Friday's notes: This Smith kid must be alright
I have to keep the intro to today's notes short & sweet, but I'll offer up one reaction to last night's news that Craig Smith is turning pro rather than returning to the University of Wisconsin:
The Nashville Predators have typically been very patient with the development of their prospects, and part of that strategy involves getting the maximum use out of a player's entry level contract. Once a player's pro career gets started, the clock starts ticking towards free agency, so that starting date is important.
For the Preds to encourage Smith to turn pro, I have to think that they see him playing with the Predators this season, not necessarily right out of training camp, because it makes little sense for him to make this move if the plan were simply to play in Milwaukee all year. This kid will bear close watching at training camp...

Because I like fomenting conspiracy theories
Interesting that Smith’s announcement comes the day after SOTU, when we got the hard sale from DP and BT on him. And which two current Preds were on hand? Former Badgers Suter and Bam-Bam, of course. They were DP’s spies, sent to Madison to woo the beigely-named collegian into forgoing the rest of his schoolboy career. When the time was right, The Skating Manchurian Candidates were recalled to Nashville via signals from their conniving general manager’s BlackBerry (NB: Does DP use a BlackBerry? I say no).

My brother’s, sister, mother’s, husband’s, son heard that the Ads are changing their name to the Milwaukee Badgers next year. True story. Also, A Rad just signed a lease on Pacman’s old place in Franklin. I’ve got that on good info as well but I hear it’s hush hush (you know, Rossiyskaya Mafiya).

Really true story
The Milwaukee Badgers were an NFL team in the mid-20s. They got in a bunch of trouble for using high school players in a professional game. I’m holding out hope that this strategy is not part of the plan for the Predators organization.

Maybe Smith left Wisconsin...
… because he didn’t want to be part of a lame duck team in the WCHA when they are about to jump to the new Big Ten hockey league?
Not the reason.
Wisconsin can win the National Championship coming out of either league. Although the WCHA is better.

Personally, I think he left Wisconsin…. cause whats in Wisconsin? Plus you throw in Barry T’s “fun, no fun” comparison of Nashville and a college town… I really don’t see how he could have resisted such overwhelming evidence that college sucks

My opinion is that they are rushing smith along to fill spots in Cin and Mil because of all the young guys that are going to be with Nashville.
As to the article on our 2009 draft.........
It points to a real paradox in our drafts. We may be as good as any team, maybe better than any team, at drafting in the 3rd thru 7th rounds. But except for really the Suter/Weber draft year, we’ve been quite average in the 1st and 2nd rounds, maybe even a bit below average. Some good players picked in those rounds, but outside of Radulov, we haven’t selected one true 1st line forward yet. That could change with some of the kids we have in the system, but even there it’s the later round picks like Smith, Beck, Latta and even Cehlin that seem to be the higher end offensive talents. Those 2nd rounds have been our weakspot, IMO.

by Grizzledbear on Jul 15, 2011 6:09 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I agree
But the nhl draft is really hard to be perfect in. Judging a player at 18-20 (usually) to see whether he could be an nhl contributor 3+ years later is extremely difficult. That’s why so many succesful players were drafted in later rounds, and also why many 1st rounders can be busts. An 18 year old 7th-rounder can go from an average forward to an elite power forward if he hits the right growth spurt.

True, but.......
As has been noted by people who analysis this, the percentage of players who make the NHL and play at least 100 games or more goes down each round from 1st to 7th round. It’s those first two rounds where you need to hit the home runs in. Using top 60 picks on Finley, Pickard and Smith really have hurt us, IMO. Outside of Weber, our 2nd round picks are pretty weak overall.

Like Konstantin Glazachev? :P But Klein was 2nd round, while he’s our whipping boy – he’s hardly a “bust”.
Gold jerseys: Haters gonna hate.
Not a bust, but IIRC, we took Klein ahead of Plekanic in that draft. Who was that other bust of a forward we took in the 2nd round that year, some German kid who never played a game here. Ugh.
Stepan, Statsny, Plekanic………how good would we be if we took those kids in the 2nd rounds?
Trotz says "we don't need more offense" and Poile "likes where we are right now". We're doomed!!!
by Grizzledbear on Jul 15, 2011 8:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Of course
And I agree that we could/should have done better in the first two rounds. But compared to other major sports, the % of top draft picks that find success is not like that of football. If you go back and look at the 1st rounds of previous drafts, you’ll find a lot of people you’ve never heard of. But Nashville excels at finding diamond in the roughs that other teams don’t even have on their radar, allowing Nashville to pick them up in later rounds. I also think we have gotten a little unlucky. Pickard looked to be destined to dominate in the NHL, but psychological issues have caused a road-block. It’s nearly impossible to scout that, just like it’s impossible to know whether a guy will want to go back home and cash in a few years after you draft him.

The Wings seem to do well in finding those late round gems as well. ;)
But we’re not the only team to have some bad luck with high round selections. Both the Rangers and Canucks had 1st rounders pass away way before their time in recent years. It’s why you really can’t afford to miss to often with those top 60 picks, as injury or even worse can wipe out a seemingly good pick.

With football and to some extent basketball
the draft is more important because there is no minor league, the nba has the d-league and the summer league thing but its still not a true minor league. With Hockey and baseball you have a minor league system so that you can draft the young guys and actually develop them and bring them up when they are ready to play at that level. Now not all of them will make it of course. With football you see it all the time where a guy gets drafted really high and then is not able to have the time to develop and is just thrust into the job and ends up not being mature enough or just not ready for it yet. They cant send him down and let him work his way back up they are either stuck with him and have to let him learn on the fly or basically let him go and he most then likely wont get another shot.
Exactly
That’s why I’m saying projecting a hockey prospect’s potential is so hard because he has a lot of developing and maturing still ahead of him.

I agree
It hard to project any sports athlete’s potential because some will mature faster then others and some will be able to come out and light up the game while others are late bloomers and they have to get used to the level of play and then they find the area to excel and do so. Also injuries play a huge part in it and with football and basketball you have one big injury and the sport dumps you to the side and you rarely ever get back on top where as hockey or baseball you can go and rehab then get back in with out having to worry about being left behind. You have the time to build back up to it and not rush back and risk further injury (see Sully after his back problem)
That is where your scouts can make or break a franchise. Even for the big spending teams, you can’t mess up to often with your high round picks. It’s suicide if a small market team doesn’t get it right.

Luckily...
Our organization has gotten it right with Rinne, Suter, Weber, Klein, Blum, Hornqvist, Pickard, Glazachev, and, of course, Brian Finley, our former franchise AHL goalie. I think our 2001 draft, especially our 4 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, really impress me, as well as our 2nd round gem Dan “the man” Widing from 2000.

Well to be fair
We have never had the first overall pick nor have we had a pick high enough to select any of the players who were a “can’t miss” pick such as Crosby, Stamkos, etc. etc. If drafting players was such a fool proof process, all teams would do it properly instead of drafting players like when the Titans drafted Vince Young…

it’s interesting that for all the guff the Rangers get for overspending on players and what not, they have made some of the shrewdest picks in recent drafts. They got both Stepan and Dubinsky late in the 2nd round and Callahan in the 4th round. Somebody is doing their job right there even if their GM’s moves are often questionable.

I seem to remember us having some pretty good picks too recently
it will just take a little more time to see which of them pan out fully.
On the other hand, why is it we didn’t get the number one pick in 98 as the expansion team?
by musamonster on Jul 16, 2011 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Not really fair to compare proven players with one’s that may be effective NHL players some day. Point is, the Rangers really scooped other teams with those picks, including the Preds.
As to your question, my guess is we lost out in the lottery thingy that they do and slipped back to the 2nd pick.

No, it’s not… But 2 years from now, it might look completely different. And Stepan has had a good year, but for all we know he could fall apart next year.
But the real steal that I see is Josh Shalla in the 4th round. What’s up with this guy to not get drafted, and even get skipped the year before. If he a headcase or something?
As far as the number one pick, seems a shame the expansion team should have to go through the lottery and not get the number one pick automatically. But hey, that’s ancient history… Though it might have been nice to get Lecavalier.
by musamonster on Jul 16, 2011 12:55 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Now who’s doing coulda, woulda, shoulda? ;)
In my many (many) years of following this game, you simply can’t assume that a players junior or college output will translate into NHL success. Until you do it at the NHL level, you haven’t really done anything yet.
Schalla got passed by for one big reason: his skating is subpar. It’s why Beck fell to the 3rd round as well. They both need to improve in that area if they’re to have success in the NHL.
Trotz says "we don't need more offense" and Poile "likes where we are right now". We're doomed!!!

Hey true… But then again we don’t who Poile would have picked if we had the first pick that year (or has he talked about it before?)
Then again, he might not have had the talent around him here to succeed like he eventually got in Tampa. Or more likely, we would have traded him away in 07 ha ha ha.

Our first round draft picks, all time
Year Pick Player Position
1998 2 David Legwand Center
1999 6 Brian Finley Goaltender
2000 6 Scott Hartnell Left Wing
2001 12 Dan Hamhuis Defence
2002 6 Scottie Upshall Right Wing
2003 7 Ryan Suter Defence
2004 15 Alexander Radulov Right Wing
2005 18 Ryan Parent Defence
2006 No Pick
2007 23 Jonathon Blum Defence
2008 7 Colin Wilson Center
2008 18 Chet Pickard Goaltender
2009 11 Ryan Ellis Defence
2010 18 Austin Watson Right Wing
I think those are mostly very good draft picks. No one outstanding though, those ones are hard to come by.
He's really not being rushed along...
Smith has played in juniors 3 years prior to 2 with the Badgers. He’ll be 21 when camp starts.
If he’s a point a game in college, it’s time to move up.
Now for the Wisconsin and hockey part. Madison has been voted by Playboy as one of the ELITE party schools in the nation. So much so, that they were taken off that list one year as they were deemed professional when all of the other colleges were considered amatuer.
Wisconsin hockey has a rich history and is a top 10 team in the nation annualy. Even when they are “rebuilding”, and fill up a 17,000 seat barn whenever the Badgers play. Hockey makes money for that school. A game there is a treat to watch with not only the fans, but the best band in the land.
Now for the pro game. It’s gonna be a learning curve for him. Things will be coming alot faster and the boys are bigger. It will take him time to adjust along with the longer season. Then we’ll see where his conditioning is at. College plays on the weekends. 2 games in a row, 5 days off. The wall usually hits them around the beginning of January in the pros. Then we’ll see where his conditioning is at.
That being said…
Craig Smith is going to be one hell of a player.

Good points, I think if he keeps working like he does – he may not blow us away this year but in a year or two really become a top-line forward.

I tend to agree with you here. It’s only if Smith gets pressured to be a top 6 guy and fill the scoring void up here that would be problematic. He may well make the roster here, but that’s as much an indictment on how weak we are front as it is on how good Smith may be.
Speaking of top 6 forwards, the Caps made out well with getting Alzner signed for well under 2M per season. Thought he would get more than that. It really takes any pressure they may have had to move Semin off of them now. They just need to get Poti’s salary demoted or on LTIR and they’ll be in good cap shape.

Nah
If he had, Weber would be with the Canucks for $2 mil a year
This is where Poile...
Could have pushed the issue a bit. If Alzner was an RFA, offer him say…1.8. Still a bargain IMO, but this would force the Caps to move somebody. Now maybe the Caps wouldn’t want to play with DP after doing something like that, but then we’d have a bargain with Karl, and we could trade Lebda for a bag of pucks…
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
Considering the weaker financial hand Poile has to work with, I doubt he ever tenders an offer sheet to anyone. He’d open up a pandora’s box if he ever did so.

Offer sheets, offer sheets, offer sheets. I have heard more than I ever wanted to hear about offer sheets this summer.
DP ain’t gonna offer sheet a guy unless and screw up all relationships with his colleagues, esp since the chances of actually getting a player that way are extremely slim. If the Caps didn’t want Alzner they wouldn’t have given him a QO and he would have been a UFA on July 1. They wanted him, they would have matched and every RFA we have for the next 10 years would have gotten offer sheeted by Washington.

Yes, DP ain’t offer sheetin’ no one. He’s not going to burn bridges or try to outspend other big money teams. It’ll be through trades, declined arbitration contracts, or later on in the Free Agency (February, or as need comes for injuries or whatnot).

Preds had no play at Alzner. No one did. Caps have their own.kid D pair, and they’re keeping Alzner-Carlson together for awhile. Great few weeks for them … good stuff from George McPhee. Overpaid for Joel, but they know what they need. … Not sure Poile would stick it to his.old.team like that, but he had no.play on Alzner. (And you can forget about Semin too.) Eric Fehr? That was an opportunity missed. He would have been good here, I think.
