Day-One Season Ticket Holder, here
This is the first off-season that I’ve spent reading hockey blogs.
My favorite is OTFC, and I’ve learned some good stuff, here, and have been able to keep up with many more of the details that I would have normally missed, during the Summer.
I am curious, though…..
Players come and go…..are bought, sold and traded……..so, each of my authentic Preds sweaters have personalized words, rather than players’ names.
I really like a few players and others pretty much disgust me, for what they are getting paid while OBVIOUSLY underachieving.
However….Poile and Trotz are the constants………..and have been responsible for a HUGE percentage of the success that my team has seen.
I understand if some Preds fans disagree with Poile/Trotz……….but I would really like to know whether each detractor is a season ticket holder OR an occasional attendee OR simply a person who watches the Preds play on TV when they don’t really have much else to do.
I see value in nearly EVERY person’s opinion……….but I can hardly put much weight on a simple/occasional TV fan’s call for Trotz/Poile’s demise……especially under the obvious financial circumstances that the Predator’s organization has always found themselves in.
We are the 30th largest media market…..making our advertising revenues TENS OF MIILIONS of dollars less, per year, than larger market teams…….and this will never change.
We can stay at the midway salary cap, to get an NHL subsidy……sell more tickets and/or raise the ticket prices………..that’s about it.
The higher ticket prices have already forced many season ticket holders to drop seats and sit in cheaper sections…………..and there is a possibility that there are many fans who want to change the team, while not buying tickets, themselves.
Poile and Trotz have brought us this far.
I have always helped to pay their salaries and see THEIR efforts as worthy of support.
I just want to see my hockey team play hard………..and I’m less interested in winning a cup if it means that I can’t afford my season seats to watch it happen.
To make it to the Finals, on our budget, will be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy worth the patience it takes.
STH, fd1. The 2/20 ddeal is the best thing going. I hope my seats dont get too expensive, too soon.

Please clarify some of your statements
It seems like you are saying that only STH are allowed to complain. I hope that’s not what you are saying. FWIW, most of the people who post here are diehard fans who watch as much as they can, pay for the things they can afford to pay for, and are quite knowledgeable about what’s going on. Many are not even in Nashville.
I would rather see us engage in a discussion about the team than start calling people out for not being STH. We all know the Preds have a budget. That budget doesn’t have to be allocated the same way it always has. And if Poile is not the right fit any longer, then it’s okay to think about whether it would help to find someone else, as long as we are respectful and give actual reasons for what we say. If he is no longer able to negotiate with his players, that’s a real concern, and it doesn’t have to have anything to do with how much money he spends, just on what he spends that money on.

Part Predator, part Lightning.
I used to be a STH...
…. so I can trade Pekka any chance I get!!
Everyone can and SHOULD complain………..ALL I was asking is who IS and who is NOT a STH, so that I can see who helps pay the bills versus those who have valid-yet-rhetorical suggestions and fair-weather accusations against Trotz and Poile…….
And I totally agree, and said so, that I really love the discussions, here, more than any other blog.
I’m simply used to hearing many of these same opinions in the concourses and vomitoriums of the Bridgestone, before and during and after games…….so one knows that the fan has spent a few bucks to be there.
I have upper-level seats and spend a larger percentage of my income on my tickets than anyone I’ve net in 13 years. I work nearly 7 full days a week in a small retail business…..for 42 years.
Everyone here, and everywhere, should voice their opinions……they all have weight…….and are as valid as they worth.
ALLLLL I am is a STH…I’m no expert……….and I surely never talk like one.
I simply have an opinion that Poile and Trotz are uniquely skilled at creating and maintaining my team and keeping it here, in Nashville.
My original post is in response to several posters who want Trotz and Poile canned.
Our team……….. the players……….changes every year and I love the threads about each player’s strengths and weaknesses.
Poile and Trotz are NOT above criticism……but to be one of only five other teams to make the playoffs as often as we have, these past several years, proves that Poile/Trotz CAN and DO “squeeze blood out of a turnip”, as they say, in the South.
I don’t see too many people here who want to see Trotz or Poile fired, but they are certainly open to criticism.

P.S.
How can we be 30th in media size when there are 7 teams in Canada?
Was about to make this point, glad someone else did. Even if the Canadian teams did count the Nashville metro area is larger than the Edmonton and Winnipeg Metro areas so we wouldn’t be last, we may be larger than other markets as well but I’m not entirely sure.
but then again im not a STH so what do it know? :p

Nashville is 44th in media market share.
That doesn’t translate to “hockey market share” however.
Plus...
The Rangers, Devils and Isles share ONE market
Ducks and Kings share one market.
Thanks
Couldnt find the exact number but I didn’t really try to hard either.
And this is a very good point about the shared markets.

Only Buffalo is smaller than Nashville
…. and I guess the Isles semi-share a market (Nassau-Suffolk has it’s own market, I guess?)

I was referring to the size of the NATIONAL media market, here in Nashville…..and did not suggest the market size of only NHL teams.
Sorry, my bad, we are #47 on this chart:
http://www.radio-media.com/markets/main.html
….but #30 on this one:
http://www.proadvance.com/topmediamarkets.html
Here’s a link to Forbes’ pages on the NHL teams and their revenues.
http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/31/hockey-valuations-10_New-York-Rangers_315381.html
I had always heard the Rangers media deal, being owned by MSG network, was worth 100 million, while the Preds’ media deals came to a few million……….it appears to be true, from these pages.
Income doesn’t qualify anyone…….high/low.

In that case, keep in mind that the Predators, unlike every other NHL team, rely on individual season ticket holders to fill the building rather than corporate sponsors. STHs are, in a word, an indispensable part of the team’s economic survival. Your opinions are no doubt highly informed and cogent. But pal, remember they put their money where their mouths are.

Priorities = sux!
My son was due last Nov. 21. Checked the date against the schedule as soon as it was released. Luckily, it was during a road trip. Unluckily, he was born Nov. 1st. Luckily, it was during another road trip. His first game was twelve days later, a shootout win vs. Chicago. His next two games were also shootouts. He finished the season 21-11. Pretty good record, I think.

God, some of you “non season tic holders” are a little too sensitive. Plus, why in the hell would you let it be known on a message board you DO NOT have season tics?
This is what letusprey stated:
“I see value in nearly EVERY person’s opinion……….but I can hardly put much weight on a simple/occasional TV fan’s call for Trotz/Poile’s demise……especially under the obvious financial circumstances that the Predator’s organization has always found themselves in.”
It is a simple AND TRUE statement. It is not belittling an opinion, but stating the obvious…Your opinion has value, but it does not carry the weight of someone who has sweat in the team.
Please attempt to understand the LAST SENTENCE in the above snippet of LETUSPREY’s post…..If you cannot comperhend it, you need to ask someone.
It is common business practice that your CUSTOMERS, REPEAT CUSTOMERS come first. But I’ll state it clearer: Put your damn money where your mouth is. If you want the Preds viable long term, if you don’t want the discussions about who is expendable, you want them to spend to the cap, you want the top 6 forward, then buy a freakin tic package.
Now, I have to read a bunch of whiny ass non tic holders jump on a person who has supported the team from DAY DAMN 1. Not in my book.
So cut out the cheesburgers, the movies and buy tickets…..Become part of the solution, not a whiny ass complainer we have a problem.

I think this oversimplifies things quite a bit. If you have the money to buy season tickets, then do so, by all means. No one here has said anything bad about season ticket holders or their priorities.
But please, don’t expect people to feel less than slighted by the assertion that their opinions are not worth as much as someone else’s because they must put their money towards other things, things that are likely not “Cheeseburgers and movies” but rather necessities..

I think what Don was trying to say is that people need to understand that to the Franchise, a non ticket purchaser’s opinion is of little importance. It bears some merit, because they are always looking for ways to increase ticket sales, but it has no where near the impact of STH.
We, as fans, should value each other’s opinion even if we do not agree with it.
“The greatest compliment that was ever paid me was when one asked me what I thought, and attended to my answer.”
The tendency to whining and complaining may be taken as the surest sign symptom of little souls and inferior intellects. ~ Lord Jeffrey
I believe the franchise appreciates the opinion of everyone. I believe LETUSPREYS statement was blown way out of proportion by a few who got their collective feelings hurt. But instead of reason, I have people posting they will drop out of college, move and buy tics….wow.
But, I know when the Preds are looking for opinions, they turn to the season tic holder first. As I said, it is a common business practice. It does not make the opinion of a non tic holder any less valuable.
I’m simply asking the non tic holders to be part of the solution. Buying a tic is a part of it and pardon my opinion, but don’t tell me if a priority is the Preds, even a college student can find a few bucks to buy a tic here and there…the Preds think so or they would not have the college nites. The Preds think so or there wouldn’t be the Daily’s Tues nite food stand. The Preds think so or they wouldn’t have limited 10.00 tic.
heck, the Preds are doing thier part to get you to the games, do your part.
Become part of the solution, not a whiny ass complainer we have a problem."
So it is OK to complain about people not buying tickets, but not OK to complain about the direction of the team if you do not buy tickets? I think that is where you and LetusPrey are running into trouble here.
This forum is for discussing the predators. I do not remember seeing anything upon joining that required proof of ticket purchase.

Especially considering that his first sentence was about there somehow being shame in not being a STH.
I presume people on duty, in college, with late shift jobs, with lower paying jobs or with kids should be ashamed.

I know sarcasm doesnt translate well over the internet but I assumed most would realize that is what was meant by my post about dropping out.
Also, you are assuming that myself and people in similar situations don’t go to games at all. I have been to around 15 both of the last 2 seasons and consider myself fortunate to be able to attend that many. I realize that the Preds as a team value STH opinions more than mine or others who go to a few games or none at all. But here on this site I don’t see how me not being a STH matters at all and that is what caused all this discussion today.
by Joel Ward is my Homeboy on Aug 8, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
It doesn’t matter….But a few got their panties in a wad over what is considered the truth. That is what caused this discussion today. People who cannot deal with what is simply true.
I give more value to opinions of those with skin in the game…what the hell is wrong with that?
LETUSPREY made the comment that the occasional TV fan’s opinion(or something like that) does not carry as much value. I can’t think of any endeavor where this is not true. When did the truth become subject to ridicule?
I’d say everyone here, because they are here, care and do all they can for the team. If that is one solitary tic, great. If it is a suite, great.
But one statement was blown out of context by what everyone here practices every day on thier job, with thier kids…everyone places more value on an opinion when it comes from someone with skin in the game.
Again
why should it matter to another fan if I am a season ticket holder or not?? I dont see where it is relevant between fans.
The tendency to whining and complaining may be taken as the surest sign symptom of little souls and inferior intellects. ~ Lord Jeffrey
Does the occasional TV fan really hang out and discuss hockey everyday on OtF? LETUSPREY has been a STH from day 1 and just got here this year… seems suspect to think that a bunch of us just tune in to a few games a year and then scream FIRZ THEM DAMZ COACHES!

No
but they might start spouting stupid stuff on Facebook! :)
So....
I want to see 25 of you STHs go up to Cirragan and tell them your opinions of what the team should do with DP and BT. They’ll listen (about 12 seconds worth) and after you leave, they will roll their eyes and laugh.
They’ll listen to you (probably do nothing about though) the differences of Dippin Dots vs TCBY or Bud vs Miller vs Coors…
Now see how much YOUR opinion matters to the franchise. (Same as mine, diddly)
To this board, my opinion may not matter to you or him or her, but to give a reason as being a STH or buying single game tickets or just watching on TV… that is what irks me about his statement. That screams Red Wings executive seating (i.e. the entire lower bowl of JLA). I escaped that crap and thought of supporting a blue collar type of team with blue collar fans.
Guess I was wrong about that!
Not wrong...
Both sides of this discussion have good and bad points. I’m a STH but not since Day 1 when I was just out of high school and going to college full time and saving every penny for an engagement ring. I support them now more than ever, but things are getting tighter to where I might not be able to in the future. We are all Pred fans in here..well most of us…and every opinion is valid, otherwise I wouldn’t have people discussing with me about my views on the Weber situation or Poile not adding a top 6 scorer since…well you get the idea….
Let’s leave it as all are welcome. Whether it be betting on the sport, buying season tickets, half season, flex packs or $10 day of tickets or unable to attend because of financial or obligational restraints at least we have a team to bicker and discuss and fret and gush over. I’ll bet that those on the Thrasher sites would be happy to have the back and forth over their team like we have on a daily basis.

When you are at a live taping of SNL, you can’t always see the action, but have to watch it on a monitor, and you don’t always have the best line of sight to the monitor, THEREFORE, the TV fan’s opinion that Justin Timberlake was hilarious in that Liquorville sketch, might carry more weight than the person who was unable to see it.

My sentiments exactly.
It was pretty much a “I hear your opinion, but I think nothing much of it” kind of statement.
And I like cheeseburgers.
hmmm
So cut out the cheesburgers, the movies and buy tickets
i guess i could skip on some student loan payments to save up the money for a ticket package.
but all this discussion on the value of STH versus people with more pressing financial concerns has me wondering who may have more value.
1) a person who spends $2,000 on tickets. or
2) a person that is part of a loyal group of fans who watch or listen to every game, which convinces business’s to spend more on advertisement revenue on the team. (if every fan were STHers this team would have less money since there would be no revenue from media advertisements.)

No need to do this….But if you enjoy the Preds and want the team to succeed, simply find a way to buy a tic or two…..I sacrifice to do it, so skipping a cheesburger couild actually get you a 10.00 tic……

Caustin, I believe you are intelligent enough to budget for a few games. My family sacrifices by “not eating at the wrong places” and eating at home. Way back when, in college, I got by on bread and peanut butter.
Don’t tell me it can’t be done, I know it can. All I’m getting now is a bunch of ridiculous comments and grief from fans who don’t seem to be willing to sacrifice.
Again, all i’m asking is be part of the solution, not part of the problem and its fair tio ask because this IS a Preds message board.
You just dont get it
How is someone who cannot afford a ticket to the game, part of the problem? These people are fans just as you and I are. You sound like an elitist pig to tell someone, whom you nothing about, to sacrifice and buy a ticket.
Clueless.

A few games does not a STH make. I get to the games I can, I watch the rest on TV. And I am not ashamed of my priorities. Furthermore, I have valid opinions, regardless of how much I spend on the team. You never asked about anyone’s situation, let alone mine. Instead, you said that “non-tic holders” (which in context seemed to mean season tickets, not single game tickets) were being too sensitive and that they should stop buying frivolous things and buy season tickets instead, if they wanted the right to complain. I respectfully disagree with both your premises and the logic you used to reach your conclusions.

"Plus why in the hell would you let it be known on a message board you DO NOT have season tics"
I’m pretty sure that not owning season tickets is not a social stigma.
So I ask again, since when does the amount of money one person spends on something make their opinion more valid than someone else’s?
Not everyone is single without kids.
This site
was developed for Predator fans to discuss what was going on with the team. You cannot define a fan based simply on the purchase of tickets. I drive over 200 miles one way to watch this franchise, and make it to as many games as I can.
Now the ownership may value a STH holder’s opinion more than mine, but we as fans should not place the same level of scrutiny to each others comments. It doesn’t matter to me how many games you attended.
A team’s fan base covers a wide range of people with differing economic situations. Many who may never get to see a game live, but they are just as much a fan as you and I. They have every right to have their opinion heard on the matters as we do.

No one said a non tic holders opinion is not valuable. No one said someone who never bought a tic can’t be a fan of the team. No one stated fans are needed of teams who have never graced the Bridgestone arena. There are many avenues of support. Buying merchandise is an avenue and if the finances are simply not there, no one understands this more than me. I sacrifice some things to buy tics. I also believe, whether a student, a single mom or a millioniare, we find ways to spend money on what we enjoy…..So if you enjoy the Preds, find a way to buy a tic or two.
But this was a discussion on which of the big 3 is expendable…and one of the answers is to buy tics. So my advise to the non tic holders wanting Poile? Trotz head…..Practice “don’t ask, don’t tell”.
and one of the answers is to buy tics
The key word there is “one”.
The tendency to whining and complaining may be taken as the surest sign symptom of little souls and inferior intellects. ~ Lord Jeffrey
On a message board, it is the primary answer….But please, a good exercise would be a list of avenues to help the team. What are your suggestions.
How about
buying merchandise
support the local sponsors
It cost me as much to come to 10 games a year as it does for you to buy season tickets.
So do not tell me you are making more of a financial investment to support this team than I am. You have no idea what any of these people’s financial situations are.
The tendency to whining and complaining may be taken as the surest sign symptom of little souls and inferior intellects. ~ Lord Jeffrey
I don’t believe I said that…..I believe we have a bunch of people who read LETUSPREY and jumped to the worse case senario. If you are doing what you can, then you are part of the solution.
The Preds...
are a business.
Keeping the team afloat is not my responsibility, nor is it the responsibility of any other fan, regardless of how many tickets they buy or don’t buy.
not according to your earlier post
If I am doing what i can do by buying a shirt and watching the team on FSTN then, according to your earlier post, I am part of the problem.

I hold his opinion to lower regards because of the actual opinion.
I don’t give a crapola if he is a STH or not.

I meant tot the franchise.
all of our opinions should be valuable to each other. Discussion sparks creative thought process and improvements.

The Official Hierarchy of Importance
1. Day 1 STH - always right, all the time.
2. Post Day 1 Full STHs - Usually right, unless trumped by a Day 1 STH. I mean, you should have been a STH on Day 1, I seriously don’t care if you were 11 years old or lived in another state or didn’t even like hockey at the time. Get a job, deadbeat.
3. Half Game STHs – But they’re generally only half right.
4. Quarter Game STHs – Partially to blame for our failing education system.
5. Single game ticket buyers - Probably spend the rest of their money on drugs.
6. People who go to games for free – Love to mooch. Probably also steal from the Jerry’s Kids change jars at gas stations. Probably also actually watch the entire Jerry Lewis telethon, call in to make pledges and then never send the check.
7. People who only watch the games on TV - The lowest form of human life. These people long for the days of the glow puck and take Eklund seriously.

Hey Patten, quick question...
I am a season ticket holder for the Milwaukee Admirals. Paul Fenton, Assistant GM for the Predators, is our GM.
Everything Nashville does directly effects my team in Brewtown.
Where am I on that list?
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
I believe the Ads have their own hierarchy.
1. Full STH.
2. Got tickets free when I bought Brewer’s tickets
etc.
I beg to differ sir...
Players drafted, called up, sent down, rehab assignments by Nashville, play here.
“The road to Nashville goes though Milwaukee”
Pekka, Shea, Suter, Tootoo, Blum, Geoffrion, O’ Reilly, etc. have played here.
I want a say dammit!
:-)
What happens on the ice...stays on the ice...
Madness!!!!
I think the whole STH thing is madness here… but I agree with the original guy who said that we can’t blame Trotz and Poile for the Preds still being a smaller market team and unable to afford all of the big 3 and a competitive team to put around them. I think the organization is doing a good job expanding, but Rome wasn’t built in a day… if one of the Big 3 has to go, that sucks, but its business.
If we signed all three of them and had all this money tied up in them, some people on here would have a fit about how badly managed the team was when we didn’t have the money to spend on some offensive firepower.
I know the off season sucks, but come on people, let’s hold it together!!
clap clap clapclap clap LETS GO PREDATORS. (see? That made me feel better already!)
There's only two kinds of teams in the NHL: Predators and prey.
STH vs. non STH
On the one hand, a STH’s opinion may carry more weight in that, like being a shareholder in a company, it’s their money helping to keep the business afloat. But, that doesn’t necessarily make the quality of their opinion better than anyone elses. We all know people who go to a lot of games and scratch our heads at their description of what they just watched.
So as far as a hockey board like this goes, the validity of the opinion is what’s important, not the quality of their tickets.

OOOOOOOPS !!
200 posts later……….
All I was suggesting is that the game and the players are fair-game for any/all fans and non-fans, even.
I also suggested that calling for the firing of Trotz AND Poile, as it has been suggested by some, be simply stated and followed by whether the opinion comes from a STH or ticket buyer of any type……..or casual fan.
If you are a casual fan and want such a drastic change in the CORE of our team, then, please suggest who else could do better………with as few tickets sold and such a small market to gain advertising moneys from.
I’m sorry if anyone became uncomfortable with my suggestion.
Thanks for your comments, though !
I’ve learned a lot, tonight.
But what if..........
that casual fan was very involved with hockey, be it as a coach at the high school level, running hockey clinics or something like that, and had the opinion that we should make a change in a certain area of the team? That would be worth listening to at the very least, IMO, certainly more than a STH who yells “shoot the puck” everytime a player has the puck.
Just my two cents. :)

I’m sorry, and I don’t mean to keep this whole thing going now that it’s died down, but I fail to see any connection whatsoever between the purchase of any kind of ticket and the validity of an opinion. As long as reasons are given to support people’s opinion, we should be willing to consider it. We can evaluate those reasons and agree or disagree, but we shouldn’t require proof of payment before listening. If you are saying that there’s a difference between the knowledge level of those who keep up with the team and those who kinda sorta sometimes watch a game every now and then but don’t have that much exposure, then say that. No need to bring $$ into the equation.
If you like DP and BT, then by all means, express that opinion and give reasons for it. [In my best teacher voice:] What have they done that you like? Why are they better than alternatives? Be specific and give examples. [end pedantry] Then sit back and watch the fireworks.

Yeah, but you’d carry that sign if it annoyed me, I’m sure. ;)
I don’t actually think he’s more important than the wonder twins, but I do think he brings a lot more to this team than we could replace in a trade, while Webs or Sutes would bring closer to their value. And I luuuuuv watching Peks, too. He makes me smile. It just gets me going when folks say Pekka’s “replaceable.” He’s not. He’s extraordinary and goalies like him don’t grow on trees. Even more, it’s a seriously bad idea to let him go before Lindback has a chance to mature. If I have my way, we’ll keep all of them.
