Friday's notes: Sweden Wins World Junior Championship
Predators game last night? What Predators game last night? That's the attitude I'm taking heading into tomorrow night's date with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Instead of fretting over last night's mess, let's celebrate the 2012 World Junior Championship gold medalists, Team Sweden, who beat the defending champs from Russia to win it all in Calgary...

The annual Predator dry spell
Fisher, Legwand, Hornqvist, can be streaky, and Smith has had some posts.
At some point, they will start getting some puckluck. The perfect cure? Carolina, at home.
And Tootoo has had a career year, no doubt. Pains me to say. He has earned himself a multiyear commitment, at a healthy raise. Still think he is a punk, but he has graduated from the Kaleta class to the crew of Marchand, Ott, Burrows, Bolland and I guess Cooke brand of agitator that can put up offense, drawing penalties…..those other guys are good on the PK. I wonder if Tootoo would be too; I can see him harassing the other team’s point, he has decent speed.

if i were Poile
i would give 22 a 3 year commitment, trade a few of these offensively challenged offensive players, sit down with weber and suter, together, in the office and ask them point blank what they want me to do with them and move forward without blinking.
those two are holding us back as much as they propel us forward with their lack of committment to the preds org……
I honestly thought the Senators would be the worst team in the NHL this season, but when you look at all the young talent they have in their pipeline like Zibenajad (hope I spelled that right) and the kids currently on their roster, they look like they’re headed in the right direction.
Amazed how the Swedes dominated that game, Russia’s goalie almost stole it from them though.

…and that Russian goalie will be wearing the winged-wheel on his jersey sooner rather than later. Not looking forward to that.
I don't think
he has been drafted. The Red Wings had the Czech goalie, who became a star of the tournament with his enthusiastic displays (fist-pumping after stopping the US on a penalty shot, etc.).

Petr Mrazek. The two Russians were outstanding as was Aittokallio (Colorado: where goaltending careers go to die). the American goalies not so much. Visentin and Wedgewood will get lots of attention, but they weren’t the best.

Have you had the chance
to check out some of youtube videos of his ‘exuberance’? The US game highlights are laden with them, as well as his playing along with the Jersey Shore inhouse video entertainment (puck daddy had a link a while back).

Yeah, I didn’t think it was as big a deal as a lot of people. He’s 19. He’s playing for his country. His team pulled off an upset. Sami Aittokallio got flak for getting emotional, too, but meanwhile Brett Connolly was getting flak for not being emotional enough. I say just leave them alone and stop harping on everything they do. Let them grow up a little bit, anyway.

Most of Ottawa is pleased
Zibanejad’s goal was a beauty! Stamp-worthy?
With the way the NHL team is playing, and the way that key pro and minor prospects are developing ahead of expectations, the Sens fans have had a very good start to the year. Heck, they had a great day yesterday, with Zibby’s heroics, the 4-1 win, and the All-Star voting results (all host cities get token selections by the NHL; the fans just did it a few weeks early….better than that, Spezza, Michalek, Karlsson, and Alfredsson are all playing well and contributing to wins).
I really think the biggest thing is the Coach. You can’t go wrong getting a guy from the Red Wing system, right?

I do have to say I’ve liked Bryan Murray as a GM for a long time. He catches a ton of heat for never winning the big one, but he usually gets teams moving in the right direction.

sounds like a certain GM I know…

Poile and Murray
have a history together, and there are some similarities between their two careers.
Its too bad that neither has won a Cup.
Murray did however help put some key pieces in Anaheim before he left that helped them win in 2007. Unfortunately, it was against the team Murray was coaching.

Murray also assembled the core of what Scotty Bowman inherited in Detroit in the mid-90’s.

True
I guess the difference there is that the first round playoff success (when he was coach and/or GM) paled to when Bowman joined up, so its easy to gloss over Murray’s efforts prior (like I did).
One thing about Murray: didn’t much care for his selection coaches. He hired Babcock (first NHL head coaching job in Anaheim, but struggled to find a fit in Ottawa until this year.
Poile hasn’t had to fuss as much by comparison, especially since he and Trotz became the MegaPowers.
