Warning: I wrote this in a frustrated rage, and my thoughts are completely disorganized, and for that I apologize, but if I don't do it now, I probably never will. That being said, as soon as this hockey team gets some hockey players on it, I'll take back everything you're about to read (or just skim over or whatever)
Look at these guys. Go ahead, I'll wait. Look at the average age, years of NHL experience, the stats, whatever you want. Don't get me wrong, I get excited about the young guys as much as the next guy, but, come on, how stupid do you think I am? It seems like the front office thinks we haven't seen Colorado or Edmonton play over the past few years. That's been working out great for them, hasn't it?
They kept Cal O'Reilly instead of Marcel Goc (mistake!), and guess who got the healthy scratch tonight? They traded Cody Franson for some "cap space," allegedly. They couldn't afford to keep Joel Ward, but somehow we're supposed to believe they can afford at least two of our "big 3." And speaking of our fearless leader, here's a shot across the bow: how about getting on the scorecard, cap'? Logic says that these guys should be giving their best seasons since 1.) they're all likely to get a substantial raise next year, and 2.) they're all likely to be playing for different teams next year, but aside from astronomical ice time, these guys haven't been doing much leading from the front.
And look at the guys behind #6 and #20. Kevin Klein is our third best defenseman. W.T.F. Kevin *%@^ing Klein.
I watch these guys play, and I think, "these guys just don't belong in the NHL." And that was during the Edmonton game! Everyone says these guys will get better over the course of the year, but that's because they can't get worse! These guys are getting out hustled, out skilled, out worked, they're too weak, they're too slow, they're disorganized, and sometimes they don't look like what they know what they're doing. The only line that can score on this team is whoever is paired up with Colin Wilson and David Legwand. The rest of the guys are just mucking up the ice.
We all know how David Poile has his reasoning behind his decisions, but there's no way he can look at me with a strait face and tell me he actually thought these guys could compete. If anyone has put their neck on the line its Poile, but unfortunately Trotz is going to likely get a lot of the blame for trying to force an AHL team to pretend to be an NHL team, and that's not very fair.
Lastly, don't get me wrong, I like these guys. I love these guys. I want them to be great, but DAMN, I'm having serious fears that we may be looking up at Columbus in the standings sooner than later.
Thanks for your time, hopefully it wasn't a complete waste for you.
