Friday's notes: Doughty deal delivers the dough

I think that Doughty got what I thought he would
Now the question is what it means for our big 2. So does Weber get $8 mil and Suter with $6.5 – 7 mil? That is where I may see them fitting in. Suter and Weber are elite players. If the Preds want to sit at the big boy table then they have to act like a big boy. : )
Weber: $8M. Suter $6.5M. Rinne: $6M
Not that these numbers are wrong but they will vary according to contract length. Suter could easily command over 7M for a short contract. Hell, in free agency he will probably make more than Doughty. I could see him signing 3 – 5 for closer to 8M. UFA vs RFA…

you know me, bye bye suter.
suter has to shoot more to keep the defense honest from cheating towards weber. i want more blocked shots and hits from him too.
But hits and blocked shots aren’t his game. I want him to play his game, rather than try to become a second Weber.

I know you. :)
..but I don’t think you take into consideration Suter’s poise against elite forwards and his ability to move the play out of the zone. He just makes it look easy.
by Marcus Newman on Sep 30, 2011 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions
i know i’m alone in my opinion, here and everywhere else. i can admit to being hard headed too. suter and weber both were not our 2 pk guys in on ice time, so neither plays against the top pp of the other teams. i’ve been told suter has good positioning. i don’t know how to measure that. i’m not saying suter is bad, or even average. the kid is good, but elite is not how i would describe him. maybe he should be a forward? good puck mover, defensively responsible, doesn’t hit or block shots or shoot. didn’t scott walker go from D to forward?
You are right that they don’t get the PK time but, you typically won’t find elite players on any team that play the PK regularly because it can get you gassed so easily. When you are expecting Weber and Suter to give you 25+ minutes per game, you don’t necessarily want them out there on regular PK shifts.
Suter is a “complete” defensemen because of 4 things:
1. he plays the top pairing against elite forwards and comes out on top on most shifts (you cannot overlook or diminish the value of this)
2. he can move and maintain the puck up-ice better than any other defenseman on our roster, including Shea. (puck moving D)
3. he is excellent in his own zone, in the corners, and in front of the net (stay at home D)
4. he consistently produces offensively (offensive D-man)
He does all of this without a heavy slapper or driving guys into the boards. that’s probably the reason he doesn’t stand out to some people. He is not flashy. He is poised. He is also effective (incredibly in my mind) and makes very few mistakes.
This is just my observation though. I am admittedly as much or more of a homer for the guy as you are unimpressed with him. :)

The thing is
it’s hard to see how we can afford not to do it. And, like Marcus, I expect Suter to get more than that. But I also kind of expect Rinne to be more like $5.5, but who knows what he’ll get offered. The goalie market’s so weird right now.
Question for our CBA experts out there: Are other teams allowed to start negotiations with pending UFAs before July 1?

Thanks Dirk.
So either one of Suter or Rinne could decide to wait until after July 1 just to explore their options, then.

You got that right! Thanks a lot Philly! They should trade Hartz back to us to make up for the Bryzgalov deal…

According to CapsGeek….check out these crazy numbers for 2011-2012.
VOKOUN 1,500,000
HILLER 4,500,000
PRICE 3,000,000
THOMAS 5,000,000
MILLER 6,250,000
LUONGO 6,716,000
BRYZGALOV 10,000,000
What a spread! i guess Rinne would have to fall in the middle there somewhere which would be around 6 million, and of course, there’s contract length to contend with.

Keep in mind, though, that the real spread on those contracts is between Lou’s 6.7 and Price’s 3. Both Bryz and Vokoun were unique (bizarre?) situations that don’t really set any kind of precedent. Also, everyone but Lou hates Lou’s contract, so there’d be a fight over that set-up.
IF the GMs keep their heads, the market price for someone of Rinne’s caliber is in the 5-6M range between Thomas and Miller. It’s just that there’s no guarantee that they’ll keep their heads (and on Rinne’s side of the equation, no guarantee that they’ll lose them.)

They should trade Hartz back to us to make up for the Bryzgalov deal…
Please note, if the Preds are willing to trade a high draft choice or young minor league D in exchange for Hartnell, BSH would be very pleased.
In the fanpost cited above, some of OTF wanted the Flyers to take salary back. No can do.
Hunter Pence will not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither does Carlos Beltran.
I can’t help that I have a semi-inappropriate man-crush on Hartnell. …and I’ll give you any minor league D you want for him right now.
My favorite part about that old thread? My quote:
I personally think the solution will be that you guys end up shipping Carter or Richards to someone else though. I can’t picture the Preds taking on either of those contracts.
I think it was almost a full 2 weeks before it happened though. :)
by Marcus Newman on Sep 30, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I would think the number for Rinne would have the most flexibility. Goalies don’t seem to be in demand as much as elite defensemen unless your Philly or Vancouver and just want to burn a lot of cash on an “elite” goalie.

the part of this that gives me pause, though, is that there hasn’t been anyone like Rinne on the market—proven, elite talent just entering his prime. There may be teams willing to pay a lot for him. His situation is the most uncertain, for both him and the team.

In an awesome Pred world
In a perfect world we sign all three. But I just do not see it happening in Nashville unless they all three agree to take a little less to keep the duo together. Not to mention the push in the media on the “younger” talent that we have coming up. We lose someone. We might as well get ready for it and put our big boy panties on and suck it up. Its the Pred way. I love this team no matter what they do! Not that I always agree with it.

And
I hate to say it guys, but I would hate to see Rinne go out of the three.
Oh wait…are we back in this discussion again? Oops!

I believe it’s possible to keep them all. Painful, but possible. There would have to be a lot of hard decisions made and some increased investment from the ownership group, but I think there’s enough of a possibility that I’m not writing it off completely.
So, prepare for the worst, but still, I think there is some reasonable basis to hope for the best.

I would love to see all 3 signed and truly made the core of this team. Unfortunately, we’re gonna be stuck with the high dollar, mediocrity of numbers 10 through 11 – two guys who make big bucks and can’t even keep letters on their chests. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see these guys have stellar seasons, but I think their high dollar, long term contracts and inability to become a force to be reckoned with have caused DP to become hesitant in the contract department. Lets face it, DP wants “bargain” players.

he cannot come back this year anyways...
… he’s already played games in the KHL.
Close, but not quite
There’s a rule in the NHL CBA that once the NHL regular season has started, someone who’s playing in a pro league outside North America would need to go through waivers before playing in the NHL.
So theoretically, he could come back sometime in the next week.

The BIG 2 err 3!
I know my opinion means squat! But of the 3, I would put it as 1 – Weber, 2 – Suter, 3 – Rinne. We have had VERY GOOD luck with developing goalies with a couple in waiting now. Lets keep Batman and Robin, Long Ranger and Tonto, Ben and Jerry, or whatever you wanna call them together as long as we can!! They are Nashville!
Buck and Roy? Flatt and Scruggs? Johnny and June?
World Wide Weber.

Get these guys signed!
All I know is the Preds look cheap. Even the Islanders have locked up their best players long term – Tavares, Grabner, Streit. etc. We can’t even compete money wise with those losers? The hockey media around the league will skewer the Preds all year about not having the money. Fans have stepped up how about the organization?
