Nashville Predators NHL Entry Draft Open Thread

The 2010 NHL Entry Draft is just hours away, so share your thoughts below as to what you'd like to see David Poile do tonight. Trade up? Trade down? Catch a falling star in Kiril Kabanov, the enigmatic Russian whose questionable attitude has undermined his All-World talent?

For your pre-draft reading, I'd suggest taking a look at 5 of the prospects who are ranked to go somewhere around the #18 position that Nashville holds, per James Mirtle's consolidated rankings:

Austin Watson (Left Wing, Peterborough Petes of the OHL) as previewed by Hockey Wilderness.

Emerson Etem (Right Wing, Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL) as profiled at Defending Big D.

Evgeny Kuznetsov (Center, Traktor Chelyabinsk in the KHL) as highlighted at The Cannon.

Nick Bjugstad (Center, Blaine High School in Minnesota) as reviewed at Western College Hockey Blog.

Dylan McIlrath (Defense, Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL) as scouted by Die By the Blade.

For a complete look at prospect reviews from across the SB Nation network, head over to Western College Hockey Blog, where they've been keeping a master list.

Who will the Predators select? I have no clue, and would only be surprised if they pick a goaltender. At the #18 spot, anyone they select is probably at least two years away from the NHL, so I have a hard time getting too worked up about drafting for a specific need.

For what its worth, my ‘wish list’ at pick 18, in this order: Emerson Etem, Austin Watson, Quinton Howden, Riley Sheahan. I like Bjugstad but doubt he falls that far.

I’m only interested in Kabanov in the 3rd round. He’s easily one of the most talented players in the draft so its worth taking that chance, in my opinion.

Emerson Etem

I really, REALLY want this guy. Hopefully he falls to the Preds and they don’t trade down.

Wow.

He’d be a great pick. Looking two years into the future, wouldn’t mind seeing him on the RW with O’Reilly as his Center playmaker.

Etem. He has some serious speed and looks like he has turbo when he sees breakaway chance.
Poile might piss you off sometimes, overall, though, he has made mostly positive moves, and a few brilliant ones, especially considering the budget he has been given to work with all these years. Our minor league affiliates are proving to be successful year after year, too. Success breeds success.

news thus far

Sounds like Keith Ballard has been traded to Vancouver for Steve Bernier and the 25th overall pick; while Edmonton is pushing hard to acquire the 2nd overall pick in addition to the 1st.

That could dampen the demand for Dan Hamhuis in Vancouver…

I imagine that it completely eliminates that demand, considering Ballard’s salary. Unless Sami Salo is retiring.

Hall goes #1

There was some interesting discussion in Edmonton as to whether he has a reckless style that could lead to injury concerns, but he should be fun to watch on that Oilers ice.

Edmonton is stocked at wing between Eberle, Pajaarvi-Svensson, Hall, Hemsky, and Penner. Thats a great setup, only problem is their defense and centers leave a lot to be desired.

It’s just sick what a great position Boston is in. An already-decent team gets the #2 overall pick, and still has Toronto’s 1st-rounder next year as well.

Seguin goes #2

I didn’t realize until recently that he plays for the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. I played in beer leagues for a couple years in the mid-90’s at the Compuware Arena in Plymouth, it’s a nice place. The only problem is that it has a Greek restaurant with a bar upstairs, and our best defenseman had a bad habit of warming up for the game with a few smokes & shots before coming downstairs to the locker room…

After this run of defenseman for picks 3-5, I wonder if anyone will trade up to grab the next-best center after Seguin… (Mr. Poile, are you listening? It would be nice)

I’d love Ryan Johansen, but not sure what it’d take to trade up – obviously our first, then what?

Columbus takes him at #4, a little bit of a surprise, right? I thought most projections had defensemen going for the next few picks.

Definitely a surprise, but he was the next best forward available. Especially odd considering CBJ’s lack of defense. But yeah, Brandon Gormley and Cam Fowler were supposed to be next.

Which of course means...

No complaints here

There are lots of good wingers on the way (Geoffrion, Beck, Bourque, Budish, etc.). Unless they could get a good center, which is looking increasingly less likely, I’m fine with stockpiling D.

by Dirk Hoag on Jun 25, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm also good with stock-piling

As long as we actually use the stock pile as assets to be traded and what-not to fulfill needs. We seem to hang on to them long enough to raise ‘em right and get ’em ready for the next gig and then give them away for a song because we can’t pay them. But I do agree we do have some talented forwards coming along for sometime in the future…but not now.

by TitanPredBearFan on Jun 25, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Remember...

they (Trotz and Poile) have talked about getting maximum picks, so they may trade down and still take a forward later.

by DonBorvio on Jun 25, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

One thing to remember, of course, is that so far the order is pretty scrambled but we haven’t seen anyone really low in the rankings jump up. Until then, we probably won’t see one of the more exciting prospects drop to #18.

Am I the only who prefers Watson to Etem? I think he’s more of that Nashville kind of player Poile is always talking about. Big, two way guy who’s best offensive weapon is his puck possession ability?

And its Austin Watson. Good, safe pick by Poile. Can’t go wrong here, I don’t think.

Still no Etem...

I wonder what the scouts don’t like?

by DonBorvio on Jun 25, 2010 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

I thought the knock on Etem is that he’s more of an athlete than a hockey player. Great skater, but a lack of hands and hockey smarts.
