Yes, the NHL Trade Deadline is approaching. Yes, the Predators have two premier defensemen they need to sign to contract extensions. Yes, they need to worry about keeping in the thick of the Western Conference playoff hunt.
This morning, however, our hockey notes start off with a story of far greater importance...

Poile Interview
For those who haven’t heard it, Poile was interviewed on 104.5 The Zone last week and didn’t sound optimistic about signing Suter. At least that’s how I interpreted it.
The link is in the top right corner at the moment.
Wow
Mark Howard: “What’s the holdup to getting Ryan Suter signed?”
David Poile: “Ryan Suter’s willingness to sign, that’s the only thing that’s holding it up.”
Sorry folks, but he needs to go up on the auction block. If he wants to hit July 1 and test free agency, the Preds have little to no chance of keeping him, and letting him go away for nothing would be a disaster.
This is stunning audio, Poile actually admits to the team taking a step backward after the playoff run, something which I don’t believe he’s said before. You’re right, I sense a shift in tone here.

I think you’re right. The Preds can’t let him go for nothing. Not trading Shea is an option because you’ll get something if he’s given an offer sheet. Hopefully Poile will use some magic if he has to trade Suter and get something more than just draft picks or prospects.
On a side note, you’ve never had a peanut butter Goo Goo before Saturday?

What if Shea elects arbitration?
I have heard a number of people suggest holding on to Weber and seeing who throws in an offer sheet. However, there is another possibility and one that scares the hell out of me. What if there is no offer sheet and Weber elects to take Nashville to arbitration at the end of the year. Nashville can not elect arbitration, but Weber can. He is getting 7.5 million this year. Arbitration could grossly up that number depending on contracts that are signed between now and arbitration time. What if Weber was given 9.0 million a year for one year. Nashville would have to pay it or lose him for nothing. And then they would lose their best bargaining chip as he would be an UFA the following year.

It just goes to show how much in the drivers seat both Weber and Suter are.

Preseason Prediction
One of the things that Poile said at the start of the year was that Nashville would be much better in the 2nd half of the season. I would be interested to know if he still believes that.
Furthermore, I would love to know who is considered the better long term player, Suter or Weber. It might seem like Weber is the better player, but also costs more. We have been successful when Weber is out of the lineup, but not when Suter was. Personally, if we knew we could only keep one, I’d trade Weber NOW and bring in offensive talent to help convince Suter that the team is committed to the future and winning.
Founder and part time blogger on Hack Whack and Snack. Season Ticket holder with the Nashville Predators.
Pretty depressing...
Maybe some season ticket holders can make some calls. I hope he can get a trade done that will convince Suter that the Predators are committed to winning. He seems to be saying, ownership says I have the green light, but I am not really sure there will be a deal to be made. He doesn’t want to lose his long term plan, but without Weber and Suter you are missing a lot of your long term plan. We will see what happens next. Let’s win a bunch and maybe they will change their tune. You probably don’t get top tier scoring for Suter, do you? Who picks up Suter for the playoffs and then gives a way anything near his value?
Beer... Now there's a temporary solution.-Homer Simpson
I don’t think it sounds as dire as folks here seem to be making sound. Poile does go on to say that Suter isn’t looking at greener pastures, but he does want to win. It is one of the same problems that Poile has with getting Weber locked up long-term. Suter wants to play for a winning team that will or will soon contend for the Cup. Frankly, it sounds like both parties sound like they are going about it in a very business like manner. Clearly things could go either way, but I think saying that Suter has to go now is premature.
That being said, Ryan Suter makes a hell of a trade piece if that time comes.
Agreed.
Not as doom-and-gloom as I expected based on some of these reactions. Obviously, anything other than “he’s signed” isn’t gonna make us feel good, but I think it sounds like the ownership is aware of the costs and on board (finally), and the communication has been clear — we have to keep playing well and pick up some legit offense (hopefully before Radulov comes back into the picture as an “option”), then Sutes and Weber will be on board.
by Broadwaybully on Jan 9, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions
Sucks
If all the above is true then Suter needs to go – assuming the deal is fair market value.
In the end DP still hasn’t addressed the offensive short comings of this team. So we become a farm team for the rest of the league I guess. If he leaves blame management.
We’ve got 31 year old forwards who nobody wants for the money they make – Erat, Legwand and Fisher. Yes they have other skills but other than our young d’man nobody wants our forwards – with the exception of Tootoo. He a UFA too – what about him? Why is it the Preds always wait? The reason Suter wants to leave is he has seen a consistent pattern here of not getting things done until its too late – Pekka being the exception.
Suter
He’s my favorite Pred currently, but this is a bad sign. They should 100% focus on his deal right now. And if Sutes isn’t willing to accept a deal, we should see what we can get. For one, getting a solid forward would help convince Weber the team is serious. Two, Weber being a RFA means that if some team does offer him the moon, the Preds have a chance to match it OR get some picks in return. So we either get Weber, or we get compensated for him leaving.
I wonder if Sutes would accept a short term, high $ deal. Give the team a chance to show him they’re serious, while having the ability to leave if it doesn’t come to fruition.
TN Sports fan in Hoosier Country....
See my above comment
Keep in mind, an offer sheet is not neccesarily on the table. Weber could elect arbitration and totally rape Nashville. What if he was awarded 9.0 million a year for a one year deal?
Founder and part time blogger on Hack Whack and Snack. Season Ticket holder with the Nashville Predators.
As I was saying back in July.........
I don’t doubt that Poile will find it difficult to make a serious trade before the deadline for a quality forward, as there are countless numbers of teams who want the same thing we want and only a few teams willing to part with it. Not bringing in that forward we need back in July is coming back to bite us. As the saying goes, he who hesitates is lost.
Whether we’ve taken a step back from last season one could argue, but we’ve definately not improved from last year and that’s disappointing. We’re not going to get back what Suter is worth in a trade, though it doesn’t hurt to call around I guess. It would be nice if we just go all in for the Cup this season knowing that we’ll likely have to go thru at least a mini-rebuild with Suter and Weber likely not staying here. Just don’t trade for Forsberg again! :D

Hindsight being 20/20, which of the summer free agents would you have signed? Ryder was one you lobbied for…and he has turned out pretty good for the Stars. Other than that, I think all the other free agents from this summer were grossly overpaid for their value. Poile obviously underestimated the market – in terms of salary – this summer. But I can’t blame him for staying on the sidelines.
I disagree with you, somewhat, about Suter. I think teams at the deadline will pay handsomely for Suter. But it will be in the form of prospects and draft picks from a contending team – not a top-6 forward. No contending team will want to give up a top-6 forward because it will hurt their Cup run. And no team out of contention will want to give up a top-6 forward for Suter, who likely wouldn’t re-sign with them.
It will come down to trade deadline day. If Suter isn’t re-signed, Poile will take the best offer.
Must I go thru this again?
Ryder and Fleischmann were the two I said we should go after in July and both have been very good for their respective teams. 20/20 hindsight has nothing to do with it, foresight does. If I can have enough foresight to see that certain players could be of help to us, certainly an NHL GM should have the same foresight.
Defense keeps you in games........offense wins them!
by Grizzledbear on Jan 9, 2012 1:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I’m not saying you are using 20/20 hindsight to form your opinion. You’ve been pretty outspoken about it…and I’ll give you credit for the Ryder and Fleischmann calls. Both would have been good players to add. I agreed with you over the summer about Ryder. Not on Fleischmann.
I don’t think Poile should have signed someone just to sign someone. With the exception of Ryder, I think teams overpaid. Plus, one thing to consider, we don’t know who Poile tried to sign, but failed. He may have made an offer to Ryder, Fleischmann or any number of players. Nashville may not be a player’s #1 destination. Being a UFA is a two-way street – both the player and the team have to agree.
What I was trying to say was…given what we know now, what should Poile have done?
Certainly we can’t know what players Poile may have made offers to, but I would confidently put money on that he thought he could wait out the process and get a better deal on some UFA’s, only to watch every player worth signing get taken in the first two days of the UFA signing period. This is how he got left with the Bergfors CYA signing. In my estimation, Poile mis-read the market and got left out in the cold.
As to your last question, if no UFA’s were willing to come here, then you have to look at the trade options. There certainly were some big names that got moved in the off-season, so that was an option. The truth is though that, whether it be over-paying a bit for a UFA or having to give up top picks and/or prospects in a trade like we did with Fisher, the price will almost always be more than you want to part with. It’s the nature of the beast and every team has to deal with that.
As for Suter, I agree that you could get some good picks/prospects for him, but not a player of equal value. IMO, if this is the one chance we have to compete for a Cup before Suter and Weber walk, we may as well go for it.

Suter and then Weber.....
Both have no faith in the Preds winning. PERIOD. This is why niether have signed. Poile could be offering $45M for 5 years each and they would be balking at it. Both are worth a load on the trade market and Poile has “shown them the money” and they are not taking.
Outside of those two, our team is mediocre at best, with few exceptions. But we could build and entirely different and better team out of the proceeds reaped from their pending trade.
If Poile doesnt trade them we will be the “woe is me” franchise that CBJ currently are. I want them both to stay due to their play and impact and once (twice) in a lifetime drafted homegrown perpetual allstar status. but we cannot sit idly hoping…..
Suter and Weber
No need to panic regarding Shea – he might just stay and I doubt another team will make him an offer as RFA. You would need an opening salary of 7.5 million per year plus a minimum of 2 first rounders and probably 2 second rounders as compensation. And the Preds can match any offer.

While I believe that Suter
Will be in another team’s sweater next season, Poile has never been one to lay all his cards on the table.
Maybe Poile left out that a willingness to sign “a long term discounted deal” or “willing to sign a short term deal because I won’t do another 6+ yr deal” or finally that Suter won’t sign able deal without a NMC.
None of us know. Fair speculation is that they want to see the conference finals and the Stanley cup as a legitimate option.
I will hold out cautious hope that Suter will be locked in until he is traded or july 1st comes without a contract.

Management
Cant wait for the spin from the Preds after Suter walks! Here is someone they drafted, developed and now is a corner stone franchise type player BUT they waited too long and have not improved the teams scoring. Optimistic Shea will stay but with Suter his family tree is all about winning and not playing for penny pitchers!
by virgil trucks on Jan 9, 2012 12:37 PM EST up reply actions
I have to say, it is going to be VERY interesting to hear how the Preds spin it if Suter or Weber or BOTH leave. They have said time and again the main goal was to keep the core intact. Suter and Weber want to win a Stanley Cup. If Weber and Suter have not resigned that means that either they have no faith in management to put together a SC team or they want out. If the latter is the case then the time has come to move them and get some great compensation.
Wasn't Poile runner-up as NHL GM of the year last season?
And Trotz was runner-up as NHL coach of the year? Perhaps these guys are doing something right, for a team with a heretofore very limited budget and operating in the 30th media market.
After 15ish years of doing excellent work, this is nothing to b__ch about and subsequently call for Poile’s head. He’s done a great job. This is no reason to want to fire him.
Plus, I think it’s fair to argue that after 8 straight sell-outs (among other things), we aren’t the smallest of markets anymore.
Hands go uuppp..... AND THEY STAY THERE!
-nashvillepredators-
Agree but...
The gate receipts will only bring in less than $40M. The Cap is $65M. The residual dollars need to come from somewhere. Concessions, Souvenirs and Parking don’t make up the difference. As the 30th media market in the USA, there are many limited opportunities vs. other markets. Unless the new ownership group is willing to take a haircut to try and win a Cup at a higher Cap number, this team has limited resources.
Given that, I agree Poile has gotten great results by developing players which allows the team to own them until they are roughly 27. After that it is tough to hang on to them. There are many Preds’ examples.
I disagree, seeing as how we have the highest beer per ounce cost in the league. Preds only get parking money from the garage at the back of the arena. This is why we get revenue sharing.

Solution: have an owner buy Central Parking and proceed to clean house.
"We want to keep beating them...to break their pride and break their season...is a huge thing for us." - David Legwand
Without very much knowledge on the subject, I have to wonder if part of the problem is that (for one example) you can pay $5 to park outside of the strip club two blocks up the street… while it seems sketchy, it’s actually pretty smart if you think about it – it’s cheap, they have bouncers right there, and they’re gonna keep an eye out on cars. Until Central Parking can rival the low-priced, bouncer-employing, relatively safe strip-club parking, I’m not planning on parking anywhere else. As far as I know, CParking is way too expensive for the relative proximity you pay for. Probably not THE most important factor, but I’d bet it plays its part.

That’s the problem, Central Parking is run by bungholes. They need to analyze what they are charging.

I was just responding to the “I believe it is time for Poile to go” part of your post. I’m pretty much completely ignorant on the cost and revenue stuff, so I’m just taking in what everyone says on here. You very well may be right.
My point, however, is that for the last however-many-years, we’ve done well with (1) an EXTREMELY limited budget, (2) little-to-no-name players (with a few exceptions: Kariya, Arnott, Foresberg, Fisher, Weber, Rinne, and Suter; other than these 7 guys, our roster has not exactly been star-studded, and it’s important to note that we didn’t really have all 7 at the same time (i.e., Weber and Suter were here with Kariya, but were not “stars” yet)), and (3) relatively small trades. That isn’t to say that we could benefit from a big trade (we absolutely could), but I just think it’s WAY to premature to call for Poile’s head. He may have screwed a few little pooches along the way, but what GM hasn’t done that?? Everyone has a few “oopsies” on their resume. I think the more important question to ask is if he has made a(any) decision(s) that has(have) REALLY screwed something up. IMO, I don’t think he has. He has a habit of not making huge trades, yes, and waiting until the last minute to do stuff, sure, but I think that’s just his M.O.. Some people won’t like it, but you can’t get everyone to like everything, and like I said, he hasn’t made any massive mistakes using said M.O..
To be quite honest, while I would LOVE to have a big-name player here again (say, a Kariya), I do have a lot of pride in the Predators’s ability to compete with their low-budget, small-name roster. I don’t think we’re quite at the next level yet, and that’s where a big-name trade could come in handy, but we’ve been okay thus far. Look at last year – we made it to round 2, and lost to a team that made it to the SCFinals. On a low-budget, relatively-unknown roster (outside of Weber, Suter, Rinne, and Fisher). Poile helped us get there. Don’t send him packing.

That is according to one of their bloggers. While he is nothing special, he is the prototypical Poile pick up. Would cost less than $1 million and is a RFA after the season.

Jeez, like a broken record in an echo chamber with a parrot in here, sometimes.
Players move around, few tend to stay with a team their whole career if they have a long career. If Suter and/or Weber want to move on, they will move on. We don’t know what they are being offered, do we?
Sutes and Weber have a chance to be gods here in Nashville, but neither of them probably want to live the rest of their lives here. Suter is going back to his farm in Wisconsin. Shea is probably going to end up living in Canada. So, being a god in Nashville isn’t that big a deal with either of them. They want to get paid and want a legit chance to win a Cup. Can’t blame them, but you can’t lay the blame solely at the feet of ownership, either. There WILL be spoils to be had by our side. Suter will NOT be going away without the Preds being compensated. That’s not what the majority thinks. Bigger picture is the Preds have consistently waited and waited only to get burned time and again. At least they’ve signed Pekka to avoid a complete disaster!
Poile had trouble signing our own RFA’s last off season remember? The way Weber was handled, etc. Players like Suter and Weber don’t come along very often and it sucks that one or both will leave due to various perceptions. The fans fill the building, a new minority owner is in place and Bridgestone extended naming rights to 2019 yet we still have the lowest league payroll.

The way Weber was handled? Weber handled himself.
Let’s get away from the Preds for a second. Does every Cup winning team have players like Weber and Suter? If so, then players like them come along often enough. If not, you don’t need players like them to win a Cup. If that is the case, trading them for offense might be the better option. We didn’t lose any RFA’s last summer that we wanted to keep, did we?
it sucks that one or both will leave due to various perceptions
Why else would they leave?
Why would we not want the lowest league payroll for how we are doing? We make a trade or a deal and our payroll goes up and we didn’t waste money the entire year. We haven’t been able to afford to spend like everyone else, but have had some success and have positioned ourselves to have more success, perhaps as early as this year. Our payroll vs. our numbers so far this year prove that the moves and contracts signed in the past have put the Preds in a position to make positive moves. (Firesale contracts to Legwand and Erat, notwithstanding) That position includes the money to sign Suter and Weber to reasonable contracts, or to trade two likely future hall of famers. You can’t be a ‘farm team’ to the league if you aren’t drafting successfully. The club has really only made one big mistake(or rather, one group of them), and that was forced upon us by the owner-who-shall-not-be-named.

The club has made just one mistake?
Want me to go down the list of bad drafting that we’ve done? All the talk about needing offense and being a place where a Weber or Suter would be more likely to stay with would be a non-subject.

Wow.
I didn’t realize the other teams were perfect at choosing draft picks. Or never overpaying for a free agent. Or not making a mistake. Poile has been well above average compared to the other GMs.

I reserve that if he doesn’t get anything for Ryan come end of February. Actually, there may not be much he can do. He’d have to trade a lot for a Top 3 forward if he wants to keep Suter and Weber.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been thinking too. I’m not sure how much flexibility he realistically has. All I know is that he has been extremely capable with the resources he has been given thus far, so I don’t feel that it’s fair to worry.
And just as a new and interesting perspective, I wonder if he’s almost not comfortable spending all this new money that we have; by that I mean he’s gotten so used to being an effective GM on a very small budget that if feels weird (or “uncomfortable”) being able to spend TONS of money (per se). Do you know what I mean? It’s kind of hard to explain. I guess it’d be like someone who never had a ton of money, and was able to survive that way, suddenly coming into a big inheritance or something. While some people would enjoy it, I think others wouldn’t be sure what to do with it.

I love this line of reasoning some try to pull off here. They make comments that the organization has made few mistakes and therefore shouldn’t be criticized, but when someone does point out the mistakes they’ve made, then it’s “no one’s perfect!”, as if anyone was making that argument in the first place. The fact is, our under-emphasis on drafting skilled forwards is why we’re continually in need of skilled forwards. Bringing up that others teams make mistakes too doesn’t erase that.

Not really. You basically spent the time saying Poile sucks as a GM, how he’s terrible at the draft and doesn’t sign the right free agents.

So basically, I have repeat the same material I’ve presented elsewhere numerous times on the various drafts that we made bad selections with in order for some of you to be satisfied with my reasoning?

And apparently the ones nominating Poile for GM of the year don’t know what they’re doing, either.

You jumped into this. We are trying to have a discussion. As you just pointed out, you just want to have an argument.
I asked virgiltrucks for some examples, he declined to offer some.

Gimme a break!
What you’re doing in this thread is trying to night stick anyone who criticizes the organization. That’s not having a “discussion”.
I’ve been very specific in what area’s I believe the organization has missed the mark on (and by the way, bringing up points where one thinks the team has messed up doesn’t equate to saying “Poile sucks”), so for you to say I haven’t brought up any examples is, to be kind, way off-base.

But after all is said and done
it is about ownership. The good news is we still have an NHL team in Nashville, and after the fire sale a lot of people stepped up to keep the team here. The bad news is the current ownership apparently does not have the resources to put a legitimate Cup contender on the ice. It’s not about money with Suter and Weber. They want a realistic shot at the Cup and they know it ain’t gonna happen here during their careers, the signing of Pekka Rinne to a long term extension notwithstanding. The club jettisoned all those players from last season, have hovered at or near the cap floor ever since, and have done absolutely nothing to improve the situation. It is now too late for Suter and Weber. Even if the club was so inclined, and there has been no indication of that up to this point, it won’t be able to improve the team to the level of a serious Cup contender quickly enough to suit Weber and Suter. So for me, it’s a mixed bag. I’m grateful to have an NHL team here, but it’s frustrating to know that the team will never be much better than it is now, not without new ownership with deeper pockets.

We get four more wins in the first half of the season and we are tied for the league lead in points! We definitely had four crappy games we could, and should have won.
IMO, we are perfectly positioned to make a good move and contend.

I guarantee it is about the money. Over the length of their new contracts, probably 7 years, they will have multiple opportunities to make the playoffs and contend for the Cup no matter who they sign with. Unless they sign with the CBJ’s.
Actually
If I had to guess it would be about the length of the contracts. I’d be willing to bet neither of them wants to sign a long term deal. I would bet they want to sign shorter term- 5 years or less. That way with their performance, they can have a bigger contract later.

I had season tix in Cincy in 1990 – split them 4-ways with friends. Went to Game 2 of the NL Championship series and Game 2 of the World Series – the extra inning winner against Eckersley. That game and the first Preds playoff game against the Wings were the loudest games I’ve ever attended.
Awesome, couldn’t afford tickets to the Series, but yeah, it was loud for the championship. I am envious of your attendance.

if we trade both away
We are in a far far worse position then where we are now. We have who for our top pair…klein cube? Yeah not who i would be comfortable with. To try and trade them would all but assure us a battle with cbj for worst team. Peks gas shown that he needs a solid d in front of him to be his magical best. Josi and blum and ellis are good but they are rookies and will make mistakes. We are screwed if we lose them at the deadline because there will not be much of value that we can get in a trade its been pointed out hrre before but instead of calling for a trade or poiles head think of where we would be without them. Some here seem to think the grass is greener just be careful what you wish for
