Shea Weber Injury: Concussion announced by Nashville Predators
Kevin Wilson, the hockey communications manager for the Nashville Predators, brings the grim news via Twitter:
Shea Weber is out for Wed game with a concussion sustained at Dallas. He will be evaluated on a daily basis with no timetable on his return
Feel free to commence panicking, folks.
It was fun to watch Ryan Ellis take his NHL bow last night, but Weber is one of the top players in the league, and an even greater burden will be placed upon Ryan Suter's shoulders to soak up ice time until the captain can return. Last night, he was joined by Roman Josi on the top pair, backed up by Francis Bouillon/Jonathon Blum and Jack Hillen/Ryan Ellis. We're still waiting to see if Kevin Klein can return to the lineup as well.
How many guys does this make this season who the Preds have lost due to hard hits/concussions? Roman Josi missed the start of the season, Martin Erat took a head shot at Columbus, Mike Fisher got caught by Anaheim's Francois Beachemin, David Legwand got knocked silly by L.A.'s Dustin Brown... the list goes on and on.
Here's video of the hit which came late in last Friday's loss at Dallas. Mark Fistric wasn't penalized on the play, nor did he receive any supplementary discipline from the NHL.
Of course, the real frustration here is something we should be used to now - we don't know when we can expect Weber to be ready to play again. Concussions are still murky territory, and as much as we'd like to know what the timeline might be, there just isn't one, as stated by Kevin Wilson above.

Perhaps he relied upon my old beer-league trick; fall down while committing a penalty, and the refs assume it wasn’t on purpose and let it slide.

And Fistric has a history of leaving his feet/skates on shots like that. DISGUSTING!
I’m so pissed about this. That hit could change Webers career and our season(s) for the worst. It happened with less that 2 minutes left with a 3 goal lead for Dallas so it’s an obvious retaliation cheapshot. And not a damn word from the league about it????
IMHO, the league can’t look at every minute of every game, unless they have a much larger staff in the Disciplinary Dept than I’m aware of. The Preds should have been the ones to raise the flag on this one and they failed to do so. This is on the Preds organization more than the league as far as I’m concerned. Had anyone said even the slightest little thing about it I’m sure it would have been reviewed.
Trotz said that the organization sent in the video of the Fistric hit to the league— as per Josh Cooper. Also Trotz per Josh Cooper: Trotz: "The camera wasn’t really conclusive in terms of Fistric leaving his feet, all the other factors that go into it.
I find it really hard to believe that the only view of that hit was the one view we saw. Someone’s sandbagging some video.
there's another angle on the video announcement on NHL.com
the other angle makes it look to me like Fistric went for the upper body/ head. He crouches down on his way in then explodes upward when nearing contact.

You know I saw this hit while watching the game, and I was worried the way Shea skated back to the bench, too bad that part isn’t on the video, but mainly I was worried because Weber almost always retaliates. You hit him wrong and he is going to mess you or someone on your team up next chance he gets. Then I thought I saw Weber back on the ice before the end of the game and thought the Preds dodged a bullet. Apparently not.
Well at least his injury situation is clear.
I hope it isn’t too long. Kris Letang (I personally consider Shea’s equal as far as a scoring defenseman) has yet to return from his hit by Pacioretty on 26 Nov. He is still dealing with concussion syndrome issues. Hopefully, Shea’s isn’t that serious. I know the team has test that he will have to pass before he is allowed to get back on the ice. On a sidenote totally irrelevant… My defense corp is depleted on my fantasy team… I have both Weber and Letang.
What country you from?, WHAT?, What ain't no country I ever heard of? Do they speak English in WHAT? WH-WHAT? English Mother#$@#@#, do they speak it!? YES!! Then you know what I"m saying?!
Concussions can creep up on you well after a head hit...That's why they're so nasty
Hope this isn’t long term for Weber and the Preds sake. We’ve GOT to shore up our D with a seasoned veteran now regardless of when he comes back. Our PK% is sliding badly and we’ve got no depth at D. Last season it was the Center position. What Cripsy said last night about DP looking to make some moves after the trading freeze and SOB coming back…..the rumors will fly. Let em, cuz I want SOB back….NOW!
It was Mark Howard saying that he talked to Poile and that Poile would “peruse the market” for a defender, preferably a physical d-man … then Howard said “if you took a poll among the guys in the dressing room they’d probably like to have Shane O’Brien back. Don’t know if that’s doable” Crispy doesn’t chip in until after that when he says he’d like to have SOB back.
I’d much rather see us get Gleason or Beauchemin … a physical vet presence without the tendency to brainfart like SOB.
SOB turned it around by the end of the playoffs, though. Barry told him to stop taking stupid penalties, and if I remember correctly, he stopped.

Ellis will turn heads
Was hoping Ellis would get a chance to play and learn more from Webber, hopefully that will happen shortly. I’ve seen Ellis play since he was a kid and watched his entire Junior career. This kid will make believers out of you. He’s a PP genius and will only compliment the powerful Preds PP, not hurt it. Made good things happen in ins first game ever, only will get better from here.
Cue Dumb and Dumber
so you’re saying there’s a chance…

The Jan 5th game vs Dallas in Smashville just took WAY more meaning
McGratten WILL NOT be scratched you can bet on it. I see a fightfest coming. Going back over the game clips, Fistric was taking cheaps shot all game long against Horny. How can the league look at that clip and NOT see him leaving his feet and elbowing Weber in the head. UNREAL!
I say forget going for the win, recall Stortini, and air the game on HBO as a fight night!
I can’t believe Tootoo didn’t go straight after Fistric. Clean hit or not, he just leveled your captain, you have to respond!

I was hoping for a return of Sortini too,...
But NHL.com has him on the oilers roster now, I think. Bummer.

Most players hit upwards and drive with the legs … Toots does it, Weber does it, Cube does it. Or is it only bad when its done to our players but commendable when our guy does it?
Shea gets into a vulnerable body position as he pinches and tries to get around Nystrom …. ends up looking back with his head below Fistric’s shoulder level (Shea is 2" taller than Fistric). Fistric reads the puck coming around the boards and comes across to make a hit. Shea’s head down results in the high impact with Fistric’s shoulder. At the time of impact, Fistric’s elbow is at his side.
Notice that nobody on the ice, including Weber, reacts like this is a dirty hit. Not a single commentator or blogger complains about it until almost three days later. It’s a routine play with a bad outcome for us.

After watching the NHL.com video at http://www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=5093 , I am not as bothered by this hit. I am upset that Shea is hurt, but that looked like a hockey play. It is the cheap stuff like Columbus’ hit on Hornqvist a couple weeks ago that needs the league’s attention. Unfortunately, it seems like the league gives a pass on anything that happens after the whistle.
We’re so busy trying to assign blame that we overlook the fact that this is a high speed, physical game where even legal plays can result in injuries. From the nhl.com video, Shea’s head is barely above board height at the time of impact .. is on a knee during the contact. Unfortunate but not the headhunt some are claiming.
so it’s ok then to elbow someone in the head because of they have a knee down? fistric saw weber was in a vulnerable position as he had just fought through a check and he took adavantage of the situation. i don’t want to see hockey turned sissy, but that hit was intentionally directed towards another player’s head, regardless of where that player was at the time. fistric knows exactly what he is doing there. he’s thinking, “here’s my chance.” doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a dirty player either, just that he knew what he was doing.
Fistric’s elbow is next to his side at impact as visible in both angles. It comes up AFTER impact.
Full speed there was no chance to change from the path he committed too … we’re talking less than half a second at full speed from the time Weber comes around Nystrom until contact with Fistric. A terrible outcome from a play that wasn’t dirty. If Weber doesn’t get held up for a fraction of a second coming around Nystrom or if he keeps his balance, we’re not having this discussion. Instead we have a couple of things come together in what is literally a blink of an eye and the outcome changes from a nothing play to an injury.
No way. I just watched that first angle 3 times in a row, and Fistric’s elbow is up before the impact. You can see his elbow hit Weber before Fistric falls down. Plus, it almost looks like Fistric skated over with his elbow out at an angle, like he’s about to do the chicken dance or something.

Aaand just watched angle 2 in slow motion (just click pause over and over really fast). He leads with the elbow.
Try watching them both that way (in slow-mo by clicking pause really fast). I think you’ll change your mind.

.03x speed in VLC shows elbow down .. comes up after contact. Separated from his body at impact, but still down, to his side during impact, up afterwards.
I’d love to be able to join the bandwagon and call for blood but it doesn’t fit in this case.
Fair enough. I’ll take your word for it – you have more sophisticated ways of viewing it than I do, haha.

Not sure if Fistric’s hit happaned before or after Weber took Ryder hard into the glass during the game, but the Stars may have been looking to return the favor on Weber for that hit. Looked like a good, legal check by Weber on Ryder, but Ryder was wobbly going back to the bench.
Was kinda anticipating one of our better players getting dinged up at some point. Tough getting thru a long season without it happening, especially when you play the minutes a Weber or Suter does.

his elbow connects with Shea's head, accidental or otherwise, should've been a 2 min at least
another example of NHL’s terrible officials…
I’m not going to get in to whether or not this was a legal hit. I’m not going to go back and watch it frame-by-frame. I saw it when it happened. It was a big hit.
But I’m tired of people saying things like this:
Fistric’s elbow is next to his side at impact as visible in both angles. It comes up AFTER impact.
It doesn’t ‘come up’ after impact. It follows through his head. Just like hitting a baseball, tennis ball, golf ball, throwing a football, throwing a punch etc. ad naseaum.
The key to doing all of these things well is to follow through.
So, regardless of whether of not there was a penalty called or a league review, or whether or not Weber’s head was down too far or Fistric’s arm was down when contact was made, the power through, or the follow through after the hit was what caused the disastrous results and was unnecessary and in bad form. In other words, it was a dirty move.
World Wide Weber.

~Joe Strummer
It wasn’t a dirty hit. Period. Once Weber left the morning skate all of Pred Nation went looking for someone to blame. It was a relatively normal play that turns out badly.
Funny how nobody here ever wants our guys punished for similar hits.
Slight tangent...
If a player on my team purposely threw an elbow to another player’s head, followed through with an elbow to another player’s head, or their elbow accidentally popped up into another player’s head, and gave that player a concussion, I would say they absolutely deserve any kind of punishment or suspension they got. If we’re playing by the rules that head contact (incidental or not) is still HEAD CONTACT, and that head contact of any kind deserves a suspension, then that’s what should happen. You’re not supposed to pick cases (although it inevitably happens). This is probably an unusual analogy, but due to my extensive work with little kids, I kind of approach “bad behavior” from players on my team like bad behavior from kids. You love your players and you love your kids, and sometimes a player/kid does something stupid that they don’t necessarily mean to do… but it’s still bad. Would you let your kid get away with it? Of course not. So why should the player get away with it? He screwed up, he has to deal with the consequences. And maybe it makes me sound all self-righteous or whatever, but I’m of the opinion that if you screw the pooch, you have to deal with it – whether you’re on my team or not.

It was a dirty move. Period. I, and many, thought so at the time, not on Monday. Intentional contact to the head, follow through.
There have been times on OTF where people have said hits by our guys deserve suspensions, so your last sentence is just plain wrong.
World Wide Weber.

I think I called for Tootoo to be suspended for the Miller hit right away.
Be careful about the “nobody here ever” kind of stuff, it’s just plain wrong, and only provokes confrontation.

I was also on the Tootoo suspension train after his hit on Miller. Some folks need to actually read the comments on OtF before they, well, comment on them.

I figured this is what it was.
That Shananananabanman didn’t even talk to Fistric about the hit is just stupid. So much for trying to prevent concussions.

Really, to prevent them though – GET RID OF THE BODY ARMOR. Players will not hit as hard when you can damage your shoulder/elbow in a collision.

Problem is then, what about getting hit by the puck?? That hurts like SH*T, even WITH tons of padding.

The OHL went to soft pads. That can provide about the same amount of protection against things like that, and prevent the pads being used as a weapon against player’s heads.

Now to get the sissys in the nfl to play real ball like men without the pads and you will be all set.
