Wednesday's notes: Trotz takes center stage
In some ways, the current struggles of the Nashville Predators can be looked upon as a golden opportunity - the team has a couple off days for meetings and practice, and the coaching staff should have the complete, undivided attention of their players. Just as the Big 3 turn the Preds' fortunes on the ice, this is a time when the two-time Jack Adams finalist Barry Trotz has the chance to show his stuff.
Even better, thanks to Pekka Rinne's heroics the team at least has a couple victories to hold Nashville up in the standings, unlike Columbus which remains the only winless squad in the NHL. That, and the fact that they've got wild animals on the loose tells me that yeah, things could be a whole lot worse.
Before we get to the hockey news this morning, two quick updates:
1. Barry Trotz said this morning on the 1st Quarter on 102.5 The Game that Niclas Bergfors will play tomorrow night. There's no excuse for missing Coffee With The Coach each Wednesday morning at 7:25 a.m., now that they've got a 102.5 The Game app...
2. Some readers had asked why Mike Fisher is staying home while Francis Bouillon is traveling with the team. The word I've received is that Bouillon needs the on-ice conditioning, while Fish needs to build up strength in his shoulder, and that's more easily done at the Preds' own facility rather than on the road.
And now, your morning hockey notes...

Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my!
That’s a great way for kids to get a few days off from school! :D
Maybe the animals got tired of watching the Jackets lose and are taking matters into their own paws! :D

Playing Bergfors, eh?
I see that he received my angry letter.

I knew I had the wrong name in my head there. But some guy out of the stands named Schaeffer would do better than Luongo right now too, LOL!

A) Lou’s no stranger to slow starts and B) there’s been a lot of speculation about whether they ought to be shopping Schneider, which would mean plenty of starts.
Either way, since I have Schneider on my fantasy team, I’d love to see him get the starts.

Funny you say that
I drafted Luongo and Rinne in the first two rounds. Guess who is getting the start tomorrow??
I guess I'll never understand Trotz logic..
Why is Spaling playing with the top line? Has he earned that spot? Why is Smith floundering with McGratton and Bergfors…WTF? Smith is just about the only player we have shooting the puck on a consistent basis.
So let me get this straight, Smith goes for 2 goals and 2 assists in the first two games, then gets relegated to 3rd and fourth line minutes…yeah…that makes a ton of sense to me…UGH.
Bergfors is useless, he lollygags around in practice and in the game. The only way Bergfors might be servicable is putting him on a purely offensive line with say Smith centering and Hornqvist on the other side.

wait and see
The line combo’s were about getting to “know each other again”…..nothing permanent is my guess..
Poile is probably hoping for Fish to come back soon or searching for an available veteran trade to infuse some life and vigor into this team. youth works only when you are winning.
Watching the Jamie Benn goal brings up a long disputed point
What were the Calder voters smoking a few years back when voting Mason over Rinne for the Calder trophy. After that, Mason has been arguably one of the worse goaltenders in the league. Also, another head scratcher, Rinne didn’t even get voted into the All-Star game last year? What was up with that? What’s taking the media so long to recognize Rinne’s greatness???
Rinne, please please re-sign with Nashville!!!
Also it was more of a fan vote for the ASG last year than the league picking people. There were 4 Eastern Conference goalies and 2 Western, had it been the old format I think he would have gotten in.

I suppose it depends on two things for Rinne, Suter, and Weber. One is whether they think the team can ever contend for the Stanley and the other, of course, is money. I know Weber says he wants to stay in Nashville, but………….
"I am you, you are me, and we are all together" Beatles
If Poile continues with his current mode of operation, he may well be making the fates of the big 3 a self fulfilling prophecy. IMHO, of course. :)

Sheer timing.
Remember that Rinne didn’t blossom until after the Olympic break. His rookie season was good but not stellar. Also keep in mind that Rinne was out injured during voting for the ASG. No one knew what to expect.
