Shea Weber fined, not suspended for boarding Jannik Hansen
Jim Diamond is reporting on Twitter that Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber has been fined $2500, but not suspended, by the NHL after boarding Vancouver's Jannik Hansen in the 3rd period of last night's 5-1 loss to the Canucks. It would have been the first suspension in Weber's NHL career, and the team's first since Shane O`Brien sat down for two games for high-sticking Florida's Stephen Weiss back in January.
Here's video of the hit in question, about which Weber told Josh Cooper he "didn't even think it was a penalty at the time"...
One topic for debate here is how this reflects on Weber as a captain - is this is a case of him venting some understandable frustration over the Preds' play of late, or a loss of composure that one shouldn't expect from a team leader? Since it occured during a delayed penalty on Ryan Suter, it put the Preds into a 5-on-3 disadvantage, the second penalty by Weber last night that did so.

Meaningless
Not 3%, not 0.3%, but .03% of his annual salary = nothing. He spent more on the machete he shaves with.

Shush, you…You never stick your tongue out after getting a slap on the wrist, and proclaim it didn’t hurt—you look wounded and contrite.

Dude, is that an LSD relapse?
Cause you’re trippin’.
The same thing happens every single year. Just weather the storm and join me in trying to get Trotz fired for his insane line combinations and insistence on playing a goon.

Now you're being silly...
Who did he have to play other than McGrattan?
Erat, Fisher, and O’Reilly were all out with injuries.

This is not the way a team leader is supposed to lead. Not a good thing. Things are going to have to change or we are in deep doodoo. It’s bad enough having clueless rookies but quite another to have a leader who’s taking out his frustrations by trying to hurt opponents.
"I am you, you are me, and we are all together" Beatles
If he was trying to hurt him, then he would have gotten hurt. Hansen turned his back as Weber was approaching. Yes, the puck was gone, and yes he was probably taking out some frustration, but so what? I wish more players on this team would show some emotion

Really?
If Shea wanted to hurt him, they would have taken him off on a stretcher.
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
It wasn't a loss of anything.
It was a clean board on Hansen. He didn’t try and hurt the guy. It wasn’t a high hit. And all Hansen got was a bloody nose, suggesting that Weber didn’t even hit him that hard. It wasn’t a frustration thing. It was a hockey play.
This is a non-issue.
I’m already over it.

I agree...
I agree 100%. I like my leader to show some emotion. He should be frustrated as they all should be. Also, it is way too early to be giving up on these guys and calling for BTs removal. He is the same guy mentioned for coach of the year honors virtually every year. Relax…it’ll get better.

Hopefully this is a one-time mental breakdown
I noted here and here on Twitter last night that Weber has been making poor decisions on the ice — he was penalized for roughing in Edmonton the other night as well, I believe, and at a crucial time.
The usually tacit Weber can make statements on the ice with more than one tool in his kit — a big, open-ice hit, a booming slapper….even a fight, which Colin Wilson (?) and Jordin Tootoo stepped up to do last night in Weber’s (and McGrattan’s) absence.
File this one under “conduct unbecoming,” and watch carefully over the next few games.
I think the general impression among the non-rabble canuck fans
is that it was deservedly a penalty
but not suspension-worthy
(for what it’s worth)

Frustrations finally boiling over!!!
The one thing that has always upset me about this team is the complete lack of emotion. It is nice to finally see people getting frustrated and mad instead of listening to them talk about being frustrated and mad. As the captain of our team, I would want nothing less than that out of Weber. He is a big strong guy, and he needs to step up and show his frustration when things are going bad, look at Jarome Iginla, Zdeno Chara, Lecavalier, they don’t hesitate to drop the gloves for their teams. Granted, I don’t want Weber fighting often because he is way to important to our team, but there comes a time and a place where as the captain, you have to say enough is enough. I’m not condoning taking runs at players or boarding them, but stepping up the physical play and showing that frustration over how horrible the team has played lately.

2500.00?? What is that?? One shift???? LOLOLOL
Shanaban must still be skeered of Webers beard.
This team needs more fighters if we’re gonna get beat 5-1 every nite. If a hockey game ain’t breakin; out, then break out the fists.
It would have been a game
If he had been suspended before.
The NHL system of handing out punitive justice is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out of whack.
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
If he really wanted to show some emotional leadership...
…he should have bitten Burrows. Just sayin’
We'll miss you Belak...
Go Predators!

What is boarding exactly??
A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
This is the way it’s written in the rulebook. Sorry, but that’s just a poorly written rule. It gives the ref discretion to call a penalty on any hit against the boards. You may as well just say you can’t hit anyone against the boards.
Hopefully Dirk will post my article in the next few topics...
It says pretty much that although I appreciate the effort and aggression of Weber, that is not a reason to let things get out of hand and lead our team in PIM, not counting fighting majors. He is also ranked 9th in the league for defenseman for PIM. He can play with an edge, but at what cost when the edge cuts you back?

Quit being a stat geek...
How many games have been played?
If this continues at game 40, then I would be worried.
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
Jeremy’s point is that the team has been taking a lot of penalties, especially Shea, and that those penalties have cost us. There’s a line to be drawn between being physical and aggressive and taking dumb penalties that we can’t kill because Shea’s in the box. We need to stay out of the box. Our best penalty killers really need to stay out of the box. Shea’s position as captain makes it that much more important that he gets a handle on this trend.
R.I.P. Belak, Rypien, Boogaard, Lokomotiv.
Lightning Goalies--0 for 4 on the poke check in October 2011
Part Predator, part Lightning.
It's just a suggestion...
it starts from the captain down through the players…Our captain is taking too many dumb penalties…not getting beat on a play and hooking-type penalties (Suter is taking care of that one begrudgingly) but the “I’m aggressive and frustrated and I’m gonna run this guy and hope it doesn’t get called” penalties. In the Shana-ban days now, players know where the line is and Weber being overly aggressive has crossed that line a couple times already with the cross-checks..Can he play more disciplined? Yeah..and when he does, I’m pretty sure the others will follow suit. When the wheels fall off, it’s up to the captain and coach to keep their heads…and so far, I’m not to thrilled about where either head is…you know where I’m going with that one I’m sure ;)

Did you just see Parise beat Niemi like a rented mule on that penalty shot?! We be needing some of that magic. ;)

If Weber doesn't get his act in check...
It’ll make it that much easier for a decision to swap Weber for Parise…maybe, just maybe you’ll get your wish..;)

I saw they used Kovalchuk and Parise AGAIN in the shootout.
Sounds like they got a smart coach over there.

Just a question...
Does anyone think the Great Stortini will get his lunch handed to him tonight by Ivanans? (who used to be in the Nashville system btw)
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
pretty sure the $2500
Is the maximum the league can fine Weber.
