Shea Weber comes off Injured Reserve, will play vs. Dallas

Welcome news comes this morning from Josh Cooper, confirming that Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber has indeed been taken off Injured Reserve and is ready to play tonight against the Dallas Stars, the team against which he suffered a concussion back on December 23rd. Preds PA announcer Paul McCann noticed first in tonight's media Game Notes that the captain was no longer listed on IR, but this update from the team seals the deal:

Per the Predators, Shea Weber has been cleared to play #nhl - @JoshuaCooper

Dallas is also getting their top defenseman back in Stephane Robidas, setting up what should be a pretty good match between two teams fighting for playoff position in the Western Conference.

Tom Callahan also tweets that Colin Wilson is not ready to go tonight.

Who gets scratched/sent down?

Blum? Hillen? Ellis?

Nobody has to get sent down, this brings the Active Roster to 23, which is the limit. Doesn’t rule out a move, though. As I wrote a few days ago, there are some long-term reasons why the Preds should send Ryan Ellis back down.

I think they should send the rocket man back down at least for a little while. However, tonight, do the Preds go with 7 D in case Weber isn’t ready to play a full game?

I would guess Ellis gets sent down....

For a lot of the reasons Dirk wrote about, but also because although he and Hillen have looked good paired together, Ellis really doesn’t offer much more than taking Weber’s spot on the PP. In Weber’s absence the PP hasn’t scored a goal, and Ellis hasn’t recorded an NHL point.

You've now had a chance to see

how much good three seasons in Milwaukee has done for Josi. I have zero issues with keeping him in the minors for as long as we need.

Any bets whether McGrattan plays tonight?

If not, why even carry him on the roster. His job is to play in situations like this.

That was a little tongue-in-cheek. I would be surprised to see him scratched tonight. I’d say he’s ready to mix it up with our ol’ pal Fistric.

by CoinFlip on Jan 5, 2012 12:15 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

actually his job should be to PREVENT situations like this. to me there are 2 classes of “enforcers” in the NHL. ones that protect their skill players, and ones that stage fights on twitter and play to the crowd.

by robjustice on Jan 5, 2012 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Curious

which ‘enforcers’ protect their skill players from dirty hits?

I take it you are saying Grats is only a show fighter?

I think Mcgrattan can make people answer the bell. After the Buffalo-Ottawa line brawl (Peters fought Emery), Mcgrattan and Neil made guys like Peters, Kaleta, and Mair own up the next game. He also tried to get at Downie when Downie ‘superman’ took off Dean Mccammond’s face off.

If you don’t think Mcgrattan is an effective policeman, its not so much him, its the landscape.

In the modern NHL, alot of the hard hits you would label as liberties aren’t done by enforcers, they are done by middleweight ‘agitators’ (Downie, Cooke, Carcillo, Dorsett, Ruutu, Burrows, Lapierre, Marchand, Kaleta, and yeah, Toots) who, if they have to answer the bell, usually do so with a guy in their weight class.

I don’t think there is a single heavyweight enforcer that can protect their teammates from borderline plays, because the culture nowandays doesn’t allow for Grats to hunt down a guy like Kaleta, the middleweight guys who typically run, charge, and take liberties. So I guess agree with you. But its not because Grats isn’t willing to ‘serve and protect’.

That right there is what drives me nuts about the modern “code” that so many people talk about. It’s idiotic that so many enforcers subscribe to this notion, but they do. Why else have a lumbering hulk if he’s not going to mess with whoever dares to cause trouble, whether they’re 6’5" or 5’9"?

The Bruins are often cited as having a “mess with one of us, you mess with all of us” mindset, but I haven’t watched them enough to see it in action.

by Dirk Hoag on Jan 5, 2012 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

And that’s the problem- why I’ve come to believe that the enforcers are useless nowadays and the Preds should just find a second “agitator” that’s similar to Tootoo. I used to love the fights, and for whatever reason I could care less whether I see one in a game or not.

In the 2012 NHL, I don’t particularly see the need for enforcers.

I agree

with you and Dirk; a traditional goon isn’t really a deterrent, and not useful on a game by game basis.

However, the reason why the Bruins mentioned above are different is that they don’t have any lugs who are out there 4 minutes a game just to have a “show” fight.

Thornton (the “heavyweight”, who is only 6’2, ~215 pounds) can play, and didn’t sit in the playoffs (played 18 games) where most guys like Grats, Parros, would be scratches…..
Campbell, McQuaid, Ference, Boychuk, Horton are all useful hockey players who can fight…..even two of their biggest stars, Chara and Lucic. Are all hockey players first, who mostly take regular shifts, who can fight. Makes some one think twice abour running Seguin et al.

But even they have a little weasel in Marchand……

Oh yeah, if you mess with one Bruin then everyone and the goaltender is going to have his sights on you. Its one of the reasons that are such a difficult team to play against. The other reasons are the depth, skill, and goaltending… so there’s that. I always dread when the Flyers are scheduled to go up against Boston.

Is it just me or is anybody else worried that Weber is coming back sooner just to put the Fist in Fistric? Hopefully Weber is truely 100%, but I have a hard time believing that it is a coincidence that he is coming back tonight.

I say he puts the Fist in Fistric (really liked that by the way) and then probly takes a light load tonight, just to ease him back in.

From what folks were saying about his practice yesterday, he seemed to be actually recovered, not just sort of recovered. Of course I didn’t get to see him personally, and that may just be wishful thinking, but I didn’t hear anyone say he seemed off in any way.

over at the dallas blog they’re hoping that fistric got the preds so worked up that we go to the penalty box half the game. not gonna happen. i’m predicting a couple of clean hard hits from weber and smithson, and maybe a fight from big ern. we gotta stay disciplined!

by predmama on Jan 5, 2012 2:28 PM EST reply actions

I don’t care for any hockey “code”…what I care about tonight ( other than 2 points) is Fistric understanding, because of his late hit, there will be a repercussion tonight….. I want him to be thinking, right now, “I better be prepared”.And it should be Mcgratten. Not Toots, not someone his own size…..It needs to be a guy who loves dishing out punishment with his fists and is willing to take a punch to give two.

If this doesn’t take place tonight, we will see another of our players go down with an injury from a questionable hit. If teams have no fear of taking liberties with our players, it will happen again.

It’s why we have Mcgratten and this is the type of team and game where Big Ern earns his paycheck. Let Toots take care of Ott or one of thier other pieces of useless debris.

My hockey team is better than your hockey team

This made my day!

going to be at my first preds game saturday against carolina and was afraid Weber might not make it back by then..Really good news, just hope he ain’t coming back too soon. Concussion’s are really weird injuries..the effects can be felt for hours, days, or even months..and generally if you’ve ever had 1 you are more susceptible to having them in the future..Not hockey related but Andruw Steele of the Alabama basketball team had 1 last year before the NIT tourney, and over the summer he continued to have the lingering effects for months and basically put out a statement a long with coach Anthony Grant that he wouldn’t be playing basketball again after doctors said it was in his best interest to end his career, he remained with the team though and after a follow up in November and, I assume what was a 2nd opinion he was cleared to play and played several minutes for the Tide the other night versus Georgia Tech and looked very good. When concussions are mis-managed by teams and doctors and more often by the players themselves the outcomes are never good.. The NY Met’s mis-managed Ryan Church’s a while back and tried to push him back too soon, when he was later traded to the Brave’s he made the statement that he still had the lingering effects from it, dizziness, sensitivity to light and nausea. I couldn’t imagine skating with those effects so I’m sure Weber is probably 100%.

by DropTheGloves on Jan 5, 2012 2:53 PM EST reply actions

The thing about a concussion is that it effects everyone differently and there is now set way to make it better other then time and taking it easy. Ive had them playing basketball and baseball and backyard football they all suck but everytime you get one it is different as far as recovery. If both the medical staff and Weber have said he is good to go then he is good to go. He will not know 100% until that first hit but after that he will either be fine and can let the hammer down or he will get dizzy again and be back on the trainers table. It is hard to compare his with someone else who has had one (lets say crosby) because not only are the hits that caused them different Crosby took the full force of a shoulder to the side of his head and it knocked him out cold, Weber’s was an elbow that either slid up and caught him or was intended for his shoulder and missed. Weber could be one of the lucky guys who can recover from a concussion quickly while Crosby could be one that takes a while longer to recover. The nature of concussions in sports is one that we are still exploring and trying to fully understand.

by Shadow23 on Jan 5, 2012 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly, I was trying to relay that message but didn't want to take up any more room lol..

I had 2 myself in highschool playing football..the first one I was ready to go again 3 days later and back in full pads at practice that following monday..the last one I sat out a week..My opinion is I think it is more player associated body wise as to how a concussion effects them, not trying to say its their fault or their being wusses, just how their body takes the trauma..I’ve seen some people take helmet to helmet contact more brutal than my own in football games before and bounce right back up and be ready the next play.

Halischuk...

The greatest afterthought of the Arnott trade…2nd on the Predators in goals with 9…

It is up to Trotz to roll four lines cause we have a scorer on each line…wear the other team out and come out victorious…
so it is written..so shall it be done (or had better be done ;)

by HardCorePredFan316 on Jan 5, 2012 3:31 PM EST reply actions

re: Halischuk

It sounds ridiculous to many, but this Preds’ team is better suited to the playoffs once they get there than most teams in the NHL. Stanley Cups are usually won by all 18 skaters and the goalie. You’re better off having 10 forwards with 15-20 goals than one guy with 50 (right, Anaheim Ducks?).

Say you were coaching a team with Nashville’s defense corps against the Predators’ forwards. Which line do you send out Shea and Ryan to shut down? Who on this team gets the other team’s shadow line and top D-pairing out there with them?

by Jim5489 on Jan 5, 2012 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Stanley Cups are won by teams with forwards like the Bruins, Hawks, Wings and Pens have. At last look, we come up short in that comparison.
