Talkin' Predators vs. Ducks with Anaheim Calling

Continuing the preview of Nashville's first-round match-up with the Anaheim Ducks, we wanted to get an Anaheim perspective on the upcoming series. The good folks over at Anaheim Calling were kind enough to answer a few questions...

1) Coming into the season, the defense was a huge concern. How have the Ducks been able to do to remedy that, and who has stepped up on the blue line?

Star-divide

Arthur: They basically remedied it by bringing in Francois Beauchemin. Andreas Lilja was a good Band Aid for a while, but Beauchemin knows how to run Carlyle's system, knows how to be offensively productive in the system, so the amount of depth Anaheim has now comes from having Beauchemin back. Throughout the season, though, the kids really made the defense work. Cam Fowler was a mainstay on the power play, providing a much-needed shot in a crew lauded for its puck movement (read 'refusal to shoot'). And Luca Sbisa has been a physical force that you rarely expect from a second year player. Without them, this team would still be a one-pair D-corps relying on Andy Sutton and Bob Murray's dimestore filler.

2) Corey Perry finished a spectacular season with 50 goals and 48 assists, moving him to the forefront of the MVP conversation. Just how important has he been to Anaheim this season?

Arthur: If every season boils down to making the postseason, then Corey Perry has been the MVP of the Ducks, and frankly, the entire playoff race in the West. He willed this team into the playoffs.

He's been hot before, cashing every check Getzlaf wrote or being a right pest in front of the net, but he's been absolutely unstoppable of late. Line combinations and matchups have meant very little to his production. I said recently that he looks like Super Mario on a Starman power up. You can almost hear the music.

3) The goaltending situation looks to be up in the air. I know Preds fans would love to see Dan Ellis between the pipes. Who do you see getting most of the action in net?

Arthur: It looks like Preds fans will get their wish. Coach Carlyle prefers the hot hand, even in the playoffs (as he showed with Bryzgalov), and while Emery was arguably hotter, Emery was also just cleared to skate with the team Tuesday after taking shots in practice on Monday.

And Dan Ellis has been hot enough. I would be surprised if he didn't get the start for Game 1. Depending on how that goes, you could see Emery as early as Game 2. That's just conjecture, of course; Carlyle never confirms his starting netminder. Whoever plays better will get the most action, simple as that.

4) We all know about Perry/Getzlaf/Ryan/Selanne, but do you think we could see someone Nashville fans may not know much about making some noise offensively?

Arthur: I'm tempted to say that rookie Brandon McMillan will be a threat on the penalty kill, or that Matt Beleskey's shot on the top line (if he stays on the top line) will be a factor, and honestly, if speed is important against the Predators, sophomore Dan Sexton could see some ice time and make an impact. But honestly, I'd be wary of the defense.

There are a plethora of competent point shots on this defense. Luca Sbisa and Cam Fowler just don't know any better than to swing away, and Toni Lydman even pieced together a couple of goals when he first joined the corps. Add to that the fact that Francois Beauchemin and Lubomir Visnovsky could unload hollow point .45s from the blueline, and I think the offensive impact players you haven't listed may all be rear guards. Obviously, though, to get through a playoff series, you need your bottom six to light the lamp. If Ruutu and company have trouble even creating sustained pressure, Carlyle won't hesitate to swap them out for players who might.

5) What do you think the key is going to be for the Ducks to win this series?

Arthur: The heroics from Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne (especially on the power play) that brought the Ducks to the postseason will have to continue. They just will. I don't see a lot of blowouts against Pekka Rinne, so if games can stay close enough for Popeye to get to a can of spinach, then all we need is for the hero to open his mouth and chew.

Of course, to get through an entire series, those performances will have to ignite other players on the team, and the goaltending will have to keep everything going to script until then. Not the most astute analysis, but true nonetheless.

Interesting

Its seems Duck fandom (and the Ducks perhaps) may be aware of our perception of Ellis being the weak link.

I wonder if they will tighten up as a result to protect their goalie.

Regardless, if they are going to play musical goalies, that is a huge trump card in Nashville’s favour.

Emery would have been a tougher out, and somewhat more fun to watch (he is Hextallian with his slashes, loves to be in the scrum, and he’d facewash HornQ more often than Cam Fowler would…though I have read he’s calmed down a bit since his Ottawa days).

I wonder if Legwand does Twitter……..

Everyone NEEDS to read this

and then send your comments to thore@ocregister.com who is the President and Publisher at the Orange County Register.

OC Register

For the record, here is what I wrote to Mr. Horne

As someone who was born and raised in Southern California (living in Yorba Linda until the age of 30) then moved to Nashville, I was particularly offended by the article written by Jeff Miller, and I can’t believe this paper would lower itself to that level and actually publish it. How many levels of approval did this article receive before going into print?

It’s biased, it’s stereotyping and it’s just as disgusting to me as using the ‘N’ word or talking about watermelons and fried chicken when referring to African Americans. I cannot believe a paper I used to subscribe to and thoroughly enjoyed thinks that this level of stereotyping is acceptable or even humorous. It’s not.

Shame on all of you. I will be contacting your advertisers and I will also be recruiting others in Orange County and Nashville to do the same until this article is pulled and something with some value and worth is put in its place.

Are you kidding? If they’ll publish this, they’ll publish anything! I’m heading to Orange County to become a star journalist!

My column for Thursday’s Scene on Why We Should Hate Anaheim is far more sophisticated.
Also this:

Nashville, for example, has given the world many great cultural treasures, like “Hee Haw,” an old TV show that featured corny jokes, gratuitous cleavage and an animated donkey.

So, Ducks fans, let’s spend a few minutes getting to know this city a little better, while keeping in mind that Nashville also was the birthplace of Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle on “Saved by the Bell,” speaking of cultural contributions.

Opposed to the Socratic Wonder that is Anaheim, which has given us The Real Housewives of Orange County, Chuck Norris, and yes, Rebecca Black.

You could also add a note that at least the cleavage on Hee Haw was all-natural.

What’s funny is the numb skull who wrote this came off just as ignorant when speaking of Chicago, and he was trying to pay a compliment. According to him, Chi-town’s contributions to society are:

Thick pizza and cold beer.

So, obviously, this guy has not traveled too much. He is probably also under the impression that the core players of the Ducks hail from Anaheim and do not leave to their home countries at the end of the season.

Anyway, good thing we get to meet some true Anaheim fans through blogs like this. This guy is just another internet “shock jock” waiting to be discovered.

Not to pile on

But that slide show says Cracker Barrel is on e Nashville’s top employers. I find that hard to believe since CB is HQed in LEBANON. That’s sort of like saying that some company headquartered in, oh I don’t know, let’s say Anaheim is headquartered in LA.

The comments after the article by Ducks fans...

…are probably the reason that fan base is quickly becoming my favorite fan base of an opposing team. This is going to be a fun series both on and off the ice!

In contrast, does anyone remember what the Hawks fans were saying this time last year? Yeah….

I am in absolute shock.

Who the HELL approved this article? I have honestly never been so offended in my life – what complete, unabashed ignorance and disrespect. This makes me sick. Mr. Thorne will be getting an email from me.

by davisca on Apr 12, 2011 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

So sad

…that ignorance, and its correspondent prejudice, should prevail at the Orange County Register. It’s not a remotely humorous take. We’ve never turned down a well meant poke at our “image.” We do resent this sort of mean spirited attitude. Here’s an honest reaction in our local dialect: “It’s hateful.”

by Hockey Hillbilly on Apr 12, 2011 12:22 PM EDT reply actions

The funny thing is...

If you’ve ever been to a country concert in The OC you’ll see that they’re more redneck/hillbilly than we are. They dress up in country attire, boots, hats and all. You never see that in Nashville.

Oh yeah, and the Go Country 105 Chuckwagon will be out in front of the Honda Center for lunch today if anyone is interested.

I sincerely doubt it.

I’ve lived in Nashville for 15 years, and if any of those pictures were legitimately taken IN the city of Nashville, then I will eat my left foot. I mean, come on, “Hillbilly Hot Dogs”??? Yeah, that was clearly taken out in the sticks.

No big deal.......

………..I thought they were poking fun at their competition. I was not offended.

On the other hand, I’m not easily offended either.

Predaceous is smart and informed, but shouldn’t lose too much sleep over this one.

These kinda columns get written

Heck, I filed one this week. The thing is that it’s lazy “Ohhhho Nashville is full of rednecks that can’t even fill their building.”

PS – Nashville’s attendance percentage this year was higher than Anaheim’s.

There’s nothing wrong with poking the bear, I agree, but don’t phone it in.

Let 'em say what they want....

….there’s shit out there all over the place.

For example, I read in the city paper yesterday that some clown wrote that the demise of the KC Royals is ascribable to Stewart’s Ferry Apartments. Some people just write random shit like that, and as long as we have freedom of the press, its just gonna happen.

And our attendance has been magnificent.

Interesting article.

I lived there for a year when I first moved to Nashville.

Left cause of brown recluse infestation…totally unrelated, but I was shocked at the connection. I used to like Brett a lot…great player.

What's weird

Ive been a Royals fan for 25 years. Lived in Nashville for almost 30. Reported on real-estate in this town for five. I never knew until last month. The most common response to that article: “Who knew?”

The jokes were flat

but unoffensive. The bible belt dig was in poor taste.

But hey, they’re the ones paying $600,000 for a 1000sq. ft. town home. Besides, doesn’t the sign to Anahiem read as: “We have a Disney park, too!”?

An even more offensive headline

…was this number picked up from Anaheim Calling showing our power play success against Anaheim this season.

1/15 (6.67%)

I hope Trotz and the boys are picking this up. I certainly don’t want to see a recall of last year’s “poor playoff power play performance.” Say that three times fast.

Back to hockey talk.

The guy to talk to about all this is Jonathan Blum

He’s a Predator from the OC, after all. He even has a little bit of extra cred. His hometown, Rancho Santa Margarita, has the longest name of any city in California.

Do you think something bad happened to him?

I can’t help but wonder if the writer took a trip to Nashville once and got really messed up or something. Nothing he said could possibly be taken seriously so I don’t care too much but just throwing the idea out there.
