Friday's notes: Is Barry Trotz going to be a Jack Adams finalist again?

While combing through your Friday morning hockey notes, I've got two radio segments to share with you, courtesy of the folks at 102.5 The Game. First up, Kevin Allen talks about the state of the trade market, and the impression he gets of the Preds' chances to retain Ryan Suter & Shea Weber:

Kevin Allen on 1025 2012-01-19 (mp3)

Next up, Sergei Kostitsyn and Roman Josi share post-game thoughts last night with Willy Daunic and Tom Callahan:

Roman Josi and Sergei Kostitsyn on 1025 2012-01-19 (mp3)

So listen in to those while you dive in to a healthy portion of late-morning hockey bites, including the question of whether Barry Trotz might earn his 3rd straight trip to Las Vegas as a finalist for the Jack Adams Award...

Radio interview

At which point does Suter owe the Preds an answer? I would say pretty damn soon based on listening to this Kevin Allen segment. Here we are only 6 points from the top spot in all of the NHL and all we hear are negative defeatist we can’t sign these guys because we’re Nashville type interviews. First of all Poile and ownership screwed this thing up last summer.
Maybe it was money but perception to both Suter and Weber was were a bunch of penny pinchers. That said they have made a fair market offer to Suter and have signed Pekka.
Fans fill the building and only 6 points from the top of the heap. Maybe our own players don’t believe it! Poile should try and swing a deal for Rick Nash – he’s expensive but I’m sure Suter and Weber would sign. We have some young guys to give them in exchange, maybe a 4 for 1 type deal. He needs to make a big statement other wise were going to lose both and rebuild again and again and again.

Suter doesn't owe anything

even if he’s already made up his mind. Sure, it would be nice to let the Preds know of his intentions as a professional courtesy to the organization, but if he doesn’t want to uproot for 2-3 months to a place maybe not of his choosing, he may keep his cards close to the vest to stay here, where he supposedly enjoys living, and is competing for a playoff spot.

Poile’s comments (rather add, than subtract) indicates he would prefer to keep em and try to go far in the playoffs now, and hope that convinces Suter (and Weber) to stay long-term.
Risky business, but if it leads to a good run, and money is fair value, and they like it here,
it may lead to Best Case Scenario.

Worst case scenario, if they leave for nothing, it sets the franchise back, but they will live. Dallas had life after Richards, Ottawa had life after Chara, etc, and Kovalchuk and Hossa’s trades from Atlanta yielded little.

He needs to make a big statement other wise were going to lose both and rebuild again and again and again. Not the man’s style. It seems like the majority of fans are comfortable with long-term stability, even if it means perpetually semi-rebuilding and aiming for a lower tier playoff position instead of a conference title/home ice/Cup favorite status.

If the majority of fans are happy, and ownership is happy, Groundhog Day rebuilding may be the best course of action.

Coach of the Year: Trotz is coaching Nashville to right where they belong and usually end up; Hitchcock is coaching St. Louis to where they have never been, and from a horrible start, too.
Ottawa’s coach deserves consid, but everyone is predicting Ottawa will fall back to earth, while StL looks to be for real. Can’t win a shootout to save their lives against Rinne, but other than that, they are topnotch.

I still think St. Louis will fall back to earth. They are getting by with a lot of 1-0 games, if the goaltending has a blip or comes back to normal they are in trouble.

Well said and agreed 100%!

While getting a mid-tier forward is helpful on a small level, it will do nothing to show the big two Dmen that we’re serious about being a Cup contender, this season or in the future. Half measures are not what’s needed at this time.

Trotz and the Jack Adams

While we all know how much he gets out of our lineup, I’m not sure he’ll have a shot at it this year. In my opinion, if the Sens can keep it up, then their coach deserves it. From a basement team to a contender (even after shipping off a solid contributor and fan favorite in Fisher) in one year, that’s pretty darn impressive.

I think that Hitchcock has made St. Louis better, but I believe we all knew they were a solid team whose metrics showed they were going to be better than their .500 record they had with their ex-coach. Also, Florida spent millions and they play in a division that is extremely weak right now.

Fisher's return

It would have been nice, if Fisher had a few more goals, and Suter and Weber weren’t easy locks as picks, to make the All-Star game, the most popular ex-Sens (with Chara, and Hossa) would get a nice crowd response. Those guys always looked good on Ottawa ice…..

In any case, Fisher is going to get a heck of a response in a couple of weeks. Hopefully Ottawa and Nashville remain two of the hottest teams in hockey…..here’s hoping for a 3 point game!

Trotz is undoubtedly an excellent coach, but I’m getting tired of hearing how every year he does so much with so little. When your team has two of the best defensemen in the league and arguably the best goalie, plus a bevy of quality second and third line forwards, you should be in the hunt for the playoffs, even without elite talent up front.

by Lil cutie on Jan 20, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

i agree completely

the only reason they make a big deal about it is because we are consistently near the cap floor while many other teams have to spend much more money to be in the hunt for the playoffs

trade rumblings

so in the article listed for CBJ was Vermette, Huselious, and Prospal. Didnt see Nash’s name in there (although I would love too). I remember Poile tried to get Vermette from Ottawa back when he was trading Scotty Walker. The article also noted that Poile said he wanted a veteran foward (i.e. Prospal). Personally, I dont like the idea of adding a CBJ that isnt Nash.

I'd be happy with Prospal

He’s like a Swiss Army Knife, you could play him anywhere up front and he’ll contribute.

I like Vinny. Erat and Prospal could wing the Fore-Czech’ing line. And I imagine that wouldn’t be a devastating trade (eg involving #20).

I can’t understand why Chicago is in the market for a top 6 forward. They seem to be pretty adept at scoring.

What about Wolski?

It doesn’t seem as if he’s found a home in NY. I haven’t seen any trade rumors about him, but he seems to fit the bill for what we’ve acquired lately – a talented castoff with attitude and work ethic problems. Plus he’s in a contract year so he needs a strong second half

Nice story

In the same issue, there is another player poll question;
hardest hitter.
Chara, then Tootoo, then autres.

First time I think I saw Toots on one of those peer lists for something positive.

Good for him; fans and D who go back to play the puck after a dump in have known for years that he packs a WHOMP into finishing his checks. Remember one of my first lower bowl games, you can hear some Calgary players from the bench to, in so many words, keep your head up.
