New hockey season starts, but the Russian league's ambitions are melting away - The Moscow News
An interesting perspective here, which notes that the KHL isn't exactly keeping up with the lofty goals it has set for itself. As the new season begins, they're down 1 team from last year, and have failed to expand into new markets like Sweden and the Czech Republic.

A little disappointing,,,
While everyone around here will be giddy to hear of the KHL’s struggles, a truly continental sports league would have been interesting.
Working on my own take on this right now, but in my opinion, what really, really set them back was not being able to get AIK. If the Kontinental Hockey League can’t get a foothold in Scandinavia, then it will never truly be “Kontinental” and never have a remote chance at competing with the NHL.

As I wrote when the AIK opportunity first came up, Sweden represents a gateway for the KHL to the American or Canadian player. Stockholm is a world-class city that’s very easy for an English-speaker to live in, with nowhere near the “culture shock” of other KHL cities.

When did this season start? I was on the KHL site the other day and their schedule took me to last season. Even when I looked at the roster of Nabby’s new team, it didn’t even have him on the list. Unless I was completely looking at it wrong. (highly possible)
