Preds Going Nowhere Fast

Team not taking advantage of home games.  The good news is, they are still 4th in the West.  The bad news is...........

Star-divide

-they are 3 points away from 9th.

-they have lost 5 out of their last 6.

-11 goals in the last 6 games, Predators hockey.

-all the good work against the Red Wings was more than negated by a home loss to the worst team in the NHL.

-the pp was 0 for 5 against the worst pk in the league.

-0 goals on 37 shots against a back-up goalie, his first NHL shutout.  Imagine that.

-Ryan Jones scored his 12th goal in his 52nd game this season.  In 87 games with the Predators his total was 14.  Sound familiar?  Can you say Rich Peverley (13 goals)?  Or Mike Santorelli (14 goals)?  Wonder why that is?

-Martin Erat is stealing--STEALING--$5 million from the Predators this season.  The best figure skater in the NHL.

So now it's on to Detroit, where the Predators are likely to fall further behind in the division race.  But, you say, they won there earlier this season.  Yeah, only the 10th time in franchise history.  What is it they say about lightning striking twice?  Hope I'm wrong.  Bet I'm not.

Why be a fan if you’re going to have this kind of attitude?

by Predneck on Feb 8, 2011 10:45 AM EST reply actions

Are you saying I should

suspend belief? Pretend they’re great? If that works for you, fine. But I’m a season ticket holder and I watch every game. There’s no excuse for crap like last night. If I were a casual fan I wouldn’t have near the money nor time invested and I wouldn’t give a rat’s rear. I expect this franchise to do what it takes to be a serious contender for the Stanley Cup, and I’m tired of hearing about limited resources. If the current ownership doesn’t have the means to that end it should sell to an entity that does. I ain’t getting any younger.

The truth is neither libelous nor slanderous.

I’m saying its an 82 game season for a reason. You’re going to lose some games to some really bad teams. Period. Being completely negative (which you have a strong tendency to do based on what I’ve seen from you on this blog) isn’t really what I call being a fan. Yes, last nights game really pissed me off. I hate to see that kind of game. But you know what? It equals about 1.2195% of the schedule. That’s it. And as for the ownership, after everything they’ve done just to keep a team on the ice in Nashville, its pretty laughable that you still blame them.

Hey, the boys got 37 shots on goal. I figured at least THAT would make you happy.

by Predneck on Feb 8, 2011 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

It’s one thing to lose a game to a bad team and play competitively. Monday night’s game was not that way.

37 shots is a step in the right direction. 5 shots on 5 power plays against the worst penalty kill is not. And the defense……..

In regard to ownership/management, hooray for keeping the team here. If that’s enough to satisfy you, good for you. But for me, with plenty of cap room, they need to do more than give lip service to winning the cup. And by the way, the game was a reminder that the club has jettisoned three fairly promising forwards in recent years because they didn’t fit the “system”. We’ve all seen in the last few months what happened to the other pro team in town when a coach was too rigidly stubborn in his ways. That falls under the oversight of management too.

The truth is neither libelous nor slanderous.

I ain’t getting any younger.

You may be Mr. Negative (or realistic, as you like to point out), but you still crack me up. Although, I’m leaning to the realistic side at this point, when we drop these Feb. gimme games, the outlook does not bode well for us Preds fans. Where I tend to hold a different viewpoint is that money is going to solve this issue. I saw a sport science episode once that featured a sumo wrestler in net and Boogard shooting pucks past him into the corners with ease. We have guys that are on orders of magnitude more talented than Boogard (and one who isn’t), this team needs something else. I’ve always thought that one man from each line ought to be taken aside and “convinced” to spend about 2 extra hours a day firing pucks on net at different speeds from different locations a la Michael Jordan. They won’t become Sidney Crosby’s, but I can’t imagine they wouldn’t at least improve our GFA +.5 as a whole.

Thoughts?

EASports' NHL 11 doesn't suck; in fact, it's really damn good! Wait, what!?
Go Predators!!!

Your point is well taken

I think one man from each line should be designated to be at the net—works for the Wings. If what you suggest works I’m all for it. But talent is not just physical, it’s knowing what to do and when to do it. Hockey 101= shoot the puck and go to the net. Really, with a few exceptions, does it appear to you that we have a group that adheres to that school of thought, rather than running the four corners? Or figure skating? Or passing up shots to make the pass to no one? Someone’s not coaching these guys up, or they came to us with a pass first mentality, or they’re just too indecisive. Erat is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. Against Detroit he was in the slot, got the puck, and bam! it was in the net. Hooray!! What does he usually do? Skates in circles with the puck until he loses it. Remember Game 5? Indecision. Boo! The point I’m making is that we have seen flashes of NHL scoring talent from some of these guys, but not enough. We need some forwards who know what to do with the puck in the offensive zone and are not afraid to fail. Whether it takes money for new players, or a coaching change, or a shift in philosophy from the current staff, or anything else I haven’t thought of, I just don’t know. But I’m a firm believer that good defense doesn’t win games or titles, it only give you a chance to win. Most playoff teams have good defenses, but they can score too. Are we one of those teams? Not yet. Who effects change? Management.

The truth is neither libelous nor slanderous.

Wow Mr. Sunshine

I guess I will cancel my flight to Detroit tomorrow, what is the use in going to the game, when we are toast. C’mon Man! While your facts are correct, here are some you forgot. We are only 7 points out of 2nd. We have twice as many home games as away games the remainder of the season. We have given up the 2nd least goals in the West (Predators Hockey). Yes, last night was painful. I don’t think I smiled after the first 10 minutes, but it is NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. We need to be at 75 points by the end of Feb, 90, by the end of March and 95 at the end of the season to make the playoffs and we are tracking right on it. Relax

95 was good for 8th last year. If you are satisfied with getting in as an 8th seed and getting bounced in the 1st round AGAIN then good for you. I want better, and losing at home to bottom feeders this time of year is not the way to get there. And by the way, the home record is not that great, and the caliber of the teams still to visit does not bode well for a team spiraling downward.

Enjoy the game.

This is This Year

According to Sports Club Stats, the most common place that 95 would get you this year is 6th. Based on today’s standing that would put us versus Dallas in the first round….sign me up now.

by Retired #7 on Feb 8, 2011 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Based on today's standings

we would play the Sharks. Ugh!

All of this is strictly conjecture anyway.

Last night

was very embarrassing. I can’t imagine how the team felt in the locker room after that gawd awful game. But this year, seems like they have more of those games this season where they lose to teams that are low in the standings (Leafs, Blue Jackets, Wild) where we as fans think they should win. It happens. And I’m not pretending, but I think this team has more resiliency than previous years. It most certainly has a better captain this year. I’m not going to say that they’re going nowhere fast – yes, they have issues that need to be worked on, but what team doesn’t?

by XVIII on Feb 8, 2011 3:11 PM EST reply actions

The boys are good, but not quite good enough, and until we pay for better players, we will have to put up with players who aren’t of a mind set to play at a high level consistently. Average players never have that mind set. That’s why they’re average!

Why bother

Posting or going to games. You are negative and wrong. Nobody likes to lose and I can’t find an excuse for the Edmonton game except that in Pro Sports anybody can win any day. That is why they play the games. For my part I will continue to believe in the team and organization. I suggest you follow the wings like the rest of those people that invade our arena every now and then.
