I think a reasonable expectation for this week is 29 shots on goal…. total
60% of the time it works every time

At This Stage...
I’d say they come out of the week with 2 points.
I'm just hoping to see some more
cohesive play at this point. It seemed to improve some over the course of the road trip but I don’t think we can’t afford to just tread water too long. If we can get back to controlling the puck, especially in our end, the shots/chances will come.
Any ETA on Erat/Fisher? I think getting those guys into the lineup are the quickest way to get things moving in the right direction…
Erat’s not even practicing yet, so I can’t imagine he’ll be back soon.
The issue with Fisher is shoulder strength, so that doesn’t sound like an “any day now” deal either, unless we can find him a can of Popeye’s spinach.

That’s the kind of answer I was afraid of.
Well, back to crossing fingers for the return of the Cube and hoping that the youth can settle down sooner rather than later. hell, if we can keep from pulling a CBJ maybe this can even benefit us in the long run…

1-1-1
There will be a good showing tomorrow, but we’ll ultimately fall to SJ in to OT.
We’ll fall apart against the Bolts, standing around watching them cycle.
Come out with some fire and score early on Anaheim, fire it up and win playoff style, 5-3.
None of this will actually happen, but it sounds good!
We'll miss you Belak...
Go Predators!
2-1
I think this week we win atleast 2 of them, we usually struggle against the sharks but I think we will beat them and Tampa, now the ducks game I’m not to sure about, I’m pretty sure it will involve a lot of hard hitting though, but I’m afraid they’ll will get us

The bad thing is that Ellis has. (and now I have to go scrub my mind out)

Also
does it look to anyone else like the Caps stole a page or two of our playbook? Maybe it’s Vokoun… I have watched 3 or 4 of their games, including the beating they gave the wings, and their ability to push the play to the boards and then capitalize (see what I did there?) play so opportunistic and patient makes them scary good. Makes me wonder where we would be now if our first-round-Russian snipers stuck around as long as theirs did.
On a related note, has anyone told Rads that Arnott is gone? Maybe I should tweet him.
hadn’t you heard? Boudreau is a defensive mastermind. He came up with that all by himself.
In all seriousness, that’s what they’ve been trying to do since last season. And as I recall, the team’s crash-and-burn performance in the playoffs last year was blamed on this very system that is getting such praise right now. Suffice to say that the jury’s still out on it.

One word CAustin. Vokoun …and you know it. ;) I smell a finals appearance.
…there was this other team last year that got in sync with a pretty frustrating defensive system and almost rolled all the way to the finals (with a senior citizen for a goalie) Hmmm… who was that?
by Marcus Newman on Oct 24, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions
Difference: Caps had very good goaltending last year all year. Vokoun isn’t going to fix the problems that got them swept (now, if only I could remember who did that….)
whereas Smellis was total crap.

Agreed. The Caps didn’t exactly have goaltending problems…until they got lit up in the second round. That’s the playoffs though and the Bolts stuck to the gameplan in the postseason and the Caps didn’t.
…if it was all played on paper though, the Wings would go undefeated every year, NYR and TOR would be historically well managed, the Canuckles wouldn’t be 0-40 for the Cup, and we would play in Hamilton, ON.
by Marcus Newman on Oct 24, 2011 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I see what you did there. Well done.
Anyway, what I find kinda interesting about the Caps right now is that Ovechkin has been doing just OK. Not bad, by any means, but not amazingly super great either. I feel like he was CONSTANTLY all over the highlights and news and stuff for a few years, but now you don’t really hear about him that often. Obviously he’s contributing to the team, but that’s just an interesting little observation. (Or am I just not paying attention?)

His offensive production has declined (to a measly point per game clip) so your spidey sense is not out of whack by any means. I think he is under a ton of pressure to win a cup too and trying to play a more veteran game. No different that any other uber-elite player really. …and while I think it’s foolish to expect anyone in this era to get 50+ each season, I also think his slight decline is mostly because of the system they are playing now. It seeems to me that from 2005 -2010 the plan in Washington was simply, “get the puck to AO”. Last year, and after 5 seasons of being top rung offense and bottom rung defense, I guess they noticed that AO (and most of the other 47 first rounders they picked up in the last decade) can play pretty damn good on the other end of the ice too and decided that instead of trying to score 400 goals per season they might put a little effort into keeping the puck out of their own net. Hard to view them as “successful” with anything less than winning the Cup given the lineup but they sure as hell look good so far this year.
Here’s hoping we reap the rewards of their salary cap hell next fall regardless of how they end up this year.
by Marcus Newman on Oct 24, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions
They did steal a page out of our playbook, Marcus. Joel Ward. They know what they need to get better, and they were willing to pay a lot for it. He got his second on Saturday, but it’s not about the goals. Caps are rolling him with Jason Chimera and Brooks Laich on a real good third line right now. If they go deep, it’ll be because of guys like that. And Vokoun.
They made a commitment to defense and a more responsible system last year in reaction to getting Halak-ed in the first round the previous year and everyone screaming at them to do so. I think they’re still settling into their system. Honestly, as a fan, I kind of miss the high-flying Caps of two years ago, but this is way they need to learn how to play if they want to win a Cup. They’re learning. Ovi gets full marks for sacrificing points and maybe trophies to modify his game. Wideman helps – that takes some pressure off of Mike Green, who folks in DC are starting to chatter about as a guy who’s ready to explode and get back in the Norris conversation (if he stays healthy). Good offseason pickups in Joel and Brouwer … and Vokoun, the steal of the summer.
It’s only a few weeks, but this team is one to watch. Especially if Nick Backstrom is Nick Backstrom (so far he is) and the power play is rolling (it is). Often thought the Preds would be good trade partners with the Caps because they need a little bit of what the other has.
Have to admit, I had my doubts Boudreau would get this team to adhere to his new gameplan, but so far, so good. They have the players to win it all, that’s for sure.

Predators haven’t won a home game since last April’s Game 6 against Anaheim. That’s five in a row. Three playoff teams coming in this week. From what I’ve seen so far, they’ll be 0-3 for the week.
