Tuesday's notes: Old Man Smithson leads by example

This morning's hockey notes kick off with a profile of Jerred Smithson, a guy who takes on a staggering amount of defensive responsibility, yet never fails to put his body on the line to help the Preds win. Even though the season is young, it seems like he's already blocked at least half a dozen shots of the ouch, that's really going to hurt in the morning variety, but somehow the guy never misses a shift.

That's why I've been adamant that he needs to appropriate Chris Johnson's erstwhile moniker, "Every Coach's Dream"...

How about this for Lindy?

Keep him up for ~40 games, then send him down and call up Smith. They’ll both at least get a bunch of games in at the AHL level and maybe a few in the NHL on back-to-backs. Then package one in a trade.

From what Mitch Korn said in his TGG interview, I don’t think this arrangement is really on their radar right now. Either way, a decision would have to be made pretty soon as both are RFAs at the end of this season.

plus/minus crap

according to several people because a player has a minus they are doing bad. currently smittty is minus and has fininshed the past seasons with a minus. obviously this stat doesn’t tell the whole story.

Stats per se never do.

In the 10-game report, I took the basic Corsi numbers and adjusted them to compensate for the fact that some guys start more shifts in the offensive end, while others (like Smithson) start in the defensive end.

Smithson’s Adjusted Corsi came out as tops on the team among regular players once you take that workload into account. Regular Plus/Minus is a horrifically bad stat, akin to judging the outcome of a 60-minute game on the basis of less than 1% of the action.

Boclair is an idiot

And probably doesn’t understand that a team needs a quality backup goalie, oh, in case the starting goalie gets hurt ( remember last season Mr Boclair). This Predator team is not an offensively focused team and plays a defensively focused game where quality netminders are needed for that style of game. Last year was Lindy’s first season – I don’t think many teams would shell out the big $$ that Mr Boclair seems to think the Preds can get for shopping Anders – he’s only had 23 NHL regular season games in his entire career so far.

by XVIII on Nov 8, 2011 9:51 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Perhaps

but I do think the clock is ticking on a trade involving Anders, not immediately, maybe not even this season, but for his sake I hope he is traded to a nice team that will take good care of him. I would hate to see him leave Nashville, but I would also hate to see him spend the net 7 years sitting on the bench waiting for back to backs so he can play.

Korn essentially said these guys were trade assets now, but he didn’t seem to expect any movement right away. http://thegoalieguild.com/2011/11/chatting-with-korn-rinne-lindback/

If they end up not playing in Nashville, they’re still assets to the Predators. And the better they become, the more possibility then, that we can turn those guys into a player we might need at another position, while still giving them [the goalies] an opportunity to go someplace where they are needed and wanted. But it’s early to be worried about that. …

as they become better talents, they become more valuable assets, and if they can’t help us, I’m sure they’ll help someone else. It’s our job to make them the best they can be. If they get traded for someone who can help our team, and they get a chance to grow, that’s great for everyone! And yet with injuries, depth is critical."

agreed

Of course at some point in time any one of the goal tenders (or any player without a NMC for that matter) could be trade assets. I just think Mr Boclair is a tad to early to be calling to shop Anders simply because Pekka now has a 7 year contract.

I think most fans are happy when one of your backups gets a starter shot somewhere else. With the limited positions available, how could you not be? I hope he eventually gets a shot akin to Kiprusoff after San Jose.

McCarty

was a favorite of mine before the Preds came to town. It’s hard to believe a guy in the modern era with a Cup winning goal on his record its working in a pawn shop. When you consider that guy is Darren McCarty…well…it gets a little easier to believe.
