few years ago.

Without the pressure...

Without the pressure of an expectant wife and a mid-season trade lingering overhead and having expressed his desire to stay with the Predators and subsequently being told the only way to meet his salary demands is to go deep into the playoffs…I expect a true “contract year” performance out of Hammer the rest of the season…
