USA avoids demotion - IIHF.com
Team USA wraps up its horrific World Championships with a shootout win over Italy (yes, Italy). They avoid getting bumped down to the second tier for next year's WC's, but that's about the only positive thing one can say about their run in Germany.
N.H.L. Playoffs on Versus Find a Growing Audience - NYTimes.com
Is the Versus strategy finally starting to pay off for the NHL? Viewership for the first two playoff rounds is the highest since 1994 in the US, and more than double what Versus did back in 2006. Thanks to reader Scott for passing this one along.

On matching lines, abandoning strengths and the playoffs - Puck Daddy
Justin Bourne lays out a case for line-matching being overrated. I'm inclined to agree when it comes to matching forward lines on the fly, but see more of an opportunity for making sure your 3rd defense pair doesn't get caught against the opposing team's top scoring line.
Dale Tallon to replace Randy Sexton as Florida GM - Puck Daddy
If I'm a Panthers fan, I don't know that this is terribly exciting. Tallon enjoyed recent success in Chicago, but spun his wheels for a long time there, starting as their Director of Player Personnel back in 1998.

Hockey on Comcast's Versus
gives the channel an identity. It also gives the sport a reliable place in the cable lineup. Fans at Wachovia Center know that Philadelphia-headquartered Comcast is a strong corporate supporter of the Flyers, and when the company completes its purchase of NBC Universal the prospects for coordinated exposure of the NHL on Versus/NBC and its affiliate cable channels are good. Contrast that with the inattention the NHL received when hockey aired on ESPN and a return there doesn’t look so promising to hockey viewers, given its commitment to so many other sports. The TV deal that the NHL, constrained as it was by the lockout, signed with Comcast’s then-Outdoor Life Network doesn’t look so bad now, does it? Let’s all hope it pays off in the new TV contract. We all realize the NHL’s crippling deficit is lack of TV exposure and revenue and perhaps this will be another step in the right direction.

Thank You Sharks!
From David Pollak in today’s blog:
Pre-game notes: Sharks helping Nashville flood relief effort tonight, local Emmy goes to broadcast crew
At tonight’s game, the Sharks Foundation will hold a charity auction and collect donations to benefit flood relief and recovery efforts in Nashville. Anyone who contributes will be eligible for a drawing to win an autographed, limited edition canvas artwork of forward Scott Nichol, who played for the Predators for four seasons before signing with San Jose last summer.
"The damage to the city has been horrible and any help from our Sharks fans will mean a lot to the Nashville community," Nichol said in a prepared statement released by the team. "It’s a great city with great people. My family really enjoyed our time there and wish the entire area the best in their recovery efforts."
The Sharks Foundation auction will be at a booth located just outside Section 124 on the main concourse with all proceeds benefiting The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
Heavy rains in early May caused massive flooding in downtown Nashville area, including the newly renamed Bridgestone Arena, where the Predators play. Over a foot of standing water found its way into the locker rooms and main offices.
Other San Jose ties to the Nashville community include Jed Ortmeyer, a Predator from 2007-2009, and ex-Shark Marcel Goc, who was signed as a free agent by Nashville in the off-season.
