Tuesday's notes: Brendan Shanahan's dropping the hammer
Brendan Shanahan has loomed as the largest figure on the NHL stage this preseason, setting a new standard not just in terms of how severely the league dishes out suspensions for dangerous hits, but by providing an unmatched level of clarity and transparency as to how those decisions are made. For years now, the opening weeks of the season have been dominated by talk of cheap shots and the lack of interest by the league in stopping such hits, but at long last, change may finally be in the air.
So follow after the jump as Shanny dishes out another pair of penalties, and looks to have another up for consideration...

a red wing to root for
i not only like the hammer coming down, but i like the up front explanation. getting called out to all in an in your face way as to why you are a cheap shot cheater is great!
shame-shame ...
is it now shan-shan, everybody knows your name?
Good. It's about time!
Great to see these strong suspensions, especially for repeat offenders, and especially in Pre-season games. How many times have late or egregiosly dirty hits cost a player a portion or the rest of a season(s). Savard and Crosby come to mind. It is now time to get these guys out of the game. Cooke and Avery come to mind.
Toots
I just hope Tootoo stays in control. These suspensions could really hurt, and I feel like he gets blamed for dirty hits though they really aren’t.
TN Sports fan in Hoosier Country....
Shanny has been pretty clear in how each of the hits that drew suspensions were violations and cleared a couple of other hard hits that fell withing the rules. The thing that may bite Toots is his suspension history.

According to the CBA...
…. the definition of a repeat offender is a suspension/fine within 18 months.
SOB was the only NSH player last year to receive a suspension.
Hornqvist the only one to get a fine.
I don’t remember any suspensions or fines for the 2009-10 season.
Lombardi
Glad he’s doing well, but sad he’s not doing well here.

As expected, the Sabres demoted a few players in order to get cap compliant. No Boyes for us! (Was never happening anyway.

Transparency, Badassery & FanTASTIC Hair
Will always be appreciated by yours truly and I don’t mean for any of that to sound trite and/or plastic.
Shanny is doing me proud and I hope he will prove/continue to be an X’er trailblazer whose chutzpah will inspire players and whose impact will hopefully change the game for the better in the longrun. You don’t have to agree with his decisions but there’s an awful lot to like about his method. Yippee yay already.
