NHL Draft 2011 Day 2 Open Thread & Saturday notes
It was a wild day yesterday as the 2011 NHL Entry Draft got under way, with major trades making news around the league. San Jose dealt Devon Setoguchi to Minnesota, Chicago was able to dump the Brian Campbell contract, and the Maple Leafs picked up an offensive defenseman to fill the void left by Tomas Kaberle.
Will we see anything like that today (coverage starts at 10:00 Central on NHL Network)? The Predators will finally get down to business with the 8th pick in the second round, so use this thread to follow all the action, and follow after the jump for your morning hockey notes...
The "Toast of Music City" balloting is open, and we'd appreciate your vote for OTF as Best Blog in Nashville; just click the banner below to head over there, where you can vote daily (click the green button)!

Pick up a couple forwards...
…that are the equivalent of Suter and Weber please. :)
Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."
Haha, maybe Khokhlachev would fill that bill.

Pretty much the three guys we’re hoping on being available.
Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."
He was teammates with Ellis, and his name is not Radulov. I think he’s a different person and would probably stick around.

He’s already been over here in NA a while, and I bet they have him as one of those 4 targets they’re looking at.
This past season in Windsor was his first season playing over in North America, so I’m not sure he’s been over here very long.

Grimaldi at #38 and maybe Prince or Rask if they’re still there at #52 would work. :)

Our exciting 2009 draft
It could end up being a banner year for us. Ellis, Budish, Roussel, Beck, Latta, Smith, Ekholm and Bourque. All of these guys have legit NHL-level potential!
Actually, the first 3 picks of that draft almost drove me to madness. Hope they work out, but we left some good forwards on the board in those first two rounds.

Jurco,Grimaldi,Khokhlachev
Like I have said in the other thread if we can get Jurco, Grimaldi, or Khokhlachev I would be very happy. All of these prospects can score and can play a little D.Khokhlachev however would be my first pick as he is the elite scorer we need for the future.
But will he play here, that is the question.

We're not doing anything!
This is just yet another episode of this organization thinking themselves smarter than the conventional wisdom and doing the contrarian thing. They sat on their collective asses while the top offensive talent in yet another draft got gobbled up. You know why our offense sucks? Because we don’t freaking draft any offense!

Nobody drafts for need in the second round, these players are years away – you draft who you think is the best player available. Hellberg sounds legit.

Freaking out over a 2nd-round draft pick, guys who won’t sniff the NHL for 3-4 years, if ever.

if ever? well geez, why even bother drafting anyone at all then? pretty crappy way to look at it
<=B
You just have to take the long view
Don’t look at today’s draftees in comparison to today’s needs of the team. Draft the guys you think can best make the NHL, and things work out in the long run. Offensive help for the Preds in 2011-12 isn’t coming from this draft.

that much is clear… but don’t you see a pattern… everyone understands that this isn’t a football draft…. these players will not play next year (with the exception of a few from the top) but if we don’t start taking skilled offensive players now we all always have the same weakness… sorry man, but i see the long term, and it looks a lot like the short term
<=B
Your reasoning assumes that the draft is Nashville’s sole source of talent. There are trades and free agency, too. Given the Preds’ proven success at developing goalies and defensemen, one could argue that they’re best off draft and developing prospects and using some of them to trade for proven offensive help from other organizations.

When wasthe last time we used a Dman or goalie prospect in a trade for a scorer? Ryan Parent in the Floppa deal. That’s it. It’s great to fanaticize about making this futuristic trade for a skilled forward using our over-surplus of Dmen/goalie prospects, but it doesn’t happen.
by Grizzledbear on Jun 25, 2011 12:06 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Exactly!
This organization is as tone deaf as any team in any league that I can remember. There’s no magic as to why our farm system lacks top end forwards and that’s because we don’t draft them to begin with.

Don’t even start with me there, bud. Show me the offensive talent we’ve drafted in the past 7 or 8 drafts that’s making an imapct on our roster. Always easy to project stardom onto kids that haven’t played a minute in the NHL yet and proclaim them great draft picks.

D-men contribute heavily to the team’s offense, Weber was just two points off the team lead.

Yes, he was two points from leading the team in offense…..and why? Because our forwards can’t score! If you want to be an apologist for everything this team does, go ahead, but that smoke isn’t getting blown up my chimney.
by Grizzledbear on Jun 25, 2011 11:47 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
sigh
I’m not an apologist for the team, but I’ll concede to their draft judgment when it comes to players whom none of us have seen play for any length of time.

One only need look at our forwards in our developmental system and it’s widely acknowledged that it is severly lacking in high end forwards. There were a number of those still on the board at both #38 and #52 and instead we took a goalie and a mucker/grinder forward. It’s a bad draft, plain and simple.
by Grizzledbear on Jun 25, 2011 12:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
i doubt there’s a trade here… do we really ever make draft day deals? a bad pick IMO… and trading Rinne for Parise is AWFUL! did Parise come in 4th in the MVP voting? no… but Rinne did
<=B
Parise barely played, because he was recovering from injury.
Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."
If you look at your way then yes. But I’m looking at the bigger picture, and it’s a fair trade at worst.
Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."
we can’t let a team take advantage of us in a trade just because we sorely need the offensive help
<=B
Parise is one of the top forwards in the league, it would be a great trade for us espacially considering that we not be able to re-sign the UFA Rinne after this season. But it will never happen, so it’s a mute point.
by Grizzledbear on Jun 25, 2011 12:13 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Great numbers on a very defensive oriented team. He’s a top 10 forward in this league.
by Grizzledbear on Jun 25, 2011 12:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
why not though?
We need forwards plain and simple. We have deep pipe lines for defenseman and goalies but we have no true offensive power. He doesn’t even have to be a star, just someone who can score OVER 50 POINTS in a season. sigh.
I live in the OC.
The one in OH.
see this stinks of desperation and that’s the number one way to get taken advantage of in a trade
<=B
what would you suggest than?
I wouldn’t argue with the idea that I’m desperate. I know I don’t necessarily need to be, but I personally think that a top forward is what will help us get over hump. Do you disagree with the idea that the offense is our weakest component?

It’s great to draft these D and G, but if you aren’t going to trade them for offense, its ridiculous. The complaint is always that O is too expensive or not available, but if Poile isn’t going to draft them, they will be expensive. We will be like this forever
Maybe the most disturbing thing about this is that it’s the third draft in a row where we did not make even one move to move up in the draft in the 1st or 2nd rounds or trade for a current NHL player. To watch Florida snatch up Grimaldi (Tallon does it again) and the Wings grab Jurco just a few spots ahead of us is extremely disappointing.
Looks like I was right about us not wanting Russian players. Khokhlachev was right there for the taking at #38 and we passed him by.

Stupid Radulophobia. They did try to move up in the first though.
Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."
Not so sure it was as much us trying to move up as it was another team wanting one of our young players in exchange for that pick. This has been the most depressing draft ever.

Yeah, no ticker really either, have to use NHL.com

Poile traded #172 for NYR's next year 6th rounder.
I guess he’s stocking up.

We’re the only team that makes its best picks in the 7th round………

And for those who say 2nd rounders are 3 to 4 year projects......
Derek Stepan was drafted late in the 2nd round by the Rangers and only took one year to make a big impact on their roster. O’Reilly’s brother was a 2nd rounder as well and stepped right into the NHL. We need better picks, not excuses.

perhaps
They were in stronger draft classes. This one wasn’t considered particularly strong, right?
I live in the OC.
The one in OH.
True, but it’s also why you have to be agressive in moving up in a weaker draft. Still, there were some skilled kids left at #38 and we passed up on them. But my main point is that this 3 to 4 year talk for a 2nd rounder developing into an NHL talent isn’t that cut and dry.

Nope, the Avs picked him just ahead of both Budish and Roussell.

regard all Poile draft picks as 3 to 4 years away
it is just the way he operates. players like WIlson and Legwand are the anomalies and even they were still 1 year projects. Poile has never drafted anyone to attempt to fill an immediate need but one he believes the team will have in a few years.
Keys to the game: GF>GA
Even if that’s the case, did not any of the forwards still on the board at #38 meet that criteria? Our prospect system lacks high end forwards, if you don’t draft them at some point, you’ll continue to have that problem.

Brent Andrews
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’ 2" Weight: 200
Born: January 19, 1993
Born in: Hunter River, PE, CAN
(7th Round / 202nd Overall)
Whoa
our 5th rounder.. the swedish defenseman Karlsson grew 4 inches from 5’11 to 6’3 in the last year. Compared by a swedish scout to Franson
from the preds:
The Preds wrapped up their 2011 draft with three picks — one defenseman and two forwards — and a trade during the final three rounds of the draft.
In the fifth round the Preds selected Swedish defenseman Simon Karlsson. The Preds European scouts have a knack for unearthing hidden gems in the later rounds. Karlsson went through a major growth spurt over the last 12 months, growing from around 5-11 to 6-3. Swedish scout Lucas Bergman compares his game to current Preds defenseman Cody Franson and as he grows into his now 6-3 frame, Bergman thinks Karlsson can become a special player.
In the sixth round the Preds tabbed U.S. forward Chasen Balisy from Western Michigan University. Balisy’s Jeff Blashill said, “Chase has an elite mind for the game. I think his hockey smarts and his hockey IQ are outstanding. I thought that he had gotten stronger and quicker over the course of the season. That added strength and quickness allowed Chase to be a real elite freshman. And I think as he continues to add that strength and quickness, it will allow him to be an elite player in college and have a great chance at becoming an NHL player.”
The Preds traded their second sixth round pick to the NY Rangers for a 2012 sixth rounder. And then in the seventh round, Nashville selected 6-2, 200-pound forward Brent Andrews of the QMJHL. Regarded as one of the QMJHL’s best faceoff aces and toughest defensive centers, Andrews turned heads with his solid two-way performances for Team Canada at the World Under-18 Championships. He was on a below average Halifax team, so his stats are not indicative of the on-ice level he provided for the Mooseheads.
Check back later today for more recap and reaction from the draft floor.
Andrews is a Center then
the NHL draft card said LW. Sorry
As happy as I am for the kids who got picked today......
This was the most depressing draft I think I have ever experienced. If I honestly thought we were going to make some splash in the trade or UFA market, it would temper that disappointment, but let’s face it, there’s a slim chance that will happen based on past experience.
A goalie at #38………..wow. :/
