Thursday's notes: Bruins celebrate as Vancouver recovers, Preds add a forward?
Last night's game brought forth a wide range of reaction, from jubilation in the Boston locker room to terrifying destruction in the streets of Vancouver, as fans flipped cars, started fires, and generally disgraced one of the finest cities in North America.
Follow after the jump for all that and a whole lot more, including word that perhaps the Predators have signed another skilled European forward to bring over to North America...

Oh the humanity!
Well if the Preds woulda been winning the Cup, we would be pickin and grinin, not looting and rioting. I did hear the rioters did find the size of the panties in Victoria’s Secret that they smashed in the windows for the Sedin Sisters. Petite and Small!
I think the rioting spilled over to a parking garage here at Vandy. I showed up this morning and there were cops and fire trucks and tons of smoke

One idiot even said “We wouldn’t be doing this if we woulda won the Cup”
I was in SF when the Giants won the World Series last fall and not 1 arrest or injury. Class mang, have class. Like WTF?
Stupid Flyers
If they pour a ton of money on Bryzgalov for essentially winning… nothing, then we might as well trade Pekka at the deadline because his comparables will be through the roof.
Sad to think about, but it’s something we may have to consider doing if the price gets astronomical to keep Rinne. But with a couple 7M goalies already in this league who Pekka is at least as good as and probably better than, it could get to that point.
by Grizzledbear on Jun 16, 2011 11:35 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
This is why it upsets me when I hear that Poile is waiting on comparables to come in for Weber. Why do we constantly let other teams set the bar for our contracts? Given this team’s particular situation I think they need to be more proactive on contracts and less reactive.
Oh yeah, and stop overpaying for one year of good production.
It takes two to tango, and it’s Shea’s agent that wants to see how those comps work out.

It’s an apt word, but an ever better one is skadeglädje, which is the Swedish counterpart and particularly applies to Henrik Sedin in Tim Thomas’s crease.

Two things
One, LOL@Luongo
Two, seeing Kesler cry fills me with joy. That probably makes me a rotten person, but I’m ok with that as long as Kesler is weeping like a girl.
My wife and I...
are right there with you. He acts like a baby and whines when he plays, so crying when he loses just fits his persona.

I'm seeing the Kes-hate, and I get it, I really do, but...
…that guy played lights-out ferocious last night. He seemed to be the only Canuck who really wanted to do what it takes to win at this point in the season. Yeah, he got frustrated and got stupid at some points in the playoffs, but I have to respect a man who does what he did and what we would expect our guys to do in the same situation—play as hard as you can no matter how much it hurts and give no excuses afterwards.
PS. Luongo is a drama queen, but if he’d stop trying to be perfect he’d be way more consistent and far less of a liability.
PPS. Yay Timmy!
Goaleez R weerd.
Have to agree with you here. I’ll take a player who cares as much about winning (and losing) as Kesler does on my team anytime, especially when they can put up 40 goals like he did. Just needs some lessons in on ice manners. :)
On the flip side of that, the Sedin gals, err, I mean twins, should go on the road as a magic act the way they disappeared in the finals. They may have skill, but not much courage.

In Dallas, when the Cowboys WON the Superbowl
the fans tore up the city, so I hesitate to point fingers at the Vancouver rioters. That said, it was a stupid thing to do then and it’s a stupid thing to do now. Vancouverites are generally better than this.

Booing Bettman
Is anyone else getting as tired as I am of seeing people boo him every single time? Last night felt particularly viscious and I’m just getting flat out annoyed now. The booing is making the cup presentation more about Bettman than the team winning the cup or the Conn Smyth winner.
If the Preds ever have the Stanley Cup presented in their building, I would hope are fans show a lot more class than that.

I'm curious
If you’re a Preds fan, what reason do you have for wanting to see Bettman booed?
It has nothing to do with me being a Preds’ fan or dislike for Bettman.
Bettman is the boss, so to speak. Razzing the boss is an American (and, apparently, Canadian) tradition. People have been booing Bettman for years. Just like people booed Tagliabue and now Goodell at the NFL draft. People boo Selig (he deserves it, but that’s beside the point). The only commissioner who doesn’t get booed is Stern and that’s because if you boo him, you end up in a re-education camp.
I certainly understand why booing bothers people. “You suck” bothers people too. Chicago screaming through the national anthem bothers people, same as that “Stars” crap in the middle of the anthem they do in Dallas.
But, frankly, booing Bettman doesn’t bother me (certainly not as much as that anthem crap), but I think it’s typically good-natured. Maybe the ‘Nucks fans were being a little vicious. But maybe they weren’t. Maybe I thought they were being vicious because I want to see them as being classless. Of course, after they booed him, their city blew up into a riot, so perhaps trying to figure out their meaning or perspective is an exercise in futility.

Goodell was booed because of the lockout. I don’t remember Tagliabue every being roundly booed. Booing Bettman isn’t just booing because that’s what people do. It’s because people hate him, and I’m still trying to figure out the justification.
*Canada just got a team back, and they got it from a sunbelt city in the exact same way that they lost their teams prior.
*Revenues are up
*Ratings are good
*Good television contract has been acquired
*The sport is probably more popular now than it’s ever been
Yeah, he sucks.
Just booing is fine. These people were hateful though. You could hear it in how vociferously they were booing. And it wasn’t just that. They were throwing crap on the ice then chanting “Bettman sucks.” That’s just too overboard for me. For once I’d like to see the Cup ceremony held with the reverence it deserves.
As far as I’m concerned the classless display inside the arena was only trumped by the classless display outside the arena.
Goodell was booed at last year’s draft (April 2010, I mean), which was before the lockout. I’m assuming he was booed this year (as you said, probably because of the lockout – but I didn’t see the first round, as it was during Game 1).
In any case, like I said, I don’t think Bettman sucks. He’s fine. I don’t have strong feelings about the commissioner of any sport, except Selig. For the record: I love David Stern and he has never done anything wrong ever (this remark included to keep my brake lines from being cut by NBA operatives).
What if, having said that, I boo Bettman? I’m not booing him because I hate him. Like I said, he’s fine. I’m booing him because people like giving the metaphorical digitus impudicus to authority. Bettman – in this great spectrum of life – is a square. He’s the school principal. But, c’mon, he’s not the pope and he’s not the president.

I would never equate Bettman to the Pope or the President, but I think that a lot of the dignity of the Cup Presentation Ceremony is taken away because of the people booing, and last night was beyond booing. It was unfiltered hatred towards Bettman as if he somehow personally wronged that city and everyone in it.
I will always personally be grateful to Bettman for having at least a minor role in keeping the Preds exactly where they are.
I’m with you, I think booing the Commish is a “cool 5 years ago” thing that’s run its course.
They should let Brendan Shanahan hand it out, a senior exec who no hockey fan in his right mind would boo.
Until he starts handing out suspensions, of course.

Let me put it this way: I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the act of booing the commissioner in and of itself. I recognize there’s a difference in razzing the guy and being vitriolic, but I’m not in the business of psychoanalyzing 18,000 Canadians to figure out from what place within them they are going to bring forth the boo.
When it goes into the Conn Smythe and/or Cup presentations or when what-have-you gets thrown on the ice – that’s a bridge too far, but that’s not “booing the commissioner,” that’s “booing during a trophy presentation” and “throwing things on the ice.”

But there is a time and place for everything. Vancouver fans completely drowned out presentation of Tim Thomas’s Conn Smythe Award and Zdeno Chara’s accepting the Stanley Cup. Since they series began, they’ve been blaming everyone and everything for the Canucks’ failure…except the team. This was their penultimate gesture. Except for the riot and arson after the game, of course. Vancouver was completely without dignity last night. Predaceous is right: the fans there are classless.

That's what Poile does
He’s constantly on the lookout for a diamond in the rough a la Hornqvist or Kostitsyn. The problem with so many of them has been Trotz running them off without a real chance to show what they had. Maybe deserved, maybe not, but I know of one Trotz reject who just hoisted the Cup.
