Wednesday's notes: Stop SOPA & PIPA

Look, I understand why illicit video stream sites are bad, but SOPA & PIPA are lousy ways to fight them.

Many leading sites on the internet are going black today in protest of SOPA & PIPA, the proposed laws designed to protect intellectual property, but are poorly designed and could cause tremendous harm to innocent website operators. For example, the move I made here this season to prohibit the sharing of links to video streaming sites for Preds games is related to this movement, which could allow a rights holder to get any site shut down for providing links to such streams, whether that was done by the editorial staff, or simply a user sharing something in the comments.

Check out Google's End Piracy, Not Liberty page for more information about these bills.

Great to see

you acknowledging the subject, Dirk. This is a serious issue for anyone who owns, works for, or regularly views any web sites. These laws are vaguely worded and could have a serious impact on any website, especially those that allow user interactions such as commenting, editing, or posting stories.

Facebook, youtube, wikipedia, reddit, otf, and thousands of other sites could be shut down if these acts were made into laws.

I don't see it.

I don’t see what was wrong with Foligno’s hit. He wasn’t nearly as low as Marchand- if that was a clip, Ellis’ hip check was a clip on Simmonds.

the thing that keeps ellis' hip check on simmonds from being a clip

is the fact that simmonds attempts to jump either over or around ellis before contact which dramatically changes the location of impact by ellis.

If you watch

That’s exactly what Phaneuf did. He jumped it made the hit look lower. It was a crappy call.

One guy on the bench for the Hurricanes seems to start to cover his face like he doesn’t want to see the impact of that Orpik hit.
