Martin Erat placed on Injured Reserve

Josh Cooper reports from today's morning skate that Martin Erat has been placed on Injured Reserve by the Nashville Predators (adjust those Fantasy Hockey rosters, people!).  IR means that a player has to be out for at least seven days, and it can be retroactive to the date of the injury (likely the opener last Friday in Columbus), so this could mean as little as one or two more games lost for the Preds' top offensive forward.

NOTE: Updated the seven-day reference in the paragraph above after consulting the CBA. - Dirk

Or it could be a lot longer, we just don't know. All that has been said is that it's not related to his previous back injury from last season.

One optimistic angle to take on this is that it may be a sign that either Mike Fisher or Francis Bouillon (more likely Cube) are ready to come off Injured Reserve. Since the Predators currently sit at 23 Active Players, the roster limit, the only reason to put Erat on IR is if they needed to clear a roster spot.

I know we're only one week into the season, but this excerpt from my season preview of Marty rings eerily true:

The Negative: He spends weeks watching from the press box nursing various injuries, and other nights leaving you wondering if he should be there.

Didn't the $6 Million Man come with a warranty?
