Late night Western Conference Scoreboard Watch
Kicking off at 9:30 Central time, we've got two key games to keep an eye on in the West. Feel free to jump in below and follow along!
Anaheim Ducks vs Los Angeles Kings
The winner of this game will pass the Preds in the standings, the loser will not. Simple, eh?
Phoenix Coyotes vs San Jose Sharks
If the Coyotes earn just a single point by taking this to OT, they'll pass the Preds and lock up 4th place.

Correct
If Phoenix loses in regulation, 1st tiebreaker is regulation and OT wins, we’d be tied.
2nd tiebreaker is points earned in head-to-head games, that’s a tie (2-2-0 for each team).
3rd tiebreaker is GF-GA, which Preds would win handily.

Didn’t they take shootout victories out of the equation? We have one more than Phoenix, i think. I am confused by this new crap they did.
yes, the 1st tiebreaker is the number of regulation and OT wins (not SO). They’ve added that as a column on the NHL.com standings page, so you can see it easily.
That said, it is an unfortunate extra layer of complexity they’ve added to the standings, almost as bad as when they used to list Wins, Losses, Ties, and OTL’s in the standings for a few years around the turn of the century.

Correct, shootout wins don’t count.
We have equal non-shootout wins though, so if PHX loses in regulation, it would proceed to Goal Differential, and we’d win.

Need LA, SJ, and the Wings to win to keep 5th the way I see it.. Why couldn’t the Preds make it easy on themselves? The looked flat and had no energy. Typical of a back to back games. I hate that the NHL even schedules them. There was no reason they couldn’t played this game on Sunday being the last game of the season for both teams.
Nope!
Preds got off relatively lightly, but I break all those details down every summer as soon as the NHL schedule comes out:

From what Crispy said
Buffalo asks the NHL for as many weekend games as they can get so the league schedules lots of back to back for the Sabres. If I could change 1 rule in the NHL it would be that both teams have to be coming off back to backs if it’s scheduled.
In practice, that’s really hard to do, because each team has unique issues with their buildings.

Posted this in the other thread as well
Preds get 5th if: PHX loses in REG AND
Chicago loses in REG or OT
Preds get 6th if: PHX loses in REG OR Chicago Loses in REG or OT
Preds get 7th if: PHX wins, Chicago wins
Possible opponents for each of our final standings: SJ (6th or 7th), DET (6th or 7th), LAK (5th), and ANA (5th)
Only slightly less difficult than triple integrals.
PHX = BAD
CHI = BAD
Got it, thanks.

I have this weird feeling
That this Lady Gaga show is gonna be a scheduling nightmare. Playoffs start Wed or Thurs, which puts Gm 3 on Sun or Mon. Gaga takes a looong time to load in and out and is on Tues, which would seem to eliminate a Sun Gm 3….but also makes a Monday Gm 3 tricky. Glad I don’t work in NHL scheduling

Ok lets look at it this way.
PHX wins they are 4th. LA / Ducks are 5th, we are 6th LA / Ducks loser is 7th. Chi or Dallas is 8th. does that sound correct but only if Phx wins.
If Phx loses. LA / Ducks winner is 4th, we are 5th. have I got that correct?
Chicago ties us with a win. If it’s a ROW, theyd have the tiebreaker. In a SO … I’m not sure

Just figured it out. They only way Chi does not move ahead of us is if they lose to Detroit… so we become a Wing fan for a day…..yuck!!!
Slim chance of the Wing beating the Hawks
They’re playing in Chicago and Detroit laid down like Whores last night.
Will Datsyuk be ready for the 1st round?
I’d be ok with playing Detroit minus him, even though it didn’t help much the other day.
he played friday. zetterburg is questionable for the 1st round start though.

Yes
Marleau beat us twice in OT. They have been so hot in the 2nd half. I don’t want to go anywhere near them.
The 1st game we played against them was the one where we got dominated and then all of a sudden scored 2 goals in the last three minutes to win the game. I was at that one. it was incredible.
Poll at predators.nhl.com
asks who fans think the Preds will face in round one. Overwhelming majority said PHX, which is now impossible. Least votes: Sharks. ‘Cause we don’t want that.

I think we are all Sharks fans for a night . . .
If I am reading the standings and tiebreakers correctly, if they beat the Coyotes in regulation, we DO NOT get SJ in the 1st round no matter what else happens – by winning, SJ would lock up 2nd seed, and we could fall no father than 6th – Coyotes and Ducks/Kings loser would not pass the Preds.
NOH!
We just hate PHX extra for a night.

Depends on which one you'd rather face in 1st round . . .
We MIGHT play the winner of ANA/LA (if winner is 4 seed and Preds get 5th seed), but there is NO WAY we play the loser of that match in the 1st rd.
Looks like if it goes to OT but ANA won (I know, I know, I’m whispering), they’d both be ahead of us. Right?
No
Kings would have fewer regulation & OT wins, which is the first tiebreaker. With that game, the winner will pass us, the loser won’t.

I am confused….How is a Sunday game impossible, but a Monday game is not?
Sounds like they would have to do Sunday if they can’t do monday due to show set-up for the tuesday show. Then I guess game 4 would be Wednesday?
The Sunday game is an issue only if the opponent is LA. There’s an NBA game Wednesday, so to get a Sunday Gm 3 to dodge Gaga, they’d have to go back to back Thurs/Fri in LA. Sunday here Gm 3 and, yes, probably a Wednesday 4. Weird weird weird.

It seemed there was a concensus that we wanted PHX in the first round. Since that is no longer a possibility, who does everyone want? (I think the most agreed-upon opinion is now that we don’t want the SJS…
I suppose ANA or LAK in a 4/5 matchup is best, but I’m not sure I wouldn’t feel equally okay with a matchup against DET. And I’d LOVE to be the ones to end their season.

If current scores hold up and SJ and ANA win in regulation,
then I think it gets pretty simple. If CHI wins (reg, OT, or SO) then Preds are 6th seed vs DET; if DET wins (reg, OT or SO) then Preds are 5th seed vs ANA. Am I right on this?
Now who would you rather play?
We have great records against both.

Contributor at Music City Miracles. and On The Forecheck.
by Aditya T (smashville) on Apr 10, 2011 12:31 AM EDT reply actions
Not exactly...
If the current results hold, then a CHI win tomorrow (reg/OT/SO whatever) puts us in 6th playing Detroit. A Detroit win tomorrow (reg/OT/SO whatever) puts us in 5th vs. Anaheim.
We got our wish
A San Jose regulation win. 3-1. That means Sharks are 2nd and PHX finishes below us. In fact, they may get the Sharks in the first round.
If you hurry, you can see us back in 4th place in the standings, before they move Anaheim ahead of us.
Darnit, I missed that, LOL!
Soooo, it’s the Ducks or Wings in our future it would appear. Two birds of very different feathers. Dan Ellis standing on his head back to back nights for the Ducks, wonder who they will go with to start the playoffs, Ellis or Emery?
Wings look very wounded, but they’re like that snake you think might be dead but you’re afraid to pick it up ‘cause it might still be alive. Won’t be easy with either team.

With DET locked into 3rd, do they rest up vs CHI tomorrow?
Prob gives Hawks a lot better chance to win, bummer for Stars. Makes Preds most likely scenario 6th seed vs Wings. Buckle up!
Wings have nothing to play for tomorrow, wouldn’t be surprised if the Grand Rapids Griffens suited up against the Hawks. Looking like another series against the Wings…….

if DET beats CHI tomorrow we finish 5th (vs ANA)
if CHI beats DET tomorrow we finish 6th (vs CHI)

We can still somehow play San Jose if the Blackhawks win in the shootout… Is this right?
"It's not so much that this show is bad, as it's hurting America...."
depends on NAS - CHI head to head action
by vonore-tn-fan on Apr 10, 2011 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions
It goes back to percentage of points against all teams tied with 99 pts.
So NAS drops to seventh. Therefore, first best scenario, DET wins in reg/ot; second best, CHI wins in reg/ot; worst, CHI wins in shootout and we play SJ. So now we know what to cheer for tomorrow.
"It's not so much that this show is bad, as it's hurting America...."
Confused on this.
How would we drop below LA and PHX? At this point isn’t 6th as worse at the preds can do?
Nashville earns #7 seed…
Chicago wins in a shootout — first round match-up: Nashville at San Jose
Anaheim would finish with 99 points (Anaheim would own all tie breakers), Chicago with 99 points (Chicago would have No. 2 spot in tie breaker), Phoenix with 99 points (Phoenix would have No. 3 spot in tie breaker), Nashville with 99 points (Nashville would lose all tie breakers), Los Angeles would finish with 98
So, how do we own the breaker against PHX currently, but with a CHI OT win the preds lose it? Doesnt make any sense to me?
I’m with you there…….this is making my head hurt. :(
by Grizzledbear on Apr 10, 2011 1:54 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, since there would be a three way tie in points AND ROW
we go to this crazy tiebreaker:
If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any “odd” games, shall be used to determine the standing.
So we and Phoenix are tied as far as shootout losses go, if I’m understanding all this correctly? If we had less shootout losses, I would think we would finish ahead of them regardless of what else happens. I need some Advil……
by Grizzledbear on Apr 10, 2011 2:12 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Oops, meant to say less shootout wins, not losses………not sure what I mean anymore. :/
by Grizzledbear on Apr 10, 2011 2:13 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I did the math.
Here’s how it goes:
NSH had a possible 20 pts from CHI and PHX, which they earned 8.
CHI had a possible 20 pts from NSH and PHX, which they earned 15.
PHX had a possible 16 pts from NSH and CHI, which they earned 9.
NSH 8/20 = .400
CHI 15/20 = .750
PHX 9/16 = .563
We would be in 7th having the lowest percentage.
by DonBorvio on Apr 10, 2011 2:19 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I just got done going over the math and I get it now. SO win by Hawks leaves CHI, NSH and PHX with 38 reg/OT wins, so it goes to pctg of pts vs all 3 tied teams – its a diff set of #s than head to head, explains why we win in head to head tie w/ PHX, but not in 3 way tie – so we root for anything but SO
Right, because NSH ties again in a 2-way tie with PHX on that 3rd tiebreaker, and go to the 4th tiebreaker: GF/GA differential. Which NSH wins.
And it's in Chicago.
Detroit has nothing to play for and will probably rest Howard. They know if they lose to Chicago they get us and if they win they get the rematch of last year. Looks like a clear Chicago Las Vegas book it.
Unless we think DET is a better matchup than ANA, which it might be.
"It's not so much that this show is bad, as it's hurting America...."
No - no way we can drop below 6
and SJ will play 7 seed. No way LA, DAL, or PHX move above us regardless of outcome of DET-CHI game
Uh...what?
They split 4-2 in Nashville’s favor this year.
