Nashville Predators trade Cal O'Reilly to Phoenix for fourth-round draft pick
Today's news comes straight from the Preds' insider on twitter:
#Preds pick up Phoenix's 2012 fourth rounder for Cal O'Reilly
The move speaks less to the talent of Cal and more to the development of Nashville's young forwards. O'Reilly was a solid contributor for the first part of last season before going down to injury.
In the time he spent on IR names like Blake Geoffrion and mid-season acquisition Mike Fisher made names for themselves at center. Add in the early-season success of Craig Smith and it's not surprising to see Cal dealt to a team that needs some help at center.
In addition, O'Reilly had been a healthy scratch for the last few games, and with Hornqvist and Fisher healthy again, and Martin Erat close behind, the future did not bode well for Cal.
Could this be a set up for a bigger deal? Do you like the move? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
Full team release after the jump:
Nashville, Tenn. (October 28, 2011) - Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired a fourth-round pick in the 2012 Entry Draft in exchange for forward Cal O'Reilly. The trade is pending O'Reilly passing a physical.
The Predators now have nine draft picks for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to be held June 22-23, 2012 at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. - their own picks in the first, second and fourth through seventh rounds in addition Toronto's third-round pick and the New York Rangers' sixth-round selection, and now, Phoenix's fourth-round selection.
The Nashville Predators wind down a three-game home stand tomorrow night against the Anaheim Ducks (7 p.m. on 102.5 The Game), closing out the week with Halloween in Smashville. Fans in attendance are encouraged to dress in costume and come out early to enjoy a ghoulish plaza party including costume karaoke, reverse trick-or-treating and fall-themed games. Why couldn’t we maybe get Turris at least? He is trying to get out of there. Perfect opportunity for change of scenery for him and we actually get a guy who could be decent.
A. because we needed an open roster spot for Erat
B. because Phx refuses to trade him

Smith, Smithson, Fisher, Legwand, and Wilson = our natural centers. Necessary move. Sheds a little salary compared to the inevitable injury call-up.
Cal was always a nice guy. After meet the team, he signed a hockey stick I had for him even after they cut off the line. Good luck, Cal!
Hard to judge this trade. While yes we did need to make A move with Marty coming off IR tomorrow and then the development of the young guys. Was Cal the piece that really needed to go? yes and no We have plenty of centers (seems like every line has guys that were centers playing on it) but personally I liked cal as a player. But I will have to wait to see what happens with the draft before I can say it was a good or bad move. We seem to have done really well in the 4th round of the draft but who knows.
Meh. He didn’t appear to be fitting in very well this season. Someone had to be moved and we couldn’t take back a player, so we got what we could for a guy who would have inevitably been claimed if he’d been waived to go to Milwaukee.

my thoughts exactly… oh and don’t forget lombardi who is healthy and playing well in toronto… how the F did Poile get nominated for GM of the year? such BS… i liked Cal a lot… he had talent, something we don’t exactly have a ton of here…. and for a fourth rounder? and don’t hold your breath anyone for more moves to come out of this… just more general awesomeness by the powers that be

We got something for him.
If we cut him, he would have been picked up on waivers by another team – i.e. no compensation.
A fourth round pick is better than nothing.
Good luck Cal.
When do these minor deals ever lead to bigger one's?
The answer, of course, is never. It’s just ’ol Dirk trying to get our hopes up again. ;D

So, we turned a redundant player that hasn’t had a good game since this time last season into a draft pick. Problem? So what if succeeds somewhere else? He wasn’t going to get the opportunity here. We have to accept that we’re stuck with Mayor McCheese and the nearly low-risk crap shot that Poile took with Bergfors, those are sunk costs at this point. Smith and Wilson are developing while we’ve got enough centers to field a centers-only softball team. They’ve also shown far more upside than O’Reilly has, especially in the Predators’ system.
Cal is better off and the Preds don’t have two roster spots devoted to scratched forwards.

Bingo
Poile either had to try to send O’Reilly down to Milwaukee and watch him get claimed off waivers, getting nothing, or make a trade and get something. We can get another forward that can play 4th line minutes with a 4th round pick, and we can luck out and get someone even better. Our 4th round pick from 3 years ago turned out pretty good.
I do believe we’ve had many 4th round picks not do much for us as well. Losing Cal isn’t an earth shattering loss, but it does continue a troubling trend of giving up what were billed as budding offensive players for little to no return (Santorelli, Peverley, Jones, Cal, etc.).
Might be best to just not play up kids who haven’t done anything yet in the big leagues.

That’s totally fair, yeah. It’s walking that nice line between how long do you wait for him to improve, stop getting hurt, and play consistently – cause he can be really good when he’s playing well, versus just giving him up to get something in return. I’m just a little bittersweet about it. I really liked Cal, but hopefully this’ll be a good move for us both.

quick to jump the gun are we??
SK74 was in the same position this time last year and see how it turned out? Are we giving up on Bergfors just 9 games into the young season??
I’m just pointing out that there were other options if waivers were the route we were to go in. IMO, not much of a talent difference between Cal and Bergs. Also a difference with SK74 being out of the lineup early last season with a foot injury and Bergfors being a healthy scratch.

Bear Force
I’m not giving up on him yet – Barry has created works of art from (seemingly) scraps of junk (i.e., Tits!). I’m interested tro see how he progresses over the season. In Barry’s interview after the game yesterday (I think that’s the right one), he said that he’s still getting to know Bear-Force, and vice versa, so that gives me hope that their relationship, and, subsequently, BF’s role on the team, will continue to progress and improve.

Beer... Now there's a temporary solution.-Homer Simpson
Exactly. In the PR Department, Poile got roasted for letting Rich Peverley get claimed for nothing. Here he gets an asset back for Cal. It’s been said that “Cal needs to be on a scoring line” to be effective, but if we sent down any of Hustlechuk/Geoffrion/McCheese go down, that’s not the kind of line he’d be on. And Smith isn’t going anywhere either.
With Smith and Fisher in place, he wasn’t going to be cracking the Top 6 positionally. So I give the trade a pass for now.
Phoenix are a bunch of suckers!!! Hahaha! I can’t believe they gave up a pick for him!

Yes - Smart Move
The “do well somewhere else” comments about players has always applied to every team and a whole lot of players. There are many more who are traded who fail miserably but they get forgotten quickly. Anyway, the trade is a big part of the strategy of how the game plays out and how the system works.
We’ve had our share of benefits from similar situations and I think we’ll be just fine without Cal O’Reilly. Maybe Cal does well elsewhere and maybe not. So what? We need the roster spot and we don’t need a fragile and injury-prone Cal. Just hope he passes the Phx physical.
We now have 9 picks in ’12 draft.

Good move.
He no longer had a spot on this roster. He wasn’t all that good anyways.
Question for Dirk:
Why is Roman Josi still shown on our IR list, like he’s with the Preds and not the Ads?
Because he was with the Preds in training camp when he got hurt, and you can’t assign a guy to the minors while he’s injured (the same thing happened with Lundmark last year). Once he comes off IR he’ll be officially assigned to Milwaukee.

Looking at capgeek and our current roster, if not for us carrying a 23 man roster, which hasn’t been our custom in the past, we would be dangerously close to being under the cap floor. Or, put another way, the Dumont buyout is keeping us over the cap floor.

While i am always sad :( when we trade a player
I am not at all surprised. Cal seemed to be a superfluous component. Getting something in return is good. While you may not be all that excited about a 4th rounder, all those draft picks can be packaged along with another cog to get a good player, without having to give up a truly valuable component of this team (Weber, Sk74, Suter, etc…)

I liked O'reilly
His vision and puck movement were great for someone so young in their NHL career, and i believe he will be an assist machine in time. But with sk74 to fill that particular role here, and Smith being all around better at the center position, he just got squeezed out. The timing on this is unfortunate, had he been healthier and more effective, or given time to get there, he probably could have brought in a better return.

I'm really sorry some of yall didn't see this coming
but I sure as hell did…
With Smith moving to center, and clearly playing better than O’Reilly, can we look for DP to bundle him and some prospects for a legitimate scoring threat any time soon? Booth would have been a clear upgrade to all wingers on our team.
by Shawn Kehoe on Oct 23, 2011 5:23 PM CDT reply
Halfway there on my prediction. Poile isn’t as stupid as a lot of yall make him out to be. Give him a chance and we’ll see him turn a bunch of mediocre talent into that diamond in the rough. Don’t be surprised if Hornqvist is moved along with some prospects or draft picks to upgrade that wing spot. He’s been underachieving.
Hornqvist has been underachieving?
I mean he has tailed off since that 30 goal year, but he was the last pick of his draft year, still scored 21 last year, and has been battling injuries.
You could very well be right about him being dealt, tho. He definitely has value and if DP wants to make a move like that he’ll have to give up some value thats for sure.
Geez, if I quoted all the times I said Cal didn’t have a place in our lineup and would be a likely player to get moved, I’d have a quote-a-thon here! :D

maybe
Hornqvist would be the next I’d guess, if there is a next to go.
I don’t follow the Preds as closely as I do the Flyers, but O’Reilly never seemed to earn a spot in the lineup, despite having decent potential. He was an extra part to the team, not an important one. Getting a 4th pick in a good draft sounds like a decent return to me. It’s not like you don’t have enough prospects that can do his job, if necessary.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
As long as we are trading our talented offensive players who aren’t being given a real shot (stuck on 4th line with very little playing time) for very little in return, shouldn’t we have also thrown in Bergfors for a box of McNuggets?
