Jonathon Blum on Twitter: "See y'all in Nashville tomorrow!"

After what was apparently a very short, temporary AHL assignment, Nashville Predators defenseman Jonathon Blum appears to be on his way back to Nashville, at least according to what he proclaimed on Twitter earlier this evening. Nothing official has taken place yet, but Josh Cooper of The Tennessean has confirmed the news with Blum himself.

Blum was assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals on December 12 after a lackluster start to his sophomore NHLseason. Assuming that he is being called back up in order to play, which defenseman will be the health scratch Tuesday night when the Preds skate at Washington?

I would think that it wouldn’t be Hillen after that save he made for Pekka. Josi seems to be playing well so far. Maybe Trotz will be punishing Klein for letting Oshie get in behind him, but intuition says no. Maybe Frankie is hurt again? He did seem to be throwing the body around during the Blues game though. Maybe since it’s vs. Washington we’re sitting BigErn and running 7 D-men in an effort to keep the workload down, leaving Webs and Sutes to only have to control the Caps 1st line.

Speculation is futile.

Hillen made the save for Pekka after knocking Pekka down and laying on him exposing an empty net…

Yeah, he didn’t dive down there to make the save. It was just fortuitous that he was lying there.

Well now we know why the called Blum up......

Just took a look at CapGeek and NHL Numbers and with K. Wilson being sent down, we were under the 48.3M cap floor. Had to bring someone up to get over the floor and avoid getting fined (or whatever they do to non- cap compliant teams).

Biggest payroll ever, eh? :/

Is there anyone out there

who we can pay to come and play great offense? Anyone available that is. I know there is a lot of great talent in the NHL, but who might be available to Nashville that can help the non-scoring situation? I may not understand well, but aren’t most teams still trying to hold on to their difference makers?

The article Josh Cooper wrote where he talked to Poile about the Philly trade rumors, Poile said he’s not looking to swap our difference makers for someone else’s difference makers. Does that mean we’re waiting for the bottom dwellers to throw in the towel and hope we can get someone who can help us from them? When will the bottom dwellers throw in the towel? Is Columbus willing to admit the season is over? How about the Ducks or the Avalanche, do they have any hope left for this season? Hurricanes or Islanders? (with the Devils still in the playoff hunt, I don’t think they are considering letting ZP go yet)

Who do they have that we can get that might help us? Realistically. We should probably be looking for Left Wingers, right?

This is not a comprehensive analysis, just hoping to get some discussion started.

I don’t know where to look for how much money each of them require, but it looks like there aren’t many options on these teams that are potentially much of an improvement for the Preds:
Ducks: no good LW’s, maybe we could move a utility guy to the other wing and rent Selanne for the rest of his last season (yeah right, I wish!)
CBJ’s: Vinny Propsal looks really capable and hasn’t been a Jacket for long, so maybe he’d be a good turncoat, and maybe since he’s old (36) he won’t fit into the Jackets rebuild mode plan, if they’re really going there. Or, RJ Umberger – he hasn’t missed a game since 07-08, consistently puts up solid numbers, and has had a tough start this year, may benefit from relocation.
NYI: Matt Moulson is quality, probably too good for the Islanders to let go.
COL: they’re not letting go of Landeskog (and we don’t need another rookie this season), Winnik doesn’t seem like an upgrade.
CAR: Jokinen looks like a good player, but doesn’t get as much rubber on net as I would like (49 SOG). Maybe Ponikarovsky, but he looks like he might be a bit of a defensive liability and he did terribly with the Kings last season (but he does have 4 PPG).

So on the teams that are looking to blow up right now, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of available LW that would improve the Preds. What about C or RW that can play the LW as well? is that really a good idea? I’d love to hear what you guys think.

Any forward at any position would help, we can be flexible in that way. But the big question for me is, is there really a will on Poile’s part to even make a deal? I’m not convinced there is. Just my opinion though.

As far as who might be available, that may take awhile to figure that out. Not to many teams are giving up on the season yet. It also depends on what we’re willing to part with in any given trade. IMO, as long as Rinne wins games for us like he’s been doing, Poile will just yawn at the whole trading idea.

Now, if we were seriously going after someone, the Kings are a team who may look to shake things up. Wonder if they would part with Dustin Brown? He definately fits what we do here. The Avs might look to deal Stastny, but his salary is a big load to take on. Umberger is an interesting possibilty. Isles unlikely to move any of their better players. Rutuu from the Canes might get moved at the deadline, could fit in well here, as could Larose. A. Kostitsyn from the Habs is a possibility, doubt we go that route though. Gagner from the Oilers could move, but he’s not much of a scorer. Highly doubt the Ducks move Ryan.

but what happens when Rinne has normal goalie stretches?

like Nov 19th – Dec 6th. I may be living in a delusion, but I want to believe that Poile isn’t blind to the team’s current weakness. When you have to win all your games based on sheer character and not skill, there’s a problem. He has been doing this a lot longer than I’ve been following hockey. I also would hope that he wouldn’t come out and just bald-faced lie about spending this team’s biggest salary this season. It seems like him saying that benefits him none and hurts his reputation, the team’s morale, and the fans support – not necessarily in that order. He’s got nothing to win and much to lose by saying he was gonna spend big if he’s not going to.

The problem I see is that the Preds don’t have any assets that can be traded away for a good return without hurting the team as much as helping. There are lots of good prospects, but how many of them would it take to net a top-6 forward?

by Only Fan In J.C. ? on Dec 19, 2011 2:14 AM EST up reply actions

Well, it was the owners who talked big about spending more, not sure if Poile repeated that or not. But the M.O. of this organization is to make the playoffs, so as long as Rinne gets us there, mission accomplished. Like you, my question is: don’t we aspire to be more than just a team getting to the playoffs?

As far as assest to trade, Ellis and draft picks can be moved, as can Watson for that matter. The rights to Radulov could be floated as well.

Speaking of Rads, I really hope Poile isn’t using a hoped of return by Rads next season as a selling point to both Suter and Weber to stay here. That would be, well, laughable really.
