At the KHL's All-Star weekend, Alexander Ryazantsev recorded a 114.1 mph blast. What does this mean for Shea Weber's battle with Zdeno Chara coming up in Ottawa?

apples and oranges

Nothing really, considering the placement of the shot is at two different spots. KHL is at the hash mark, while the NHL is farther back, thus providing slower results.

do they get to skate up with speed like that in the NHL?

60% of the time it works every time

Yeah, I wonder a little bit about the physics of that.

The Russian guy started at center ice and took 8-9 full strides to the puck, which was at the hashmarks.
Weber/Chara started just outside the blueline, and both took 5-6 strides to the puck, which was just above the hashmarks.

Isn’t there a physics student/teacher/connoisseur on here??

The strides make a big difference, and the position of the puck, like Codey mentioned. Since the NHL places it further out, there’s a little more time for wind resistance to slow the puck down as it approaches the net. I’d guess the extra run-up distance makes the bigger impact.

And for the record, I got about halfway to a Physics degree in college before switching majors.

Sure, that totally counts as a physics-involved person! And that’s what I was thinking… I wonder what the numbers and stats would be for Weber and Chara, if they were allowed to have that much speed, as well as for a larger sample size… (here comes the interest in stats from psychology).

the machine output would just read “holy sh*t!!”

I agree with you as much as my 3 semesters of physics allow me to. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Russians….. selectively calibrated their measurement machines to give them a little help

3 semesters of physics and you still think that approx. 3-4 strides and a 20 cm difference in distance makes the puck go that much slower? WOW.

And yes, we always calibrate our machines imported from Canada to make you feel butthurt.

I'm not a physics major, and I'm totally guessing here, but...

The calibration thing aside (I’m sure they’re calibrated just fine), 3-4 strides is a LOT of ice. I’m 5’4" (162 cm), and my full stride is probably around 3 ft. (91 cm). 3-4 strides would be an extra 9-12 ft. (2.7-3.6m). Ryazantsev’s 5’7" (170 cm), so that’s not too much taller than I am; the extra ft./m is probably about the same (maybe a little longer). 12 feet (3.6 m) is a lot of room to build up speed. Anyway, I’m not a physics major, but doesn’t the speed of the first object affect the speed of the second object, when the first object acts upon the second? That extra 9-12 ft. (2.7-3.6 m) would definitely make a difference in the speed of the player, and wouldn’t it therefore affect the speed of the puck?

Did you create a SBN profile just to post that one comment?

Still wondering when SK74's shooting % will cease to be "A fluke".

Sorry guys, I was just in a bad mood and messing with you. Hope you understand. I know that there is difference between the challenges. And I’m not saying that now Ryazantsev has beaten the world record. Actually, for me it doesn’t matter at all, I just enjoyed the show and I’m going to enjoy the NHL All Star Game as well. Sorry again, guys:(

:) It’s all good.

I say we send Hornqvist to investigate. He has been hit by enough of Shea’s shots to be a good judge.

In addition to the slap shot competition, he could also judge the cheap shot competition.

by Stormyt on Jan 22, 2012 1:59 AM EST up reply actions

And with it being the KHL, I wouldn’t be surprised if that actually existed.
