Could we use some offense?
I read in an online community somewhere that the Predators could use some offense. I can't quite remember where. Sounds like solid thinking to me though. In 2010-2011, We ranked 21st in offense, 3rd in goaltending, and 2nd in defense. Logic says that a few more goals over the course of the season would put us in pretty good position to be a cup contender. Hard to argue that.
I read somewhere else that the Predators should trade away one of their 3 top assets, possibly combined with one of their best prospects and/or a draft pick, for that one guy that seems to have eluded the Preds altogether (or simply decided to play for the folks in Mother Russia) up to this point.. The sniper. The 40 goal scorer. The elite forward.
That ONE GUY. (regardless of whether he is actually available or not)
Now, I'm a hardcore fan. I don't ever turn it off or go home early when the Preds are are sucking the life out of the game. I enjoy the sport too much to let it get me down for too long, no matter what happens to me and my man, Marty Erat. Like every other fan though, even the chicken little types, I want to win the Big Silver Punch Bowl one day. So I too would love to see "that guy" in a Preds uni. Is it possible that we could get one without trading the farm though? Some say "no way".
Check this out. Sorted by year.

There's a guy, maybe even two, in that list that have some degree of goal scoring ability. Heck, there may even be a guy or two that might pitch in with a helper once in a while... Definitely more than one I would take on my team.
I know, all of you are asking the exact same question though. Where's Pavel Datsyuk? He scored 35 points his first full year in you fool! True, but he didn't hit the NHL until he was 23 so he didn't quite fit the criteria for this list.
So...how about the Pred killer himself, old Patrick Sharp then! He started out at age 21, moron! He has to be on there somewhere. He would be, except he didn't hit the 35 point plateau until year 5 in the league. :(
Wait, what about that guy that plays with the Sedins now then, smart guy? Arrogant #$%@, Hobey Baker finalist... What's his name? I feel like I've seen him play somewhere recently... Kesler! That's it. What about Ryan Kesler then? He played a few games at age 20 and then cranked out an ironman 82 game season his first full year if I recall! Well, frankly, his 23 points that year aren't quite enough to make the above list either.
I guess the reason I am so drawn to focus on guys like Beck, Latta, Wilson, Boomer, Ellis, Bourque, yada yada, is because we own those guys. Who knows when the next Fisher/Forsberg/Witt/Sullivan trade or Arnott/Kariya/ Dumont/Lombardi contract is going to go down? Not me. I didn't see a single one of those coming. In fact, I'm sure that whatever the Nashville equivalent of the flashy Kaberle acquisition is will take me by surprise as well.
No rock solid guarantees of anything, obviously. Just food for thought...or fuel for fire.

I there any doubt he is doing the virtual lasso dance to a cowgirl in the stands here? I think the odds are better than certain.

Great post
but with the way Trotz is, he won’t let an offensive specialist thrive in the system unless he locks down the defense first, which isn’t a bad philosophy, except for the fact that you also need to score goals to win games not just keep the other team from scoring. I believe we have the guys too, but will Trotz loosen the reins to let them work.
Keep in mind, when this team had lots of offensive talent in 06-07, Trotz let them play. We scored more goals that year than the “almighty” Canucks did in the last. Playoffs, however, are a different concern…

+1. Lots of people don’t seem to remember that Trotz, fairly recently, got a lot of offense out of a team.

I mostly buy in to the “defense wins championships” framework. Especially for teams with financial limitations. So, Trotz’s style doesn’t bug me as much as it does the folks that would give up a little D to get a little more O.
To be fair though. If we could somehow keep the core of this defense in tact and manage to bring in a true veteran or two with some serious offensive skill in the next couple of years, we could be that team that nobody wants any part of.

I don’t think anyone here is suggesting that no 21-year old could get the job done. They’re saying its not very likely and too big a risk to bank on. You’ve selected some guys who did it, but haven’t indicated in any way how common or uncommon that is. Compare this list to all the 21-year-olds who’ve played in the league and what do you see? No, I’m actually asking. what does it look like?
PS. Stamkos just turned 21. Why isn’t he on your list? I’m hurt and insulted.
PPS. Great poll. Good thing I know the correct answer. :)
SERIOUSLY GUYS, STOP TRYING TO TRADE PEKKA!!!
Part Predator, part Lightning.
I thought the poll was pretty easy too. :)
You’ve selected some guys who did it
Believe it or not, the list is an unedited statistical query with just a few limitations. They are:
1. 1995 – present (I just did this for player familiarity mostly)
2. Age 21 at the all-star break
3. 1 or 2 seasons of NHL experience
So, I wasn’t really trying to compare CW to all forwards. I just found him in the query and put a 2 point cushion around him. This seems like a fair way to see who else had a similar start in the NHL. That was really my point, not necessarily to predict a certain level of success, more just to see who else falls in the category. With our luck, we may very well have Chris Campoli 2.0. Like I said, no rock solid guarantees
haven’t indicated in any way how common or uncommon that is. Compare this list to all the 21-year-olds who’ve played in the league and what do you see?
Short answer? He falls just out side the top 10% of all forwards in the query. 46 guys had a better start, 521 started out worse.
PS. Stamkos just turned 21. Why isn’t he on your list? I’m hurt and insulted.
Another short answer? Stamkos is too good for this list. Way too good. Too young too. As would be Crosby, Kane, Skinner, Toews, etc… For reference however, here are the top 13. That’s right, not the top 10. The top 13:
Player PTS
Paul Kariya 108
Evgeni Malkin 106
Eric Staal 100
Alex Ovechkin 92
Nicklas Backstrom 88
Paul Stastny 78
Alex Tanguay 77
Dany Heatley 67
Scott Gomez 63
Brad Richards 62
Mike Comrie 60
Ryan Getzlaf 58
Alexander Radulov 58
I did “select” three guys at the end, but only for effect since they weren’t “good” enough to make the list. :)

Right. Didn’t mean selected in that sense. Just meant that you defined certain criteria upon which to base your sample, blah, blah, blah.
This is honestly all new info to me. I didn’t realize Willy was that far up the list. I wonder how certain other of our regulars will take this analysis. I doubt you will convince a certain bear that we can rely upon our kids to increase our offense this season.

Actually, there is a tiny “link” to Stamkos in the post that I thought you might appreciate.

Here you go!
A list of every 21 year old to play in the league. There are quite a few who did get the job done.

As long as it's relevant to the discussion, that's totally cool
If you just popped up a FanPost that screamed “hey, come look at my site”, that would be another thing entirely. Cool stuff!

Why can’t we get some of those guys? Oh. Yeah. No time machine.

We should buy some of those mini-blimps that fly around the arena and drop prizes =D

Personally I think...
… this team needs less offense, and to win every game 1-0 in a SO.
Either this or fix the power play by hiring me to instruct the team to “SHOOT THE %#$!#$^ING PUCK!!!”
Are we supposed to trade for one of those guys?
I don’t get it. If we trade Suter I might become a Thrashers fan though.
