Peter Forsberg returns, will likely play in Nashville Saturday: Monday's notes
After weeks of speculation, and a few practices with the Colorado Avalanche, Peter Forsberg has signed a contract to rejoin the Avs, and according to the Denver Post this morning, it looks like he'll make his NHL return either Friday night at Columbus, or Saturday night here in Nashville. At age 37, with a host of injury concerns over the years, can he still help the Avs? This hardly looks like a team which needs offensive help, as their defense ranks 14th in the Western Conference.

two things
- As much as I’d love to see Geoffrion in Nashville in the near future, its a little preposterous to think he’ll be up at all this season. Good kid, hard worker, but is in line behind Mueller, Halischuk, Thuresson, and Begin when healthy. Geoffrion’s a bottom six type guy in the NHL and we have too many of them when everyone’s healthy.
- How does Phil Kessel get away with “not talking” to Ron Wilson? That’s disgraceful.
"[Weber] shoots like MacInnis, hits like Stevens." - Jeff Marek
I don’t agree about Geoffrion. I think we can see him this year, thought it may be for a short time a la Klasen.
Reasons?
I think if he keeps playing this way, he’ll definitely move up above Begin and Thuresson on the call-up chary. I think he’s above Begin already, personally.
He’s a CENTER, what we keep losing. And he has scoring talent. Two things we can use down here big time. He can work to be a second-scoring line guy, but it will take time.
Except...
Until the recent 5 game tear, he hadn’t done anything this year.
In his first 32 games, he had 4 goals and 12 assists.
Section303.com
Right, I said if he keeps playing this way. Need a bigger sample than 5 games. A free agent center will be better, but #5 may be the best option.
time
i’ve read a few articles that talk about how at every level Geoffrion has need time to get comfortable and then start producing. Because of this i doubt that he gets called up this late in the year. There just isn’t the time needed to allow him to acclimate to the NHL level. I’d be willing to be that they do everything possible to keep him in the AHL for the rest of the season to continue to grow in skill and confidence, and then give him a shot out of training camp next season.
Forsberg
Doesn’t he have to clear waivers a la Svatos and Nabokov?
Not to say he’d be signed anywhere else, but what are the rules around that?
no
The way I understand it (and Dirk or Seth can probably clear this up further), since Forsberg was not signed with a European team at the beginning of this season, he does not have to clear waivers coming back over.

That picture of Forsberg
Will haunt my dreams. Seriously, he looks like the bad guy from an old German folktale, probably one involving the tricking and eating of children.

Forsberg is suffering from......
Brett Favre itis!! He needs to retire while we still think of him as great. Hopefully with this latest attempt he won’t be like Jordan with the Washington Wizards. A shell of what he used to be.
Still sorry?
Anybody here still grieving over GMDP’s failed bid for Phil Kessel a couple of years ago? He’s a fantastic scorer but he sure does carry along a lot of baggage.
by Hockey Hillbilly on Feb 7, 2011 11:02 AM EST reply actions
honestly
I’m not even convinced he’s a fantastic scorer. At all.

He can score, he just can't do much else
Remember, he’s playing with pretty much the worst collection of forwards in the NHL.

Not grieving, but I still wouldn’t mind seeing him in Pred colors…
At least Coach Trotz would talk to him, and he wouldn’t have every move scrutinized by the press…
I’d take him as next year’s SK74
You're welcome...

I really hate Sean Avery but he gets respect for this:
bq. “If there’s a kid in Canada or wherever, who is playing and really loves the game and wants to keep playing but he’s worried about coming out, I’d tell him to pick up the phone and call [NHLPA executive director] Donald Fehr and tell him to book me a [plane] ticket,” he told the Toronto Sun. “I’ll stand beside him in the dressing room while he tells his teammates he is gay. Maybe if Sean Avery is there, they would have less of a problem with it.”

Loved Sean Avery before this...
…love him more after this. He’s an absolute nut, pain in the ass, troublemaker… but he LOVES to play hockey and he works hard as hell in most games.
EASports' NHL 11 doesn't suck; in fact, it's really damn good! Wait, what!?
Go Predators!!!
Here's what I love......
Watching Avery get the pulp beat out of him…..something that happens quite often, LOL!
Not to get into a big debate on the topic at hand here, but I would hope those who advocate for tolerence on this issue would also be tolerent of those who hold to traditional values as well and not use terms like “homophobia” to beat people into submission towards any particular viewpoint. Hopefully everyone can just play the game of hockey without having to turn anyone’s political/moral idealogy into question.

Yeah
Always though “homophobic” was an ignorant and underhanded description.

Forsberg
Seems like his return will at least help with Denver’s sagging attendance. Also a good veteran presence for their younger guys.
