A video message to Ryan Suter: "Please Sign"

Photo

When millions of dollars and public pledges of commitment aren't enough to get Ryan Suter to sign a contract, what else can the Nashville Predators and their fans do to get him locked up? Negotiating a long-term extension for Suter has been at the top of GM David Poile's to-do list all season long. Team ownership has said the money is there, and Poile has the paperwork ready to go, but Suter, who would stand at the head of the 2012 free agent class, seems to be waiting things out.

So what's it going to take to get a deal done?

After the jump, one family of Predators fans rolls out the big guns...

Star-divide

OTF reader The Pred That Rides dropped the video found below in our Game Thread the other night, and in an email conversation, shared the story of how it came about:

My wife and I have really gotten into the Preds over the past year. We have really grown to like the play of Suter as well as many of the guys, but Sutes is the family favorite. My wife went as far as to go way out of her way to meet Suter and Legwand at Sport Sseasons in Franklin when they were having their community days. Of course after meeting him, my wife liked him even more. So we were talking about the possibilty of him being traded. Neither of us can really bear the throught of losing any of the Big 3 (especially Sutes), but we were discussing possibilities. One of us said out loud "We HAVE to sign him" ( Suter). and my 18-month-old daughter repeated it. We werent sure what she said so we asked her again. and she said "Please sign". I had just gotten the family custom jerseys for Christmas, so we slapped it on her and prayed that she would say it again. She did and we filmed it, as it seemed to sum up exactly what we wanted to say.

So prepare for a blast of double-barreled cuteness. Who knows, this little lady may have a brilliant career in sports management ahead of her...

Dirk, in your mind...

Do we essentially have to trade one to keep the other? Meaning, trade one for some legit scorers/future scorers by using one of our two biggest bargaining chips. Or do we have enough in trade value elsewhere (not $$$)? It seems that both are hesitiant to sign extensions when there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever have a good goal scorer. Or is there more to their reluctance? It just seems that money isn’t the issue (as in, getting a market deal).

by NashVol_PredHead on Jan 11, 2012 10:12 AM EST reply actions

At this point, the onus is on the players, and who knows exactly what their thinking is. The money should be there to sign both of them, but if, as has been speculated, they’re waiting to see if the Preds can build a contender around them, I don’t think you can say they’ve done anything over the last several months to convince them. This is a decent team, but hardly a Cup contender.

well, that's a conundrum, isn't it?

how, exactly, in your view is David Poile to build a Cup contender around guys that haven’t committed to being built around, hmmmm? Do please be specific.

The two big holes we’ve talked about quite a bit are for a top-quality forward and strong 2nd-pair defenseman. Neither have been addressed, either over the summer or during the season so far.

if the financial parameters for Suter & Weber are pretty much understood, then that shouldn’t get in the way of making those moves. But (likely for many different reasons) they haven’t been done.

Is there any way for the fans to collectively show Suter their support in the hopes that the showing will help entice him to sign? If he wants to team to be better then he should talk his buddy Parise into signing here as the exact same sentiments are starting to emanate from Newark. (Hmm, almost sounds like collusion)

I’m willing to try just about anything at this point because the conventional method doesn’t seem to be working. Maybe we can have the arena break into a simultaneous Sign Suter Sign chant. I dunno.

I think

Parise and Suter will both be taking their talents to South Beach Fort Lauderdale.

The fans collectively are doing things….like selling out the barn.

I don’t like the position poile is in. To get the forward it appears suter and weber are waiting, probably has to happen in the offseason. We can’t wait on suter until the offseason, imho, even if we trade for a forward at the deadline.

My thought is we will trade Suter, sign the forward and a good d man this offseason, sign Weber for another year and make our run. Maybe there are other logical avenues to approach this, but we can’t allow Suter to walk with no player compensation.

Let’s trade both and take the $15 million it would take to sign them both and get some other capable defensemen. We don’t need anyone on the team that has one foot out the door. Sign or move on. Let’s quit dragging this out.

That was so freaking cute! I hope Sutes thinks so. He is my wife’s favorite player also. I may miss out on some games if he leaves.

goal scoring

does the fact ellis and josi have 4 goal in significantly less time for suter to have 5, lessen the amount poile is willing to pay?

by predwheels on Jan 11, 2012 10:52 AM EST reply actions

Ellis show potential, but as Trotz has said....

6 games is too small a sample size. Ellis shows a lot of promise, especially on the PP. however he is only getting 12-14 mins per night, less than half of an average Suter night. I think Ellis still has to really prove himself defensively, and a crummy Hurricane team and weakened Avalanche team really don’t show us much. Suter is THE all around defenseman and unfortunately there is no replacement for him currently in our system. Others, like Ellis can replace part of what he does, but not the whole package.

by GoPreds00 on Jan 11, 2012 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

i’m just saying that suter’s goal scoring has almost been eclipsed by 2 guys who have hardly played in the nhl and he is one of the top pp guys. does blum have more goals? suter is MUCH better than the rookies defensively.

To Hell with Suter.........

………..if he doesn’t wanna sign. I got a pretty good feeling that he’d gone at the trade deadline. And the same goes for Weber. But let’s get a mountain of cash for both of them. If they wanna go, let them go.

Hmmm I wonder how come we’re not competitive for a Cup according to those two. Hmmmm maybe cause we lose in the first round every year? Why is that? Hmmmmmmmmm cause we play defense or bust hockey? Maybe we lose cause we invest too much energy in defensemen? What else……hmmmmmmm…..how bout the fact that we’ve had the same coach the entire time? Funny how Lane Lambert comes in and within 1 game we’re #2 in the NHL on the PP ain’t it? Maybe let these two clowns go, hire Lambert as the coach and see what happens! I’m not hugely on the fire Trotz bandwagon, but a fact is a fact is a fact.

do weber and suter blame themselves

if the preds are a defensive first team and these are our top defenseman, do they first have to look inward, personal responsibility, to think if they do everthing to be cup contenders.

by predwheels on Jan 11, 2012 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

There's so much there

and so little of it makes sense.
The fact that Lambert can coach PP doesn’t mean he could do any better with this team than Trotz. Mitch Korn is a goalie god. That doesn’t mean he should be coaching the whole team.
It may be that the team has to switch from a defense first mindset if the Stanley Cup is the goal, but that will take an almost complete turnover of our forwards. Wilson, Smith and maybe Toots could stay. That’s going to take WAY more than one season and a lot of cash that will not be nearly as available after we blow up the team and start losing.

by Melissa Vanderpool Wallace on Jan 11, 2012 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

Coupla points:

1. What has Trotz coached us to? One trip to the second round of the playoffs in 12 years? So to me, if anything is clear, its the fact that Trotz can’t coach his way / implement a system that gets us deep into the playoffs. Or even close to deep.
2. Trotz does more with less? He lets guys go that thrive in other systems: Peverley, Ryan Jones, Hamhuis, Santorelli? I would argue that he does the least with the most.

That’s going to take WAY more than one season and a lot of cash that will not be nearly as available after we blow up the team and start losing.

If Suter and Weber leave, which I believe they both will, then that is EXACTLY the predicament we will find ourselves in. The smart strategy will be to get as much in return as we possible can, even if it means that we get a new coach. I’m not saying that Lambert is the answer, but I am saying that Trtoz has not proven that he is….in 12 years. Fact is, we added NOBODY in FA this offseason, yet our PP has gone from 25-ish to 2nd in the NHL. That ability has been there all this time, but Trotz has not been able to find it.

I’m just sayin’ if it looks like a duck and quacks like one………….

why does the Lambert PP mean he is better than Trotz? So far he has only shown that he is an improvement over Peterson, the guy who was in charge of the pp.

Where does this notion that Lambert is behind the PP success come from? I don’t recall seeing it reported anywhere that he’s responsible, and at the practices I’ve attended, Trotz has worked with the PP.

Guess that makes you an insider?

One new coach.

Our PP goes from mid-20s to #2. Trotz said he was in charge of the PP last year PERSONALLY.

By my math, that makes Lambert responsible. And flyalder agrees with me (see posting that you responded to). It waddles and quacks Dirk.

So would I

But neither has a ton of points either Dirk. They’re both hovering around at a halfa pointa game, so it’s not like they’re Teemu Selanne or Hank Sedin out there, right?

When you watch the games, and we’re on the PP, do you see the same crap you saw last year? Dump and chase the puck, NOTHING but #6 cannon fire, no one-timers on cross ice passes? Our PP in NO WAY resembles that of a year ago. Not even close.

Just sayin’.

Miss you bro-man.

How come Trotz allowed the team to be so complacent as to have incompetent coaches for special teams? I, much like you, would argue that our poor special teams play has been a MAJOR limitation to our playoff success.

Bring in a new, competent coach and all of a sudden we’re #2 in the NHL…with nobody new. I’d call that an indictment on Trtoz. He never tried to become better because he kept the same crappy assistants for year and years and years. I’m AM saying that this suggests maybe Trotz is not the coach to take us to the next level, which is where Suter and Weber purportedly want to be.

are we really mad at Weber and Suter….. I mean, they are just doing what all of us want. They want the owners to get some scoring and show that this team is going to compete for the cup…. and that’s what we all want! Their desire carries more weight then ours, so I am glad they are trying to finally get owner ship to nut up and shut up! and if they leave, then that’s on the owners and GM for being all talk. So Sutes and Webs, KEEP ON THEM AND GET US TO COMPETE!!!!!!!
