Saturday's notes: Who to trade?
David Poile has had a busy week locking up his restricted free agents, and while the biggest and baddest of them all still remains in Shea Weber, there's also that pesky issue of a Top 6 forward which is sorely needed. With guys like J.P. Dumont, Joel Ward, and Steve Sullivan all having left the team this summer, there's a gaping hole up front that the kids aren't ready to fill at this time.
The problem, however, is that the free agency ranks have pretty much been picked clean. You've got perhaps Corey Stillman (but I thought we were moving away from aging, undersized wingers) and Nikolay Zherdev (who can't seem to keep his coaches happy), but nobody who jumps out at you as a surefire performer for 2011-12.
That then, raises the specter of trading for such a player. But the question then becomes, who goes? Cody Franson was already sent packing in order to get the Maple Leafs to take on Matthew Lombardi's contract, so you'd have to think that in order to bring in a difference-making forward, it might require the Predators to part with another young blueliner.
Or are there other assets which might work in such a deal? I doubt Poile would part with another 1st-round draft pick after sitting out this year's opening night of the draft, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on who, realistically, the Predators could part with in exchange for a Top 6 forward.
Feel free to delve into that question in the comments below, after reading your morning hockey news...

All I can think of is Klein...
not because I want to pick on him, but he is a decent defenseman who plays good minutes and on the PK. All and all I think it becomes a choice between him and trading away one of defensive prospects that is coming up..
If we’re picking up a true top-6 in return, then Colin Wilson could provide some good trade value.
Something like:
Colin Wilson
Roman Josi
Anders Lindback
…could land a pretty decent top 6, while something like
Colin Wilson
Ryan Ellis
Anders Lindback
Draft pick(s)
…could probably land Stamkos or Parise. (Ellis only being expendable if we think Josi and/or Ekholm are the real deal.)
As a Lightning fan I can promise you,
no one will get Stamkos away from the Lightning, at least not for the foreseeable future, no matter what they offer. Go shopping somewhere else.

I bet they would give him up for 4 first rounders. I sure as heck would, and that’s exactly what it will cost someone to get him without giving up half their roster.
It’s not like the Bolts are tight against the cap though so I don’t hink he is going anywhere either. I bet if you locked him in a room with Guy Boucher he would sign anything after a couple of minutes.

No they won’t. I assure you. There is no question, NONE, that Tampa Bay will match any offer sheet given. And if they’ll match up to and including $12M on an offer sheet, there’s no trade in the world that Stevie Y will agree to. He is the face of their franchise, the player they are building around, the future of the game, the game-changer, all of that. Hell, he’s their Weber, only with endorsement deals and billboards all over town.
And I wish they would lock him in a room with Boucher. It’d take a whole lot of the stress out my life.

You are probably right. He really has very little leverage being so young too, especially since they are are not exactly hurting in the skilled forward department.
I like the idea of having 8 first round picks over the course of 4 seasons though. I would have a hard time not letting Weber walk of we were put in that unlikely position…

Weber, Suter, and Ellis....
These 3 are the only guys on our team that I think would yield anything worthwhile. I guess there’s always draft picks, too.
I think we could probably get a bag of chips for Rinne if we were looney enough to dangle him out there.

Trading a player you have no assurance of being able to re-sign after the season is over for a player who could fill a big void in your lineup that you could have for a longer term is not a loony thing to do at all. But it would have to be for a Parise type player.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 11:10 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
My point was that Rinne has significant trade value. His value would vary some depending on the suitor but he was regarded by many as the top player on our team. Actually, he was regarded by some as the league MVP last year.

Aside from the question of what it would do to us to lose him
You have to look at who would want him right now, when they can wait a year and get him for free. Who is only a goaltender away from being a contender this year, has a glut of high-end forwards, and is willing to make this deal? I can’t think of anyone myself.
(My position on the impact Rinne has on this team has been well-documented over last week or two. I think we would lose a lot more than we gain by trading Rinne.)

Of course it would have to be in a trade that could benefit us, that’s understood from the outset. it would only be an option right now if some team ran into trouble during arbitration with one of their players (Devils and Rangers would be two teams, though it’s unlikely). But it is something to keep in consideration if something did open up like that.

Believe it or not, I do foresee a day when Rinne will play for another team. I will cry on opening day, and then get on with my life. I just don’t think that we have anyone who can take his place at this time. And it’s more than SV% and GAA. It’s the confidence that having the best in the league on your side brings. It’s his calm presence on the ice. It’s all those intangibles that we lose. I want to add to those qualities, not gamble on someone new bringing that in.

But if you lose Rinne to free agency and get nothing back for him………just saying.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 12:54 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The difference between our positions is which risk we’re willing to take. i’d rather risk not being able to re-sign him than give him up this year. [OT: This is why Poile always drafts goalies, so you’ve got someone developing all the time. Sometimes the timing stinks and you get a prospect develop faster than you can use him (Dex). Sometimes a contract comes up before you’ve got a replacement ready.]
You’d rather risk losing Rinne’s skill and leadership than not take advantage of a trade opportunity. Not that I rationally expect Poile wouldn’t consider trading Rinne if the price was right. Its just that my idea of the “right price” is likely higher than yours.

Will probably take a package of picks/prospects, unless........
some team could be enticed to take the rights to ARad as part of the offer. He really is our best possible trading chip if the other team goes for it.
The bigger problem I see is: what team will want to trade a top 6 forward to us? We missed out on the UFA market and also on all the trades that went down (as a side note, remember the talk of a Franson for Setoguchi trade? Seems like a missed opportunity there). Right now, unless some team thinks they can lure Rads back over here in 12/13 (probably to late to do so in 11/12), it would take a big package of Ellis, Wilson and picks to get something done, and then most likely only if some team (please let it be the Devils) run into problems in arbitration trying to re-sign one of their players.
One of my favorite sayings in life is “don’t make perfect the enemy of the good” and I think that’s what GMDP got caught doing this past month or so. Sure, you want a quality player at the right price, but by looking for that perfect UFA price or perfect trade to present itself, now there’s really not much left on either front.

Maybe we want someone from a “contender” who goes in the tank this year. Just like we landed Fisher…
If a team like SJ starts to head south, for example, how nice would it be for a team in need of a forward to pick that roster apart?

It’s July and we are talking about NHL hockey. It’s kind of like speculating that NJ would give up Parise over guys like Elias or Rolston. Not likely but not impossible either.
Don’t forget that my premise is also exactly how we landed guys like Fisher and Forsberg.

And it’s also how we ended up empty handed at the 2008, 2009 and 2010 trade deadlines. The percentages are not in any teams favor by taking the wait and see approach, not to mention the high cost of obtaining a quality player later in the season. There’s a reason teams move quickly at the draft and free agency to get players that can help them, the cost is higher as the season goes along.

Which, by the way, would be the stupidest possible thing we could do unless we got a Stamkos, Ovechkin, Crosby, or Datsyuk in return.
I can only assume the people that cal for Suter to be traded really have no idea how important he is to this team’s success.

Have to take a deep breath here. If there’s no concern about improving a dismal offense that just got worse so far this off-season, then sure, there’s no pressure to do anything.
I have to do a fanpost on this sometime, but there are what I call Rocky I fans, folks who, like Rocky Balboa in the first segment of that franchise, have no thought of winning the title, only trying to go 15 rounds with the champ, no matter how bloodied and battered they are at the end of it. While it’s a heart warming story the first time around, at some point, like in the proceeding Rocky films, you actually would like to win the next fight. Some fans are content with every season ending up likne Rocky I.

I would love to see us improve our offense, as should any fan of the Preds, and I think we will. Actually, having Fisher for a full year should be an improvement in itself. 15-20 games should give us an idea if Begfors is an improvement. My thinking is that this team is good enough to get to the playoffs as is. No reason to rush or give away our most valuable assets. It’s a baby-with-the-bathwater thing…

This team made the playoffs by 3pts and has now lost a bunch of players from that squad that we can’t adequatly replace from within let alone improve upon, all the while as many other teams in our conference have improved themselves, some drastically so. It wasn’t just the young players that got us where we ended up at, it was SOB solidifying the defense, it was Goc anchoring the EKG line when our offense was sputtering and it was Ward who helped us as much as anyone in winning our first playoff series. We’ve lost all that and then some.

Derek Roy for Blum or Ellis and a 2 and 4 pick makes sense
Not sure we would like this :); statistically, he is a top 20 center in the NHL point-wise since 07-08. Lots of people in Buffalo really undervalue his contributions to the team.

I was looking at the rosters for those close to the cap ceiling and this seemed like the closest thing to a win-win situation I could see for both teams involved. We get a legit point/game 2 way player at a decent price and they get a good defensive prospect with a small salary. Looking at my original post, one of the D men and 2 picks may be a little much but I could see it happen. Not sure there is much on the Caps team at a good price that seems like it would fit.
We have to trade where we have depth
The only positions where we have depth on this team is at D and 3rd/4th line pluggers. Trading ARad’s rights is a good idea too…though I don’t think a team would give much for that…he’s probably more valuable to us on the slight chance he returns to the NHL.
TRADE FOR ME!...
I was a near 30-goal scorer 2 years ago, and was on track to beat that last year until I was traded and my production plummetted. So I obviously am not working well in my current team’s system. Also, my team is running a high payroll and may want to shed some salary in exchange for picks or prospects!… And we have 5 left-wingers including myself, so am I the perfect trade bait!

I’m not sure I buy into the idea we have lost a lot of offensive talent……Look at who we lost:
1) Dumont.
2) Sully
3) Ward
4)Franson
5) The center who never played
Dumont: His roll on the team had become the healthy scratch. I believe we can replace his marvelous offensive production
Sully: Not healthy, good for the occasional breakaway score….Defensively, becoming a liability.
Ward: With the exception of the playoffs, he did not score. Period. Sure, I like his defensive abilities, but c’mon, he is not an offensive machine.
Franson: Whoever plays his minutes will most likely put up similiar numbers.
The center who never played: What offense???
If we are strictly speaking of offense, what did we really give up? And don’t show me stats, by the end of the year, most these players were non factors, only Ward played well in the playoffs.
Fisher for a full year and if Begfors does anything, we score as much as last year.
This does not mean I don’t want another scorer, but I’m not willing to give up the farm for it, especially in lite scoring will be available during the year, when we need that boost.
I worry more about injuries, because we are thin at forward.
I am not totally against picking up Zherdev but, I have a hard time coming up with a realistic trade for him. Not that we couldn’t get him, just not sure who I would like to see in that deal.

But we were 23rd in scoring with those players, how do you perceive that we will improve upon that with what we have? This isn’t a zero sum game that if we just maintain the status quo we’ll be fine.
And as for mid-season trades, it’s 50/50 you can even get one done and by then our offensive woes may have left us in a bad spot contending for a playoff spot. Again, it’s why teams are agressive at the draft and on July 1st. The points you lose early in the season are often the one’s that cost you a playoff spot.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 12:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I didn’t state we would improve in scoring, I simply point out I don’t believe the sky is falling because we lost all that “offensive” talent.
I do believe, if the guys who were injured and lost during the season stay reasonablly healthy, we will be better offensively. If we play devensively as we are capable, we are a playoff team.
Of course, who wouldn’t want a team with more scoring. I do, but not at the cost of too much because what’s left isn’t much.

But that’s my point, if we’re 23rd in offense now, how do we improve on that with what we’ve done so far this off-season? Unless you’re satisfied with being a bottom 3rd team in offense year after year, we need to be more aggressive in doing something to improve upon that.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 1:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Again, I’m not stating we did anything to improve scoring….But losing the players we lost, imo, does not create a situation where we will be worse. Some act as if the “offensive talent” gone can’t be replaced.
I don’t want to do something rash, either, like trade away a starter for someone who scored 25 in a different system and may score 15 in ours.
We will always and forever be a team that scores by committee until we change directions from the defense first philosophy.
But it seems that you’re content with remaining at a status quo level when it comes to offense and that, IMO, should not be a tolerable option. We’ve been a score by commitee team only since we had to ship away all that talent in the summer of 2007 (since the lockout at least). We seem to forget that it was only 5 seasons ago when we were a great offensive team. We’re not the poor kid on the block anymore, we can do better than 23rd in offense.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 3:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
No, I am not content….You are reading too much into my post.
1) I don’t think we really lost offensive talent.
2) Since we did not participate on July 1st, I do not want to trade away a talanted player for someone who may be marginal….I’m willing to wait into the season.
Why do you suppose that you won’t have to trade something of value, be it a prospect or pick, later in the season for scoring help? If Fisher cost a 1st and 3rd rounder, what will a true scorer cost?
The longer you wait, the higher the price.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 5:43 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Since the cream has been picked over, i do not want to give up a prospect, draft pick or potential starter for what is left…..I would rather choose my opportunities later in the year and better opportunity will be there, it is every year….Like Fisher.
If we want a legit top 6 guy, who has the potential tp score 30+, we will most certainly give up talent…..Probably talent and picks. Later in the year, it may just be picks.
There is also the looming situation one of our prized players, coming into free agency next year, will indicate a trade may be better for all. Hope it does not happen, but there is a possibility. At this point, a top 6 forward is ours.
by Predator Don on Jul 10, 2011 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Besides basing everything on “what if” scenario’s, this all begs a larger what if question: what happens if by waiting that long to make a trade that may not even be available to us leaves behind the pack of playoff teams come Feb. or March? Besides trade deadline prices being extremely high due to a lot of teams being buyers and few teams sellers, why jepordize your season by waiting that long?
Just can’t agree with your line of thinking here, but that’s what forums like this are for. :)

If there’s anything our team and coaching staff can do, it’s make a player better defensively.
I sometimes think we here at OtF tend to look over the guys with poor defensive skills because we assume they will always be bad. I think it was Sam who pointed out to me one time that the defensive game is almost purely a mental game, that it is more knowledge and practice and teaching than it is raw talent. (Exceptions, of course).
Gonna miss you Joel Ward...

Good point. SK74 (no defensive mastermind) wasn’t exactly sent to the doghouse for putting point on the board this year.

I just read that the KHL and NHL came to agreement as to how to handle the contracts of the players flip flopping btwn the leagues. Does anyone know if it included anything about players like Radulov? Would be curious to know if that agreement has any effect on us and bargaining postion or forcing his butt back here to fulfill his contractual obligations.

This thread should be who to sign. Eric Goddard.
If you want Erat and Kostitsyn and Fisher and….whoever to skate around and make offense, you need someone to wear the badge when other teams take libirties on your star players.
Lombardi should be proof enough. 3.5 mil for a handfull of games and then we had to trade Franson to unload his contract because he’s working his way out of la-la land.

Fine...trade Josi...Laakso...and 3 draft picks...
Ellis is special boys.
I give him 50-50 making the team THIS year.
He’s that good…
He can play 2nd group PP and is probably a top 4 blueliner with what the Preds have.
How is Lombardi proof?
He lost his balance and crashed head first into the boards. The guy he had bumped into, Bolland, actually fell first, but missed his head.
Sam...
You’re not helping….and you sound like a Bolland fan.
When your 1st line center goes into the boards…you stand up! Regardless!
You should really watch the Ads sometime…
Except if Poile doesn’t sign some protection, then you can watch all of those draft picks go poof.
Interesting note I read elsewhere that after all the arbitration hearings are over, there will be another three day buyout period. Woltski is a name mentioned as a possible buyout from the Rangers. Not exactly the ideal winger we’ve been looking for, but I’d grab him on the cheap if that happened.

It's the price for the top scorer someone's not going to like.
CAustin would hate if it’s Rinne. Suter probably has the most value, and would cost more to re-sign. I’d like to dump Klein, Lebda, with prospects/picks for the trade but I doubt this would happen.
But if we have to lose one of the Big 3, I think it would have to be Suter. Blum can fill in his spot and could work well with Weber. Cube wasn’t really cut out for that.

I’d still be able to cheer my guys, so that’s good, but ………..well, Tampa has no real defense and Nashville has no one to set Stammer up for those lovely one-timers he’s so good at. …….I think both teams would feel so different to me.
That’s not to say I think its a good plan for either team. We need Peks here for at least 1 more year minimum (I’d prefer 2), and Boucher’s game plan really relies on the speed and puck handling that their forwards have. Now I’d love to see Steve Downie in a Preds uniform, but that’s just me.

You said we had 7...
I’m looking for 2.
I’m not saying Toots is cheap. Far from it. I’ve been loving him since the Ads. You said we have 7…I want to know who those 7 are.
They’re not there are they?
We don't need another Tootoo.
We need another Radulov.

i agree we need a player like Radulov… Radulov himself? i doubt it. i dont think he had many friends on the team before he jumped ship.
All them haters are gone.
Arnott, Sullivan and whoever else.

Because if we had...
7 Downies…we would have 70 more goals and another 140 assists, plus about 1,000 pm and a ton more fights….hmmmm
Sounds like the Ducks….
Downie wouldn't produce in Nashville.

No GB....all is good...
but he said we have 7 Downies.
We dont. We have 1 and a bunch of kids learning. They are gonna be good. Yes they will. But if they get pounded while developing, they are gonna turn into Kalssen…
Do

No you did not.
You said we had 7 Downies.
Name 7 Preds that had 10 goals 20 assists and 100 pm?
Downie was basically the guy who had to stand up since Yzerman put him in that position since he can’t remember that he was protected back in the day when he was in Detroit.
Well now you've crossed the line.
Be respectful when you talk about the Jedi Master. ;) (jk)

Fine, sign some goons for the Admirals……..and sign a scorer for up here.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 9:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Even if we had a legit goon up here, he would only play in 20 games or so. May as well bring up someone from Milwaukee on an as needed basis and not use a one-way contract on a perma scratch. Better yet, re-sign SOB. :)

Our Spending....
according to Capgeek, we’re at $41.2M in spending thus far. Poile says he wants to spend more this year than last, which means ~$52-$54M or $11 – $12M more.
First thing we should do is buy out Lebda. He’s in no ones plans and was simply a sop to get Lombardi’s salary unloaded. We’ll pay $485K this year and next, or stated another way, save $1M right now (and to have him play in MIL is just a waste of money given our strength at D). A buy out on Ledba means we have $12 – $13M to spend.
Agree with SWFP that Stortini is the 7th guy. I’d suggest we resign SOB. That gives us 8 D guys and allows for injuries or concerns with Frankie. If he is completely healthy, it then makes Klein expendable. That’s not so bad…..

Just make to pull salaries from sites like Capgeek, not cap numbers. Martin Erat, for example, is making $6 million this season with a cap hit of $4.5M, and it’s salary that rules the day in Nashville.

Someone else asked it but I didn’t see an answer: is it salary or cap spending that determines the revenue sharing.
Regarding going 0-4 in the NHL Awards, I quote the great Hornqvist: "S**t's gonna happen."
No, payroll I believe
Can’t dig through the CBA right now.
And to be specific, it only effects a particular supplemental round of revenue sharing, not the whole bit.

It evens out I think
there’s more than a few players making below their cap hit this year—Geoffrion, Wilson, Fisher, Hornqvist, etc.
According to other sites, there is a three day buyout period that starts after all the arbitration hearings are finished. That’s the first I’ve heard of that, but if true, it appears we could buy Lebda out.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 10:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
yeah, ive never hear of that either. i doubt the preds are going to flush more $$ down the toilet though. or else why didn’t Toronto buy him out already?
Lebda’s contract is small beans to an organization like the Leafs, they could just as easily buried his contract in the AHL if they wanted to. But in order to take Lombardi’s contract off our hands, we had to take some junk back in return. Or maybe Poile likes Lebda (that would be unfortunate).
Larry Brooks in the NY Post reported about the 3 day buyout period and it was repeated on other sites. Assume it’s true beings no one disputed it.

Callahan
Get me Ryan Callahan! He is the kind of player i wanna see in Nashville.
Frolov is playing in the KHL next season and I believe Boyle re-signed already. Nhlnumbers.com……..it’s your friend for all things cap related. :)
Rangers will likely but Wolski out at the end of the arbitration hearings if they feel they need to, so they have no cap issues to worry about.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 8:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
doesn’t Wolski have the same rap sheet as Zherdev? all polish, no spit? Unless a guy has heart, he’s not going to last long with this team. There’s zero chance a cherry-picker at the blueline gets signed.
There are similarities to Wolski and Zherdev in that department. But guess what, there’s a reason all the good UFA’s and players who were traded moved in the week between the draft and July 1st and others didn’t. Guess which one’s we’re left with?
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 10:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
i understand, but i’m more willing to give ice time to current predators than to either of those two.
We barely have enough NHL forwards to make up 4 lines, signing a Zherdev or Wolski on the cheap has no downside, IMO. I would hope we could do better than either one of them though.

Realistic Possibilites
Stamkos, Semin, Parise are all nice to dream about having, but who do we really have a shot at? Someone we could pay about 4 mil a year and get without depleting our prospect pipeline?
by PredsGuy on Jul 9, 2011 9:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Oh I didn’t mean not trading….just not trading everything.
by PredsGuy on Jul 9, 2011 9:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Oh, there’s plenty of guys in that price range that you could get for very little in return. Hecht, Wolski, Brule to name a few. Interesting thing is, they cost just as much as any of the UFA’s that got signed last week but are less productive.
IMO, Semin is probably a more realistic option at this point than just about any other scenario I can think of right now, and even that is 50/50 at best. So glad we waited so long. :/
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 9:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Believe...lol
Poile says he will do it.
I don’t believe he’s gonna get another top 6, but hell, he signed SK74, so anything is possible…
Semin is a bad move
he has never played a full season. this guy misses serious GP. Anyone that has owned Semin in a fantasy league knows that it would be a bad move. Besides he fights like a girl, and starts too much crap for not being able to hold his own.
Really? Looks like he hasn’t missed any significant time in the past three seasons. By that standard, both Sid and Geno are bad risks due to games missed. And we wouldn’t be bringing him here to fight.
by Grizzledbear on Jul 10, 2011 1:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Really? Looks like he hasn’t missed any significant time in the past three seasons."
per his stat page on the NHL.com he missed 65 man games in his last 4 regular seasons..that comes out to 16.25 missed games a year.
Semin:
10/11-65GP
09/10-73GP
Malkin:
10/11-43GP
09/10-67GP
Crosby:
10/11-41GP
09/10-81GP
So, looks like both Sid and Malkin have missed more games over the past two season than Semin has. Who’d of thunk it?!

I’m thinking of having people take shifts of stating Peks should be traded for a forward…….you would be up 24/7 typing “you can’t say that”. :D
by Grizzledbear on Jul 9, 2011 10:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
maybe we should sign Prince William…. he already looked like most of our forwards and he got as many shots on goal as we do on a power play……
