NHL writer: Ryan Suter says he's out for Thursday vs. Columbus

A couple of interesting tweets just came from the account of Dan Rosen, a senior writer at NHL.com:

Some of the Predators visited the NHL offices today. Ryan Suter was one of them. He said he won't play tomorrow night vs. Columbus. Suter said he hadn't even told Barry Trotz yet, and he wouldn't elaborate on the nature of the injury other than to say, "It's not my head."

On 102.5 The Game's "1st Quarter" show this morning, Trotz said that Suter was questionable for tomorrow's game (that's what I remember hearing, if anyone else heard otherwise feel free to correct me), so the fact that he's not playing tomorrow isn't shocking. What is odd, however, is that Suter is giving this information to an NHL.com writer without even talking to his coach first.

So what's going on here? Does anyone else find it unusual that Suter would break something like this to a writer before talking to his head coach?

Poor Suter, according to Jim Diamond on twitter, he still has a broken heart from the Packers losing.

I was a bit startled

when I saw Suter says he’s out. I just expected that to be followed by …of Nashville. It is strange that he wouldn’t tell his coach, especially after Trotz saying that he would probably play against Columbus. I think I read that on the Tennessean.

I agree with Rosen.

“Because he’s a player who is comfortable enough with his relationship with his coach, and he understands his coach.”

I don’t think it’s anything more or less than that. This is a non-story.

No big deal

Because of the way Trotz worded most of his answers when asked about Shea’s return from the concussion. It was always “when Shea and the doctors tell me good to go” Even though Suter isn’t a head thing I would bet Suter and Weber are given the same amount of say with injuries.

It could just mean that Suter hadn't had a meeting with Trotz yet.

It’s not like they weren’t busy this morning.

Injury

Did we ever even see or find out how the injury ocurred?

I have a conspiricy theory! Ever notice how Jason Arnott would always get injured right before the playoffs? My friends and I would always joke and say “its time for Trotz to give someone a little time off before the big games!” Makes me wonder if he isn’t letting our guys off with some rest. I mean how would anyone prove otherwise? Its a little far out there, but hey it will make for good conversation. Anyone ever feel the same way?

Trainer/Doctor decision

Usually it’s a Trainer/Doctor decision that’s made with the player. And then the coach is informed. Maybe they didn’t have time to tell Trotzy yet.

It is kind of odd, though.

Suter and Trotz

I think he feels comfortable with Trotz, and didn’t feel the need to run to Trotz to tell him. I’m hoping Trotz has a pretty good idea of how Sutes is feeling since there around each other all the time. Let’s not look too far into this.

Conspiricy Theory?

Here’s mine.. Suter has a nagging injury, nothing serious, just would be better if we give him another days rest. We’re playing Columbus, so that fits.. Now they can announce his new contract when he plays agains Chicago on Saturday.. his birthday…

Well.. I can dream..
