Thursday's notes: Hockey weather hitting Nashville?
Now this is hockey weather, right? Frost on the ground, a chill in the air... Now if only things could get cold enough, for long enough, to freeze some ponds around here, we'd be set.
But until that time comes, you'll have to read through your morning hockey notes to get into that wintry frame of mind...

OK...after reading Cooper's article...
Why does Tootoo have to sit for tonights game and Saturday…why didn’t his suspension start with the Phoenix game? He didn’t play that game so I assumed he would be back on Saturday against Anaheim. If not, then I will be super pissed since this BS from Shanahan may have cost us the services of Tootoo for 3 games instead of 2.
Any help?

I think that’s just an error in the article. 2 games should be Phoenix and Columbus and back on Saturday.

I think you are right. It would be a shame if Toots can’t be out there to get under Getzlaf’s girdle though. :)

As a Preds fan and OTF’er
I agreed with Dirk and GMDP that the realignment pretty much rocks. It seems like the majority of us on OTF who like it see the basic positives to realignment as:
- Maintained divisional rivalries.
- Eliminated exactly half of those late night start times.
- Guaranteed home and away against every team and star player in the league.
The more debatable stuff (that I still personally see as positive):
- Increased rivalries with more games against conference opponents.
- Increased rivalries in first 2 rounds of playoffs as the likely hood of meeting the same team has increased by roughly 50%.
- Increased intensity in the waning days of the regular season effectively doubles by having 4 playoff "bubbles" instead of two.
- Adding a geographically close rival in Dallas.
- Adding a Canadian rival in the Jets (lots of exposure in Canada since they do not have a Canadian rival in the conference).
- Travel for the league is more balanced, which should, in theory, help the competitive and operational balance across the board.
Obviously, this is all a matter of opinion. So, what are the perceived negatives with the realignment from the Preds perspective? Losing 2 games each with our recent playoff rivals in Vancouver and Anaheim?
Negatives?
If we keep playing the way we are right now, there is no chance that we make the playoffs in that format…It’s possible in our new aligned division with the number of strong teams that one or two will have a better record than some of the other Western division teams. That’s the only one that screams out to me.
I, for one, am a little nervous now that Dallas and Minnesota are starting to gain momentum, that is definitely gonna make it tough for the Preds to get in the top 4.

If we keep playing like this we won’t make the playoffs in the current format. :)
MVW feels the same and I get it as it relates to the current standings but, I also think that balances out some over the course of time as the strength of each club fluctuates.
As far as the 7 vs 8 team conferences, I am hoping that between Quebec City, Seattle, Houston, KC, etc… that there will be a two team expansion in the coming years. Seems logical given the growth of the revenues since the lockout.

I’ve also heard rumours that making the former Eastern Conference the 2 new 7 team conferences was a little bone the league threw them to get them to agree to this realignment. I think it will eventually even out as teams relocate or the league expands.
It’s just a little scary to look at the Preds’ new conference right now as Minnesota, Dallas and St. Louis are on an upswing and Chigago and Detroit never seem to fall too far.
I know management like the guaranteed sellout everytime we play Detroit, but I’d kinda like to see them go East.
by Melissa Vanderpool Wallace on Dec 8, 2011 11:49 AM EST up reply actions
I think there’s stuff in there for most teams and that’s particularly true for “Western” teams like Detroit, Columbus, and Dallas. I happen to believe that the two teams in Florida face a disproportionate burden, but it’s not an unmanageable one if the schedule is done properly.
The only “negative” I see from the Preds point of view is that it’s structurally harder to get a playoff spot in an 8-team conference than a 7-team conference, no matter whether those 8-team conferences are in the “West” or in the “East.” I have a sense that that was put in place to make it possible to respond to changes like potential relocation or expansion/contraction, so that it’s an aspect of the plan that’s intended to make long-term sense not short-term sense.
R.I.P. Belak, Rypien, Boogaard, Lokomotiv.
I think you are right on with the 8 vs 7 conference. We shall see.
Hard to argue with math though. Chance of Preds making the playoffs:
Before – 53%
After – 50%
…and that’s in a vacuum, obviously…

I think the Predators got one of the best outcomes of any team with this realignment.
The only major downside I see, is it looks like it will be slightly more diffucult to get into and advance in the playoffs. We have a 4 in 8 chance while some teams have a 4 in 7 chance and it would be possible for a teamin a tough conference to miss the playoffs while a team with fewer points in a less evenly matched conference might make it.

On a different subject, has anyone heard anything new on Suter’s contract negotiations?

Nothing yet…I thought his agent and DP were supposed to meet in November.

That’s what was being said. The way they were talking it sounded like something might be reached before now. It’s all been pretty quiet since then. Sure would be a nice Christmas gift to see him signed long term!

Todd Cordell via twitter: Predators defenseman Ryan Suter’s agent Neil Seehy told Cordell that "Ryan likes it very much in Nashville" and that they will continue to work towards a contract extension.

Hmmm...
Sounds identical to the BS spouted by Weber and his agent last year…I is skeptical
by HardCorePredFan316 on Dec 8, 2011 12:40 PM EST up reply actions
I hope they get it done. Several sites keep saying he’s likely trade bait and I’d hate to see him go somewhere else. We need Sutes and Weber signed!!
by crowe1113 on Dec 8, 2011 1:29 PM EST via mobile reply actions
That’s a good point about the Wild. I’d hate to see either one leave, but both would be awful. I love Weber, but for some reason I just think Suter makes him better than the other way around. I know I’d hate to have to be the one to decide who to keep and who to let go if it comes to that.

On realignment I'll say it again...on the PO format it SUCKS again
The BOG did good on realignment except the Wings and Jackets STILL belong in the EST and I don’t know what else you can do for the Florida teams. I don’t know why anybody is a fan of the divisional playoffs. It’s the worst case scenario for the Preds to have to go through caps teams Detroit AND Chicago EVERY year. And that’s what it’ll be. I don’t need anymore reason to hate those teams and the thought of 1,000’s of their fans in our barn in the PO’s every year sucks. Divisonal PO’s only existed for 11 years from 82 to 93 and the Stanley Cup PO’s was the LEAST competitive in all of the NHL history with only 3 of 11 years. The rest were sweeps or 4-1 series because the best teams were facing each other too early. The playoffs have never been more exciting than they are now and to mess with that is a head scratcher. So what about travel in the PO’s. If you can’t stay up at night for a few nights then too bad. I don’t hear NBA fans whining about late games in the PO’s. Just wait till the Preds get bumped out early with a better record and all that gate revenue lost and fans will be screaming for a change to points seedings. The best PO format would be the top 2 in each Conf then teams with the most points after and reseed after every round. That’s only fair. Otherwise we’ll see the best 2 teams meeting in the second round and more sweeps or 4-1 Stanley Cup series. Don’t mark my word, look at past history.
