Carter apparently available, chances Poile is making a call?..

So Jeff Carter is available apparently, just a few short months after being by Columbus. David Poile monitoring this possibly? I hope so. He can play Center, he can play Wing & mostly importantly score. Would this be the Top 6 forward that convinces Weber & Suter to stay? Pondering this leaves many questions. 10 years left @ 5.75 million? If we take that salary on will we have enough to feild a competitive team if Sutes & Webs re-up? Would Columbus deal in the divison? What would it take to get him from them? My opinions.. I think we could take on 5.75 million for 10 years, thats just a bit more than we are paying Legwand, Erat, & Fisher I do believe. Maybe not actual salary but close cap hit wise. I think Poile could figure out how to feild a competitive team paying Suter 7 million, Weber 8 million, Rinne 7 million, & taking on Carter's almost 6 million. It would just take us letting Legwand or Erat walk at the end of their contracts. I also think that Columbus would deal him to whatever team that would take him, so I would say yes that they would deal within their own divison. Finally, the fun part. If I were Poile I would be on the phone floating an offer of Blum, Lindback, & a 1st to Howson & see where it goes from there.

Carter is on the IR. He doesn’t seem like the quality guy that Poile seems to go for in situations like this. Also, there is a question of chemistry with the team and loyalty with that guy after the whole off season debacle, methinks.
He does have some skill.
I wouldn’t do it, though.

I saw some chatter on Twitter that hey, if SK74 had a bad reputation but worked out, it could be the same with Carter.

The problem is, Carter has about 100x as much money tied up in his contract than Kostitsyn did on his. Much bigger risk.

Yes, he does seem like an out of the ordinary player for Poile to pursue. But he is a very solid 2-way forward that I do believe that would fit perfectly in Trotz’s system. So I believe the chemistry factor may not be that big of a deal but after the way he acted during the offseason I see your point of view. But 2 important things here are did he act like that due to his love for Philly & undesirable situation he was put in by being sent to Columbus, a frachise known for instability & losing or was it marketablilty? If it was because he wanted a better situation I could honestly see him being happy to be shipped here if it were to happen. Another thing is he does have a great 40 goal season & a few solid 30 goal campaigns under his belt. I really think he could flourish in this system & be a superstar if he bought into it & played with alot of heart & lost the bit of an ego that he supposedly has, maybe be rightfully labled though.

Thank You, Dirk

Yes it is a big risk, not sure its one that he would take but I feel it is definately one that he should strongly consider & at least explore.

The salary is reasonable for a scorer like Carter.

But having some familiarity with the Flyers/Carter situation last season, I do question his commitment to winning. Highly skilled player though when he wants to be. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Kings get in on trying to land Carter.

The money is not scary, it is the ridiculous ten years left on his contract. I say stay away, far away.

How do you know his commitment to winning? Was playing on a broken foot in the playoffs not enough to answer that question?

So why did the Flyers trade him then? It wasn’t because he lacked high end skill, was it? And why is it that it appears the Jackets may want to move him? Teams generally don’t move players with a high skill level if they also have a good work ethic and are a good team player.

TSN had an article about Morrow possibly being traded.

That has to garner some interest as well! At least Poile’s got some choices.

If Morrow is available

then he is at the top of my wish list. Another older veteran to stay on top of the kids & push the kids to keep thier pace up.

Put me down for Morrow as well. But as long as the Stars stay in playoff contention, I doubt they move him.

With Carter

Cap hit is only 5.27 mil, but his actually salary is significantly higher in the short run.
6 mil this year
6.25 the next
6.5 in 13-14
6.75 in 14-15
7 mil in 15-16 and 16-17
before finally starting to drop again to 6.5 mil in 17-18 then 5, 3, 2, & 2

That right there would steer me away. Too long of a contract and too high at times.

Morrow in a heart beat.

With Carter, let me ask you. Do you want Wilson, Smith, Blum, Ellis, and Josi at Printer’s Alley and the other college bar areas doing body shots off of co-eds?

No. No I don’t. Didn’t Willy already get in trouble for alerting everyone in Nashville to the fact that “cow girl’s butts, drives [him] nuts”?

I think of Carter as a guy

that has already topped out. I don’t see him being a perennial 30 goal scorer. I thought it was a terrible pickup for the BJ’s long term and I think it would be an even worse mistake for us. I would definitely prefer a rental.

by Marcus Newman on Jan 27, 2012 8:23 AM EST reply actions

NO

and money and skill has nothing to do with it. Guy seams to be chemistry plague. There is a reason Philly sold him for cracker jacks and why, if true, the BJ’s are so quick to get rid of him. This preds team play really well together, he would destroy that cohesiveness.

Cracker Jacks?

I agree about Carter’s attitude being an issue, but the Flyers did pretty well in that trade when you consider they took Couturier with the pick they got and got Voracek as well.

Carter would

be a good addition to the team as long as he can remember that he’s part of a team. Hemsky or Staal would be better, but their current teams would like to dip into our prospect pool and get some early draft picks from us. The only thing about Carter that worries me is would he be another Lombardi, 3 games and BAM! IR for the rest of the season.

Carter’s games played in his NHL career:

81, 62, 82, 82, 74, 80

Don’t let one year cloud the fact that he has been extremely durable for the past 4 years.

That is very true. And he was extremely impressive in Philly a couple years ago, for a few years.
