Nashville Predators call up Gabriel Bourque

NASHVILLE, TN - OCTOBER 01: Tuomo Ruutu #15 of the Carolina Hurricanes skates past Gabriel Bourque #57 of the Nashville Predators at the Bridgestone Arena on October 1, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Frederick Breedon/Getty Images)

Well what do you know, there was a reason why Kevin Klein went on IR! This just came from the Preds:

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has recalled forward Gabriel Bourque (gah-BREE-ehl BOHRK) from Milwaukee (AHL). This is the Rimouski, Que., native's first career recall - he has yet to appear in an NHL game.

Bourque, 21 (9/23/90), leads the Admirals in assists (14) in 25 games this season, most recently notching three helpers in Milwaukee's 7-3 victory over Rockford on Monday night. Nashville's ninth choice, 132nd overall (fifth round), in the 2009 Entry Draft ranked third on the Admirals in goals during his rookie pro season in 2010-11, then led Milwaukee in 2011 Calder Cup Playoff goals (7) and points (13), while ranking second on the team in postseason plus/minus (+7).

The 5-10, 192-pound left wing finished off his junior career in 2010 by helping Moncton win the President's Trophy as QMJHL Champions and advance to the 2010 Memorial Cup, earning the Guy Lafleur Trophy as Playoffs MVP in the process. Bourque earned a silver medal with Canada at the 2010 World Championships, and tied a Team Canada record for points in a World Junior Championship game with seven (3g-4a) in the nation's opening-game win over Latvia.

Can Bourque provide a bit of spark from the wing? I surely wouldn't mind seeing him bump Sergei Kostitsyn down the depth chart momentarily...

Unless this is some kind if trade situation

I feel like this is putting a bandaid on our problems with offense. We need a legit goal scorer badly, and I don’t think that is going to come from Milwaukee. I’ll be the first to admit however, as fans we want Nashville to get that scorer but don’t always think about who or how. Poole can’t just pull a scorer out of his butt, and if he could I would have some very serious questions for him, mainly, why he’s kept him up there this whole time.

by Preds of State on Dec 27, 2011 7:47 PM EST reply actions

That would present a series of uncomfortable questions I’d rather not even think about, LOL!

I kinda doubt Bourque or anyone else we may call up from Milwaukee is being brought up for the purposes of showcasing them to some team who may have interest in them. More than likely we’re just trying to find lightning in a bottle again (IOW, looking for a cheap fix).

Lots of teams out there who are looking for a top 6 scorer and/or some defensive depth. The bidding for the players who made be made available in a trade will be high. Not convinced Poile is all that motivated to pay that price.

Defense keeps you in games........offense wins them!

Predators Trade Needs

The Preds ever increasing need for a goal scoring forward is quickly reaching epic proportion and Milwaukee is not the answer. As good as Weber is at both ends of the ice, he should not be the leading scorer on a team that has now played 36 games. On top of that, Suter is just 1 point away from tying Craig Smith for second on the team in scoring. That simply is not acceptable for any team looking to make the playoffs at the end of the season. I feel that the best way to deal with the inexperienced blue line is to have a much more aggressive offensive play style to keep that sustained pressure on teams in their own zone. The Preds can’t do the usual "defense first" mentality/play style with this kind of blue line because the forwards just can’t score enough to make up for it. Goals are hard to come by and it makes it even harder on the team when night in and night out the team is playing from behind a one, two, or three goal deficit. What some fail to realize is that the team has been living off of the power play for most of the season because our forwards just can’t consistently put the puck in the net at full strength. Take for example the Dallas game: The Preds only scored 3 goals that game, one was by our fourth line(Halischuk) and the other two were scored on the power play. Why the hell are we only getting goals by our third and forth lines and very rarely getting them from the top two lines? I think it largely falls on coach Trotz and the rest of the coaching staff.

Albert Einstein once quoted: "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Am I the only one who thinks this applies to the lineup that Trotz is putting out on the ice every game? He is putting the same lines that aren’t doing ANYTHING out there and yet expects them to all of a sudden start scoring goals. I still can’t stand that Trotz broke up the Wilson-Smith-Hornqvist line simply because Legwand came back from injury and Trotz can’t get it out of his head that Leggy MUST be on the top line. Sure, he leads the team in goals(10), but he misses far too many scoring chances to justify him being the Center of a top line and quite frankly has gotten them more from luck than skill this season. I don’t think he makes the team better by being there and the team has assets that simply aren’t being utilized in the correct way. Hornqvist scores his goals by screening goalies and getting rebounds, yet he is playing on a line with two guys who don’t shoot the puck very much. Meanwhile you have Smith on a line with two guys who simply can’t make the clutch plays needed to finish off goal scoring chances that he creates all too often. 33-15-27 were scoring like crazy when they were together because they all complemented each other’s skillsets so well. Hornqvist actually had with him two guys who shot the puck and created so many chances that it was almost impossible for them not to score goals. Legwand has done great with Tootoo in the past and if you move Spaling back to wing or moving Kostitsyn down, that would still be a very good third line for the team. My point is that the lines have to be changed up and should have been changed about 10 games ago but Trotz has refused to face it.

Lastly I want to give my thoughts on the teams trade needs. We all saw how crazy this city and the hockey world got when Poile made the trade to acquire Mike Fisher. It sparked so much new interest in the team and most will agree that the Preds would not have made the playoffs had they not acquired Fisher. Mike Fisher is a great player but he is not a game changing superstar forward. By Poile finding some way of getting that superstar forward that the Preds need, I feel it does so many things beyond what the Mike Fisher trade accomplished. If Poile could get a superstar forward, I have no doubt at all that Bridgestone Arena would be selling out home games, and jerseys, like crazy. That player would add the much needed scoring that could really push the Preds to the next level and would get the hockey world buzzing about the Predators, and for the right reasons. I feel that the biggest benefit that a superstar forward would do for the team going forward is keeping Weber and Suter here in Nashville. A trade would not just be for getting a goal scorer, but in a way also keeping Weber and Suter from bolting after the season. I’m willing to bet that if Poile can’t pull off a trade that greatly increases the Preds scoring, chances at getting into the playoffs, and actually advancing in the playoffs again, we will lose either Weber or Suter or both. Bottom line is that even though the cost for that player may be very high, the franchises short- and long-term future depends on making that trade happen.

To focus on one of your many points...

I think Trotz pulled the Horny Badger Willy line apart because they stopped producing after a while… not necessarily JUST because Legwand came back. Or at least that’s what I had a few people tell me after I complained about that as well. I’m not sure though. I would be interested in seeing them BACK together, now that our forward lines have calmed down a little bit (no more injuries, knock on wood). I think it would be worth throwing them together for a few shifts to see what happens. I also do like the Tootoo-Spaling-Haliscuk line, but I think it could be really beneficial to Tootoo to move him up a line or two (ha). Someone lit a fire under his butt in the last month, and it’d be interesting to see him with, say, Tits and Fisher.

Alsoooo, just as a talking point, I think it’s interesting that earlier this season everyone was condemning Trotz for shuffling the lines so much, but now that he’s picked out specific lines and is using them consistently, there’s worry expressed that he isn’t trying out new lines.

But as I was saying, let’s get, well, you know who right now then! :D

While getting a star forward is desireable, a good forward would be greatly helpful as well. The point about having the puck offensively being helpful defensively is right on the mark, as the Wings continue to prove.

This move makes little sense to me of they are trying to find ‘lightening in a bottle’ with regard to scoring. Bourque has been very slow out of the gate as far as production this year. He has 2 goals lagging quite a ways behind Mueller, Thang, Van Gilder, Latta, etc, etc, etc. No ideas as to why he gets the call-up. Then again, Ellis has looked terrible down here too yet he seemed to impress quite a few in the loss in Detroit.

by ninab on Dec 27, 2011 9:30 PM EST reply actions

Interesting about Ellis. Trotz told the guy in Milwaukee to send him his “best” defenseman to avoid pulling up guy(s) he WANTS to pull up over the guy(s) who DESERVES to come up. 17 points in 26 games seems pretty good to me, but I guess with the numbers he was putting up before Milwaukee, that seems low? How has he looked bad? Is the game too fast, or is he making bad plays, or not scoring as much as expected, or…?

by davisca on Dec 27, 2011 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

I think it is just that in Juniors….well….. think about the age groups that Ellis was playing against compared to defensemen in the AHL. The defensemen in the AHL are much more developed and thus harder to score against. Look at Sergei Kostitsyn’s junior numbers. He had 131 points in his last junior year. Personally that is no hit against Kostitsyn currently, he is really a very skilled player, and I think if he had a sniper to play with that he would be gravy. He has always been a good play maker, just needs a finisher.

Davisca-he just has been inconsistent. He makes a lot of mistakes in his own zone, gives the puck up a lot, gets run over. He is notorious here for letting the puck skip out of our offensive zone during power plays. Just has been making a lot of mistakes. Which is just fine for a rookie…he’s obviously talented. I just thought he needed a lot more seasoning at this level before going up.

While I respect Eraser's well-considered opinions

We now have trouble on defense. Pekka Rinne has looked truly awful the last three games. Is it all his fault? I think not – guys like Weber and Suter have had poor plus/minuses during the past few games. Kostytsin has not been impressive either so I look forward to seeing how Sergei looks in a suit and tie for a couple of games – let’s see what Bourque can do. If we are going to make a trade let’s not look for a one-way offensive player.

Yeah, most of the goals from last night were due to forwards making bad turn-overs, not covering of opposing players, letting people skate right through the zone, etc. We GOTTA have someone who can produce offensively, but also get back and play well defensively.

“Bourque, 21 (9/23/90), leads the Admirals in assists” Oh good- another passer. If this doesn’t fix our offensive problems, then maybe one or two more guys who are good at passing should definitely do it.

You can’t get rid of those players who were responsible for getting you to the playoffs and then hope the grasshoppers fill in the void. It’s just not going to happen, no matter how many lines are shuffled or if no lines are shuffled. We got rid of our playmakers and didn’t replace them with any. The ONLY one who comes close is Smith. So unless we get some vets who know what to do and when to do it, we will continue in the present vein and it won’t be pretty.

Rinne has been letting in some soft goals lately. I really have to blink sometimes to see if its the same 6-5 Finnish Machine that I had the pleasure of watching make amazing save after amazing save. Not really sure what’s going on with Pekka recently, but before this season I thought he would run away with the Vezina this year (no disrespect to Thomas, but he is getting old).

I don’t really know what to expect from Pekka nowadays, heck, all of the traits that used to be a given are gone now. Pekka being Pekka, great defense, great PK, good 5-on-5 play, terrible PP. I don’t even know what team I’m watching anymore…

I am willing to give him a pass right now since there has been so many night that he has saved our bacon. Some nights he is the only one giving his all. I am not really too worried, usually he gets better as the season goes on. However we do need somebody pushing those forwards away from in front of the net, and I think davisca stated the other day that most of the goals in the Detroit game were primarily our forwards’ faults. That first goal made me so mad, Legwand was being so lazy. You think that if you got stripped of the puck that you would hurry back to make up for it.

What will Poile do? Sadly, I think it will take the team going into a tailspin before he even attempts to make any moves. He’s got lots of picks and prospects he could dangle out there (the rights to Rads as well), so he certainly has assests to use to get something done. Whether the will to do so is there on his part is less than convincing.

I think we are freaking out a little much again. Klein makes a bigger difference than many want to admit. Everyone notices when he makes a mistake, but few give him credit when he blocks several shots in a game or when he makes a good defensive play. The defense is incredibly young right now. Surprisingly the offense has been pretty good lately. It would be nice if Rinne could get back to form and steal a bunch of games.

I hate to wonder if the increase in the preds scoring is related to the increase in opposition scoring.

We’ve scored one goal each in 3 of our last 5 games (2-1 win over the Blues was in a shootout), 2 goals or less in 5 of our past 10 games. It’s only the ever giving kindness of the Boo Jackets that makes those GPG numbers of late look respectable.

The Preds are middle of the league in goals scored. Compared to other years this is an improvement. Problem is they are also near the middle of the league in goals allowed. I seem to remember the Preds being near the top (or bottom depending on how you look at it) in goals allowed. I remember the win pct. being unbelievable last year if the Preds scored 3 goals in a game. Doesn’t seem like 3 will do it most nights this season, at least lately.

Maybe we chalk this up as the “rebuilding” year and let our young defense come into form. Josi and Ellis obviously have talent but they aren’t ready to replace Weber or Suter. A year of playing time will get them a whole lot closer. But, we need the scoring wing man. We gave up SOB, Franson, and Lombardi for nothing in offense.

A “rebuilding” year is exactly what would cause Weber and Suter to bolt. They are two of the best defenceman in the world and are in their prime, they wont stay here if the team “rebuilds”. They want to be on a team that can win the Stanley Cup and what the Predators are/have been missing is a goal scorer. The last word that Webs and Suter want to hear is rebuild.

Rebuilding year?

We are sitting in a playoff spot if the season ends today. This is the kind of stuff that is entertaining/frustrating when reading message boards. Go on a 2 game losing streak, it is a rebuilding year, go on a 3 game winning streak this is the best team ever.

Point taken everyone seems on edge about this team right niw myself included

Not only that BUT

We let Sully, Goc, Ward, bought out Dumont, SOB, Franson and Lombardi walk or go for Lebda which did not play one game in Nashville. Then we sign Bergfors which is now gone, only Hillan has much ice time of the off season moves. Poile off season was no where near his best ever, in fact probably his worst ever. Not sure if he had his hands tied by the owners to sign the big three or what but all we have heard out of Cigarran the last year is that the team is going to spend more and compete for a Stanley Cup. Right now we are not even close and with this call up all we did is make a young team younger.

I'd bet cold hard cash that Bourque doesn't stay around for long.

I don’t know much about him, and I’m sure he’s good, but I bet he gets sent back down eventually. We have to stay at the bottom of the salary cap!!

Anyway, vague joking aside, there’s something Cigarran that I kinda trust… I haven’t the slightest idea why, but it just feels solid. (Yes, this is only sort of unrelated to the above comment, but whatever). Maybe it’s the fact that not many people would openly declare, “I HAVE AND WILL SPEND THE MONEY YOU SO DESPERATELY WANT/NEED!!!” and then not do anything about it. I’m sure he’s willing to do it. I think the problem is finding the appropriate match for a trade in Nashville. I think it’s slightly more complicated than it appears (and those of you who are better versed in trading/salary/etc. stuff than I can probably back me up and/or correct me where I’m wrong). Here’s what I think makes it so complicated. We need (1) someone who is going to fit in with the team, the team attitude, and the style of play – The Predator Way; (2) someone who will show Suter and Weber that the Preds really ARE pushing to compete – i.e., they have proven themselves talented and capable of producing; (3) someone who isn’t too expensive and will fit under the salary cap if/when Suter/Weber are signed – this is where someone should probably help me out, but from what I barely know about all this, I don’t think there’s going to be a ton of cap room if we sign S/W for what the expected numbers seem to be… I feel like that alone makes this a kinda narrow choice. It’s like when you click on all the different options when you’re searching for stuff on Amazon to narrow your selection down…

Aaand I had something conclusive I was going to say at the end here, but I can’t remember what it was. Oh well.

Oh, yeah, sorry, the “and then not do anything about it” is in respect to GMDP. I forgot to put that in there… I’d bet that GMDP is willing to do it, it’s just finding the appropriate……etc.etc.etc.

Wait when did Amazon start selling hockey players?! DAMN IT nobody tells me anything like this when i got hired. Maybe my 10% employee discount can help lol.

I do think we will make a move to get both of them resigned. Pekka signing for 7 years 7 mil per was a huge splash and should we make a trade (starting to eye Tits right now because he seems to be lacking production) I think it will end up being one that will help for a while. The SOB angel is great and yes we DESPERATELY need someone like him to help out but we also could use a shooter. If we can get both at the same time great if not we will have to settle for one. Right now the biggest need is on D with Weber out for some period of time. The O has been good its just the lack of D that is giving up all those goals and we cant play the Jackets for the rest of the season (trust me I wish we could too).

I feel that offense is the real need for this team. Getting a big goal scoring forward would greatly benefit this team more than getting a second pairing, more experienced defenceman. The best way to deal with the inexperienced blueline is to start playing a much more aggressive playstyle that pushes the play to keep the puck in the oppenents zone more than our own. The offense has been downright awful and the biggest reason that the Preds have been winning games is that the power play is clicking. However, there is the fact that a forward will cost more than a decent defenseman. SOB would probably cost a fraction of what a Bobby Ryan or any other superstar forward would but I feel that getting a player like SOB isnt the solution to a continuing problem with scoring and certainly not a show of commitment to Weber and Suter that this team is playoff bound.

I took a look at the standings on this date last year...

The Preds were in 10th in the conference. Same amount of points, 1 less win. 9 fewer goals scored, 12 fewer goals allowed. I still think Poile will make a move, there are just not that many sellers at this point. As we get closer to the deadline a move will be made. I do not expect it to be a supertstar though. I predict he moves a forward and some picks. The Preds don’t have the amazing depth at D that we all expected to be used for a trade. They are all playing in the NHL at this point.

Fair enough points to make, but I’d argue that our schedule thru 36 games last season was a bit tougher than it has been so far this season. Our GPG average is .04 higher than where we ended up last season, so I’d say it’s still an issue for us.

Still an issue...

Yes, but I think the goals allowed is just as big of an issue. I kind of have the feeling that Poile is counting on a 2nd half run. I also think that there will be a trade probably early February. Poile was on the Game the other night and said that there aren’t really many trading partners right now. I agree with you that the trade will come out of the stockpile of picks that Poile has collected. We will see and it will be fun to watch the message boards while it all unfolds.

Well, I could have told Poile there wouldn’t be many trading partners in December back during the summer. There rarely ever are.

As I’ve said before, I’ll believe Poile will make a trade when I see it. As long as Rinne pulls our butts out of the fire, like he did again tonight against the Wild, Poile will be content.

He’ll make a deadline trade…he always does. But will it be the big trade or just another Fisher-like trade?

I hear Dustin Boyd is available, LOL!

Another Fisher type player would be a big deal as far as the way Poile moves.
