Shea Weber & Pekka Rinne named to NHL All-Star teams

While they may not have taken home major trophies tonight, Nashville Predators Shea Weber and Pekka Rinne achieved franchise firsts by being named to the post-season NHL All-Star Teams. When a player is referred to as an "NHL All-Star", this is the honor they're talking about (not just having made it to an All-Star Game). Shea Weber made the 1st All-Star team alongside Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom on defense (interestingly, Weber got more 1st-place votes than Lidstrom, 67-60), and Pekka Rinne was named goalie on the 2nd All-Star team.

These honors are voted upon by the hockey writers, and Weber's partner Ryan Suter also placed 10th in the defense voting.

From the NHL:

Twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks added to their 2010-11 honor roll tonight as they became the first brothers voted to the NHL First All-Star Team since Hockey Hall of Famers Phil and Tony Esposito, representing the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks, respectively, took First Team honors in 1969-70.

Joining the Sedins is Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who garnered his 10th career berth on the First Team. Lidstrom joins Ray Bourque (13) and Doug Harvey (10) as the only defensemen in League history with 10 or more First Team selections.

Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas is a First-Team choice for the second time in three seasons, while right wing Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks and defenseman Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators are first-time selections.

Among those named to the Second Team is Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, who earned a place on a post-season All-Star Team for the sixth time. Ovechkin made NHL history in 2009-10 by capturing First Team honors in each of his first five NHL seasons.

Joining Ovechkin on the Second Team are two members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, center Steven Stamkos and right wing Martin St. Louis, plus goaltender Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators and defensemen Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins and Lubomir Visnovsky of the Anaheim Ducks.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

I didn't even know about this.

Seems like a big deal, only 12 players a year and 2 from each position (well, 4 for d-men).

Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."

Somehow, Ryan Jones was passed over.

HAHAHAHA. How about no Crosby? He was pretty dominant pre-concussion.

I wish there would've been a Gnome on Cory Perrys trophy!

He wouldn’t have picked it up. Come to think of it, why don’t the Preds just put a Gnome as the logo on our jerseys everytime we play the Ducks? We’d win every time.
